[Wakkanai Onsen] Day Trip Onsen and Japanese's Northernmost Onsen Can Be Enjoyed at Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu

Wakkanai Onsen

Wakkanai Onsen (稚内温泉) is a hot spring place in the west side of Wakkanai city, and is the origin that hot spring gushed out when they prospected for oil, and is the Japan's nothernmost onsen. Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu (稚内市健康増進センター 童夢), a hot spring facility for day trip onsen, and some accommodations are built. There are Wakkanai Youth Recreation Hall (稚内少年青年の家) and Wakkanai General Gymnasium around there. The distance is around 10 km away from the center of the Wakkanai, and restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬) is relatively near here, and there are Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium (ノシャップ寒流水族館) and Wakkanai Lighthouse (稚内灯台) and restraunts.

Wakkanai has many inimitable sceneries in Hokkaido, and there are sightseeing spots in various places of Wakkanai city. Cape Soya (宗谷岬), Soya hills (宗谷丘陵), Wakkanai Park (稚内公園), Onuma Pond (大沼) are particularly famous. In addition, local people recommend the sunset in Yuhigaoka Parking (夕日が丘パーキング). By the way, Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Wakkanai, Sushi Tatsu (寿司竜), Robata Yezo-no-Sato (炉端 蝦夷の里), Yezo-banya (えぞ番屋), Izakaya Zakoya (居酒屋 雑魚や) and Steak House Vin (ヴァン) are popular in particular. I ate foods at the Vin, Mamiyado, Takaraya and Hanaichimonme, and those were tasty.

Cape Noshappu

Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬) is located in the northwestern part of Wakkanai city and is known as a cape that tourists can look over Rishiri Island (利尻島), Rebun Island (礼文島) and the beautiful setting sun. Sakhalin Island (サハリン), Russia is located in the north side of Cape Noshappu. There is Esandomari Fishing Port Park (恵山泊漁港公園) on the tip of the cape, and a monument of a dolphin and a monument of Cape Noshappu are built, and the Esandomari Fishing Port Park is adjacent to Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium and Wakkanai Lighthouse (ノシャップ寒流水族館) that is the second highest lighthouse in Japan, and there are souvenires and restaurants near those. There is Wakkanai Onsen (稚内温泉) near the cape, too. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. There is a restroom on the park. Article is here

WAKKANAI

Wakkanai (稚内) that 40,000 people live is the 21th largest city in Hokkaido and is the northernmost port town in Japan. As for climate, it features that average annual temperature is 7 degrees Celsius for a sea breeze and the wind is strong. High trees are hard to grow, and there are many sightseeing spots that a good scenery can be seen. Wakkanai station is the northenmost station in Japan, too, and Japane's Northernmost Railway Monument is built. Article is here

Steak House Vin

Steak House Vin (ステーキハウス ヴァン) is a steak restaurant in Wakkanai city. There is a building near Wakkanai station. It is known as the steak restaurant located in the northmost in Japan and visitors can eat soya beef (宗谷牛) at the restraunt. They garnered one star in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition. Business hours are, from 18:00 to 20:00, very short. An owner and his wife are at an old age and seemed to shorten working hours. Article is here

Mamiyado (間宮堂) is a popular ramen restraunt in Soyamisaki park, wakkanai city and is known for a catch phrase "The more ramen is served at the north, the better ramen is tasty (北へ行くほどラーメンがうまくなる)". A building is located on a hill, so view from the ramen restraunt is good. Dishes using seafood such as a sea urchin rice bowl as well as the ramen are served. By the way, they open a bussiness from mid April to mid November and close in a winter. Article is here

Salt Broth Ramen of Takaraya

Takaraya (たからや) is a long-established ramen restraunt in Wakkanai city and was founded in 1966. There is a building near Wakkanai station. It is famous for getting the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition. I visited here around 16:00 on weekdays. There was no visitor because it wss past lunchtime. The ramen restraunt was a typical ramen restraunt with a warmth of woods. There are some tables, so family customers seem to enjoy. Article is here

Hanaichimonme

Hanaichimonme Head Office (花いちもんめ) is a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant (回転寿司店) in Shiomi, Wakkanai city and is known as the northernmost conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Japan. I visited here with my friend, visiting Hokkaido for the first time, around 17:00. There were already several groups of visitors at the restaurant. We sat at counter seats at once. The sushi is gotten on a conveyor belt, but we can order it ordinary. I ordered restaurant's recommendations and seafood caught in Wakkanai's sea. Article is here

List of Day Trip Onsen

Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu. On the other hand, an accommodation without taking a day trip bath is Soya Palace and Onsen Minshuku Kita-no-Yado.

Wakkanai Health Increase Center Domu

Domu is a hot spring facility for day trip onsen founded in 1997, and is designed by Hokkaido Nikken Skkei inc. in the motif of a port city, so the appearance looks a ship and a port from the top. It is one of good points that the building is built facing the front of Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. When I visited here, a lot of local people came. Restraunt "Yunagi" (レストラン夕凪) is at the building, too. In addition, they issue a certificate for bathing in the Japan's northernmost onsen for JPY 100.

There are 1 open-air bath, 1 indoor bath, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 sleeping bath, 1 cascading bath, 1 medicated bath, 1 cold bath and 2 saunas at a large public bathhouse on the 2nd floor. The sunny bathhouse with a lot of windows is feeling good. By the way, a photography is prohibited at the bathhouse. Bad luck!

The indoor bath, the whirlpool bath, the cascading bath and the medicated bath are set along the windows, and the elliptical-shaped indoor bath is the size that about 12 people can take a bath, and the round whirlpool bath is the size that about 8 people can take a bath, and the round medicated bath is the size that about 2 people can take a bath, and the cascading bath seats 1 person. The sleeping bath seats 2 people beside a rocky wall. Almost baths use the heated natural hot spring diluted 5 times with water.

The ship-shaped open-air bath is the size that about 5 people can take a bath. A sense of openess can be felt without a roof. A view can not be enjoyed while bathing because of a blindfold fence. But bathers can enjoy the Sea of Japan and Mt. Rishirifuji while cooling heated body. It is really nice scenery. The sunset over the Sea of Japan seem to be beautiful.

The hot springs are sodium chloride carbonated spring, and are a little opaque and light yellow and have salty taste and oil smell, and have smooth and slippery touch, and are not drinkable because of circulation type baths. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 6.020 g/kg. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom and free hair dryers are installed at a dressing room.
