Wakkanai Onsen (稚内温泉) is a hot spring place in the west side of Wakkanai city, and is the origin that hot spring gushed out when they prospected for oil, and is the Japan's nothernmost onsen. Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu (稚内市健康増進センター 童夢), a hot spring facility for day trip onsen, and some accommodations are built. There are Wakkanai Youth Recreation Hall (稚内少年青年の家) and Wakkanai General Gymnasium around there. The distance is around 10 km away from the center of the Wakkanai, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬) is relatively near here, and there are Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium (ノシャップ寒流水族館) and Wakkanai Lighthouse (稚内灯台) and restraunts.
Wakkanai has many inimitable sceneries in Hokkaido, and there are sightseeing spots in various places of Wakkanai city. Cape Soya (宗谷岬), Soya hills (宗谷丘陵), Wakkanai Park (稚内公園), Onuma Pond (大沼) are particularly famous. In addition, local people recommend the sunset in Yuhigaoka Parking (夕日が丘パーキング). By the way, Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Wakkanai, Sushi Tatsu (寿司竜), Robata Yezo-no-Sato (炉端 蝦夷の里), Yezo-banya (えぞ番屋), Izakaya Zakoya (居酒屋 雑魚や) and Steak House Vin (ヴァン) are popular in particular. I ate foods at the Vin, Mamiyado, Takaraya and Hanaichimonme, and those were tasty. Lastly, a direct bus does not run between Sapporo or New Chitose Airport and the Wakkanai Onsen. But an express bus Hamnasu-go (はまなす号) runs between the Sapporo and the Wakkanai.
Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬) is a cape located in the northwestern part of Wakkanai city. The Noshappu means "A place that the cape is like jutting out a chin" in Ainu language. As its name suggests, the cape is at the tip of Wakkanai Peninsula. It is well-known for enjoying the beautiful setting sun across the Sea of Japan, and is a popular place to view Rshiri Island and Rebun Island. As for climate, the Wakkanai faces the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, so a wind blows hard. Average annual temperature is 7 degrees, and it is chilly in a summer, and it does not relatively snow hard in a winter. Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu
Domu is a hot spring facility for day trip onsen founded in 1997, and is designed by Hokkaido Nikken Skkei inc. in the motif of a port city, so the appearance looks a ship and a port from the top. It is one of good points that the building is built facing the front of Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. When I visited here, a lot of local people came. Restraunt "Yunagi" (レストラン夕凪) is at the building, too. In addition, they issue a certificate for bathing in the Japan's northernmost onsen for JPY 100.
There are 1 open-air bath, 1 indoor bath, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 sleeping bath, 1 cascading bath, 1 medicated bath, 1 cold bath and 2 saunas at a large public bathhouse on the 2nd floor. The sunny bathhouse with a lot of windows is feeling good. By the way, a photography is prohibited at the bathhouse. Bad luck!
The indoor bath, the whirlpool bath, the cascading bath and the medicated bath are set along the windows, and the elliptical-shaped indoor bath is the size that about 12 people can take a bath, and the round whirlpool bath is the size that about 8 people can take a bath, and the round medicated bath is the size that about 2 people can take a bath, and the cascading bath seats 1 person. The sleeping bath seats 2 people beside a rocky wall. Almost baths use the heated natural hot spring diluted 5 times with water.
The ship-shaped open-air bath is the size that about 5 people can take a bath. A sense of openess can be felt without a roof. A view can not be enjoyed while bathing because of a blindfold fence. But bathers can enjoy the Sea of Japan and Mt. Rishirifuji while cooling heated body. It is really nice scenery. The sunset over the Sea of Japan seem to be beautiful.
The hot springs are sodium chloride carbonated spring, and are a little opaque and light yellow and have salty taste and oil smell, and have smooth and slippery touch, and are not drinkable because of circulation type baths. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 6.020 g/kg. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom and free hair dryers are installed at a dressing room.
