[Torimatsu in Kushiro] Traditional Hokkaido Style Deep-fried Chicken with Crispy Outside and Tender Inside
Torimatsu (鳥松) is a famous Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken (ザンギ) restraunt founded in 1960 in Sakae-machi, Kushiro city, and is near Karaoke Utaya (カラオケ歌屋). The restraunt run by Mr. Satoru Takakura (高倉悟), the 2nd owner, is well-known as the originator of the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken called a local speciality of the Hokkaido. But I do not know whether correct or not because some restraunts declare the originator. But it is a fact that a lot of people visit the long-established Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken restraunt.
The restraunt is small, and only U-shaped table is provided. Visitors must seat one by one from the innermost counter seat. I guess that it is full if about 8 people sit at counter seats, so I suppose that family customers and large number of people can hardly enjoy meals. The restraunt has a good atmosphere such as a typical Japanese old bar. It is Shibui! 3 members manage the restraunt at the counter.
By the way, a direct bus does not run between Sapporo or New Chitose Airport and the Kushiro. But highway buses "Star Light Kushiro-go (スターライト釧路号)" and "Kuhsiro Limited Express New Star-go (釧路特急ニュースター号)" run between the Sapporo and the Kushiro, and Sunrise Asahikawa-Kushiro-go (サンライズ旭川・釧路号), an express bus, runs between the Kushiro and Asahikawa, and Sweets Liner-go (スイーツライナー号) runs between Obihiro and Tancho Kushiro Airport, and Senpoku-go (釧北号), an express bus, runs between the Kitami and the Kushiro, and Akan Airport Liner (阿寒エアポートライナー) runs between Lake Akan and the Tancho Kushiro Airport. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Kushiro Station and Kushiro Airport. An airplane flies between Kushiro Airport and Okadama Air Port, and an airplane flies between the Kushiro Airport and New Chitose Airport. As for transport facilities for the Kushiro-Shitsugen Wetland sightseeing, Kushiro-shitsugen train Norokko-go (くしろ湿原ノロッコ号) and Kushiro-shitsugen bus Isshu-go (釧路湿原一周号) run.
Kushiro (釧路) that about 170,000 people live is the 5th largest fisheries city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Eastern Hokkaido area. The Kushiro became incorporated with Akan town (阿寒) and Onbetsu (音別) in 2005, and has became the 3rd largest city by area in the Hokkaido. In Japan, it is the 7th latgest city by the area. The Kushiro is also well-known as a tourist city with rich nature, and has 2 very famous national parks, Kushiro-Shitsugen wetland (釧路湿原), the largest wetland in the Japan, and Lake Akan (阿寒湖) consisted by primeval forests and lava. In addition, the beautiful sunset can be seen, too, and the Kushiro is one of the three major places to see the beautiful setting sun in the world together with Manila in Philippines and Bali in Indonesia. Hokkaido Style Deep-fried Chickens
I visited here around 17:00, just opening hour, on a weekday. However, I visited here again 15 minutes later because an owner said "Opening time is delayed today". After entering the restraunt, I sat at the innermost counter seat. The first visitor was me on that day. I read menus hanging on a wall, and ordered a dish of Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones (ザンギ), a dish of Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones (骨なしザンギ), a dish of deep-fried chicken wing (手羽先) and an alcohol-free beer. The price were JPY 580, JPY 690, JPY 690 and JPY 420.
A kitchen was in front of customers' eyes, and the customers could see that the owner fried a lots of chickens. It was a rhythmic movement. A customer was just me, but a telephone ringed when I wondered why he fried so much chickens. The call was an order (to-go) of the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken. They got a succession of phone calls, so it looked quite tough. A waitress served fresh Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bare hands on a plate. When I asked whether your hands were not hot, she replied "I get used to hot". Getting into the habit was amazing.
After waiting for about 10 minutes, the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones was served. First I would eat it without dipping sauce. The Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones had crispy outside and tender inside. It was tasty! The waitress said "Customers always eat it with dipping sauce", so second I did, and it was tasty, too!
While eating, some visitors took the seats next to me. The visitors next to me were Mr. Yoshidai and his co-worker. They told me "The Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken without bones is tasty with dipping sauce mixed black pepper". Actually, it was tasty with spicy hot when I ate it. It was nice. The Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones and the deep-fried chicken wing were served shortly afterward. The both had bones, and it took time to pull out bones, but the labor made me feel tasty.
They said "We must visit here by all means on a business trip to Kushiro, and look forward to eating the Hokkaido style deep-fried chicken with bones" when I talked to them. They told me "A dish of chicken and sauteed vegetables is tasty, too", and it was surely tasty when they gave me a share. I was happy that I was able to talk to them. Meanwhile the restraunt was filled to capacity around 18:00. It was really popular restraunt.
