[Yunotai Onsen in Kaminoku] Day Trip Onsen and Natural Masterpiece Can Be Enjoyed at Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center
Yunotai Onsen (湯ノ岱温泉) is a hot spring place in Kaminokuni town located in the western part of Hakodate city. The distance is around 16 km far away from the center of the Kaminokuni, and Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center (上ノ国町国民温泉保養センター) is built along Amanogawa River. A few houses are built around here, but restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. A famous tourist attraction in the Kaminokuni is Mt. Iouzan (夷王山) with a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan, and there are Yoake-no-to Tower (夜明けの塔), a campsite and Tateyamakan (勝山館) on the mountain.
The Yunotai Onsen has a long history, and hot springs were discovered in the Edo period. This onsen is passed a rigorous screening in 1974, and has been appointed by Minister for the Environment, and is one of 15 nation insurance hot spring resorts in Hokkaido. A type of hot springs is natural carbonated moor spring, so it is an unusual spring in Hokkaido. As far as I know, hot spring places with the natural carbonated spring in Hokkaido are Gomi Onsen in Shimokawa, Kyowa Onsen in Aibetsu, Utanobori Onsen in Esashi, Shilala Onsen in Shakotan, Kogane Onsen in Niseko and Marumigaoka Onsen in Otofuke.
List of Day Trip Onsen
Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center. Amanogawa-no-Yu (天の川の湯), a nature open-air onsen, is on the river bank of the Amanogawa River (天野川), too.
Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center
Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center (上ノ国町国民温泉保養センター) is a hot spring facility for day trip onsen founded in 1975, and is famous for the bath floor and walls deposited by hot spring ingredients. The appearance and the interior decoration have an atomosphere of Showa period, and it is very Shibui. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 350.
There are 2 indoor baths, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 cascading bath at a public bathhouse. The sunny bathhouse with a lot of windows is large and old but cozy. Color of whole bathhouse turns into dark brown by the hot spring ingredients. 3 baths are set along the windows, and the cascading bath is set beside a wall. The bath floor deposited by hot spring ingredients like terraced rice-field-shape is cool, too. Through the windows, fresh green can be enjoyed in a summer, and fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn.
The large indoor bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 12 people can take a bath, and uses natural free flowing hot springs with adding heated water. Water temperature is around 42 C. The small indoor bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 8 people can take a bath, and uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs. Water temperature is around 38 C. Bathers can enjoy natural air bubbles. The whirlpool bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 2 people can take a bath, and uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs. Water temperature is around 35 C. The baths are warm wholly, and are suitable for taking a long bath.
The cascading bath seats 3 people, and a rocky wall is amazing. It truns into rocks like insect-egg-shaped stones. The hot spring ingredients have precipitated on the wall, and the shape have been born naturally. I feel that power of nature is very splendid. I think that this is worth seeing.
The hot springs are sodium and calcium chloride carbonated spring, and are opaque and light green and have salty taste and metallic taste. The sum total of (1) hot spring ingredients are 5.951 g/kg. The sum total of (2) hot spring ingredients are 4.978 g/kg. The hot springs were drinkable, but I did not find a drinking hot spring facility. Because shampoos and body soaps are not provided at the bathhouse, so bathers should bring those. A free hair dryer is installed at a dressing room. Because a restroom is not installed at the dressing room, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom along a corridor.

The Amanogawa-no-Yu is a nature open-air bath near Yunotai Bridge (湯ノ岱大橋) on the right bank of the Amanogawa River. 2 ponds are on the river bank. Clear fresh springs gush out at a small pond, and the bottom of the pond turns into brownish-red color, and it is the same as the Kaminokuni Onsen National Health Center. The springs flow from the small pond to a lower large pond, and beige color hot springs gather. But to hesitate to take a bath. Water temperature of the small pond is around 30 C. The springs are too lukewarm, so it is hard to take a bath except in a summer.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
