August 8th, 2016
Mamiyado (間宮堂) is a popular ramen restraunt run by Marusan Miura Shoji corp. (有限会社マルサン 三浦商事) in Soyamisaki Park (宗谷岬公園), Wakkanai city, and is known for a catch phrase "The more people go north, the better ramen is tasty (北へ行くほどラーメンがうまくなる)". The building is located on a hill, so view from the ramen restraunt is good. Dishes using seafood such as a sea urchin rice bowl as well as the ramen are also served. By the way, they open a bussiness from mid April to mid November, and close a bussiness in a winter.
The interior decoration like a lodge with a warmth of woods is large, and walls are covered by cards for autographs closely. Counter seats, table seats and a small separate Japanese style room are provided, so I guess that even family customers may enjoy meals.

Wakkanai (稚内) that about 35,000 people live is the 21th largest fishery city in Hokkaido, and was named after Yamuwakkanai that means "A river with cold water" in Ainu language. It is one of regional hub cities of the North Hokkaido area, and is the northernmost port town in Japan. A catch of Octopus Dofleini (ミズダコ) is the largest in the Japan. In addition, a lot of people run a dairy farm, and the Wakkanai is one of tasty milk‐producing distlict in the Hokkaido. My grandmother was from Keihoku (恵北) in the Wakkanai, and I remember that the milk was very tasty when I visited parents' house of my grandmother in the old days. As for climate, the Wakkanai faces the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, so a wind blows hard. Average annual temperature is 7 degrees, and it is chilly in a summer, and it does not relatively snow hard in a winter. Wakkanai Peninsula (稚内半島) is in the west side of the city, and Soya Peninsula (宗谷半島) is in the east side of the city, and the downtown is in the west side of the city. Various things is the northernmost in the Japan, for example, Japane's Northernmost Railway Monument (日本最北端の線路の碑) is built beside the Wakkanai Station, too. Article is here
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Article is here
Scallop Salt Broth Ramen
I visited here around 10:30 on a weekday. A customer already enjoyed his ramen. I sat at a table seat, and ordered Scallop Salt Broth Ramen (塩ホタテラーメン), the most popular ramen. The price was JPY 800. As soon as I took a seat, 3 groups of customers came in, so no doubt this is popular.
About 10 minutes later, the ramen was served. A scallop, bamboo shoots, a kamaboko with a spiral whirlpool-like pattern, a Japanese dry baked wheat gluten and green onions were on noodles. Soup fully covered a ramen bowl. I ate a sip of the soup immediately. I guessed that the soup was made from scallop soup stock, and the taste was light, but it was very tasty. I could not help making a sound.
The whitish noodles curled made by Hokkaiya Making-noodles Factory (北海屋製麺所) in the Wakkanai went well with the soup. Firmness of the noodles were just right. Because a processed marine products factory runs it, the ramen using tasty scallops caught in the sea around the Wakknaai is one of highlights. The scallop flavor and a scenery were really good, so I was satisfied. Thanks for the tasty ramen!
