[Shirasu Kaikan in Suttsu] Simply Scalded Rice Bowl Using Fresh Whitebait Caught on Morning of That Day
April 30th, 2017
Suttsu Shirasu Kaikan (すっつ しらす会館) is a restraunt opend in 2012 in Suttsu town located in the southwestern part of Otaru city, and faces National Route 229. Marutoshi Yoshino Shoten corp. (有限会社マルトシ吉野商店) runs it, and Mr. Toshihiko Yoshino (吉野 寿彦) is a company president. They also run Yoshino Kakigoya (吉野かき小屋 * Oyster Hut) that is famous for all-you-can-eat oyster, and both restraunts are very popular. Opening period of the Shirasu Kaikan is only a spring season (almost from April to June) for fishing whitebait. Speaking of Whitebait Rice Bowl (しらす丼) in Japan, Shonan area in Kanagawa prefecture and Suruga Gulf in Shizuoka prefecture are famous. In Hokkaido, I wonder that the Whitebait Rice Bowl can be hardly eaten, so it is a very rare dish. The Shirasu Kaikan moved to a building of the Yoshino Kakigoya in 2017. An article before moving is as follows.
Speaking of the Suttsu, it is famous as the most caching place of the atka mackerel in Japan. In addition, it is also well-known for a fishing place to catch whitebait, and the whitebait caught on the morning of that day is a special feature, and it can be eaten on that day. The mark is a yellow flag. If the flag is shown, people can eat fresh whitebait caught on the morning of that day. By the way, whitebait (しらす) is a collective term for baby fishes such as Anchovy (カタクチイワシ), Japanese Pilchard (マイワシ), Japanese Sand Lance (イカナゴ), Eel (ウナギ), Sweetfish (アユ) and Herring (ニシン) in Japanese. Baby Japanese sand lances (小女子) are caught around the Suttsu.
The light blue appearance of a fishery guardhouse stands out. The restraunt is larger than I expected, and the interior decoration is stylish. All seats are table seats, so I guess that even family customers and a large number of customers enjoy meals.
Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl
I visited here around 13:00 on a weekday. No customers enjoyed their meals at the restraut. They served 3 types of the Whitebait Rice Bowl, Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl (釜揚げしらす丼 * JPY 1500), Raw Whitebait Rice Bowl (生しらす丼 * JPY1500) and Half & Half Rice Bowl (ハーフ＆ハーフしらす丼 * JPY 1700) on a menu. The Raw Whitebait Rice Bowl was popular to catch fresh whitebait from the sea. But I wanted to eat a little salty whitebait, so I ordered the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl. Water is available at a self-service counter.
About 7 minutes later, the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bow was served with a dish of Whitebait Boiled in Sweetened Soy Sauce (小女子の佃煮) and a bowl of miso soup. Whitebait was topped with a yellow raw egg, chopped green onions and chopped dried laver, and the beautiful color combination sharpened my appetite. Soy sauce was poured into a small dish, and it was mixed with grated ginger with chopsticks. The soy sauce with grated ginger was poured into the the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl, and the raw egg, the whitebait were mixed with rice. Then I eat a mouthful of the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl. The taste of the sea spread out in my mouth. It was tasty! I finished eating it without delay. Thanks for the tasty meal!
