Traditional Hokkaido Style Deep-fried Chicken Has Crispy Outside and Tender Inside -Torimatsu in Kushiro-
November 24th, 2015
Torimatsu (鳥松) is a Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken (ザンギ) restraunt in Kushiro city. There is a building at the corner of Sakae-machi, amusement area of Kushiro, and it was founded in 1960. It is known as the originator of Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken that everyone know in Hokkaido. But I do not know whether correct or not because some restraunts are said to be the originator. Still it is a fact that many visitors visit the long-established Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken restraunt.
I visited here at opening hour around 17:00 on weekdays. However, I visited here again 15 minutes later because an owner said that opening time was delayed. The restraunt is small, it seems to be full if approximately 8 people sit at counter seats. Their family of 3 members seemed to manage the restraunt. I was told to seat one by one from the innermost counter seat by the owner's daughter and sat at the innermost counter seat. I read a menu hanging on a wall and ordered a dish of Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones (ザンギ), a dish of Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones (骨なしザンギ), a dish of deep-fried chicken wing (手羽先) and an alcohol-free beer. The price are JPY 580, JPY 690, JPY 690 and JPY 420.
There was a kitchen in front of customer's eyes and the customers could see that the owner fried many chickens. It was a rhythmic movement. A customer was just me, but a telephone ringed when I thought why he fried so much chickens. The call was an order (to-go) of the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken. They got a succession of phone calls, so that looked quite tough. His daughter served fresh Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bare hands on a plate. When I asked whether your hands were not hot, she replied that she got used to hot. Getting into the habit was amazing.
Approximately 10 minutes later, the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones was served. At first I eat it without dipping sauce. The Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones had crispy outside and tender inside. It was tasty! His daughter said that the customers ate it with dipping sauce, and it was tasty, too! when I ate it with dipping sauce.
While eating, the visitors took the seats next to me. The visitors were Mr. Yoshidai and his co-worker. They told me that the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones was tasty with dipping sauce mixed black pepper, actually, it was tasty with spicy hot when I ate it. It was nice. The Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones and the deep-fried chicken wing were served shortly afterward. The both had bones, and it took time to pull out bones, but the labor made me feel tasty.
Mr. Yoshidai and his co-worker seemed to visit here by all means on a business trip to Kushiro and looked forward to eating the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones when I talked to them. They told me that a dish of chicken and sauteed vegetables was tasty, too, and it was surely tasty when they gave me a share. I was happy that I was able to talk to them. Meanwhile the restraunt was filled to capacity around 18:00. It was really popular restraunt.
