Fresh Whitebait That Caught on Morning of That Day Simply Scalded Rice Bowl -Shirasu Kaikan in Suttsu-

Shirasu Kaikan (しらす会館) was a restraunt opend in 2015 in Suttsu facing the Sea of Japan. Yoshino Shoten (吉野商店) that is famous for Yoshino Kakigoya (吉野かき小屋 * Oyster Hut) along Japan National Route 229 runs it, and it is opend a business during spring season (almost from April to June) for fishing whitebait. Suttsu (寿都) is known for atka mackerel and the whitebait in Hokkaido. The whitebait caught on the morning of that day is a special feature, and it can be eaten on that day. The mark is a yellow flag. By the way, whitebait (しらす) is a collective term for baby fishes such as Anchovy (カタクチイワシ), Japanese Pilchard (マイワシ), Japanese Sand Lance (イカナゴ), Eel (ウナギ), Sweetfish (アユ) and Herring (ニシン) in Japanese. Baby Japanese sand lances (小女子) are caught around the Suttsu.

I visited here around 13:00 on weekdays. There is no customers at the restraut. There are all tables, so family customers seem to enjoy. Menu has 3 kinds, Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl (釜揚げしらす丼 * JPY 1500), Raw Whitebait Rice Bowl (生しらす丼 * JPY1500) and Half & Half Rice Bowl (ハーフ&ハーフしらす丼 * JPY 1700). The Raw Whitebait Rice Bowl is popular to catch the fresh whitebait from the sea. But I wanted to eat a little salty whitebait, so I ordered the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl.

About 7 minutes later, the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bow was served with a dish of Whitebait Boiled in Sweetened Soy Sauce (小女子の佃煮). Whitebait was topped with a yellow raw egg, chopped green onions and chopped dried laver, and the beautiful combination sharpened my appetite. Soy sauce was poured into a small dish, and it was mixed with grated ginger. The soy sauce was poured into the the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl, and the raw egg, the whitebait were mixed with rice. Then I eat a mouthful of the Whitebait Simply Scalded Rice Bowl. Taste of the sea spreaded at my mouth. It was tasty! I finished eating it soon. By the way, water is available at a self-service counter.
