[Uzura Onsen in Assabu] Day Trip Onsen and Cantonese Cuisine Can Be Enjoyed at Assabu Agriculture Activation Center Accommodation Facilities Uzura Onsen

Uzura Onsen

Uzura Onsen (鶉温泉) is a hot spring place in Assabu town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city. Only Assabu Agriculture Activation Center Accommodation Facilities Uzura Onsen (厚沢部町農業活性化センター宿泊研修施設 うずら温泉) surrounded by fields is built. A convenience store is a little away from here. Tourist attractions relatively near here are Taikoyama Park (太鼓山公園), Ruins of Tate Castle (館城跡), Kamome Island (鴎島) and Kaiyomaru Battleship (開陽丸), Uzura Dam (鶉ダム). The Assabu is well-known for May Queen, and it is the first land that the May Queen born in England was cultivated in Hokkaido, so there is a hands-on agricultural farm for digging potatoes. By the way, Uzura Onsen and Inakuraishi Festival (うずら温泉&稲倉石まつり) is held in late June.

Ruins of Tate Castle

Tate Castle (舘城) is castle ruins on a small hill in Assabu town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city, and is surrounded by fields. The castle is the last castle of Matsumae clan (松前氏), a daimyo of Matsumae Domain (松前藩), in the Edo period, and it is said that the castle is the last Japanese style castle in Japan. In the Meiji Restoration (明治維新), it was attacked by the old Shogunate forces, and the castle was fallen for 75 days after construction. Now the castle is not built. A parking space is along a road, and cherry trees are planted at the site, and there is no sightseeing facility in particular except a very small museum. Tatejo-ato Festival (館城跡まつり) is held on the second Sunday in June, and visitors can enjoy the stage of Hakodate war. Admission free. The parking space is free of charge. Read More

Kamome Island

Kamome Island (かもめ島) is a land-tied island in the Esashi town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city, and its elevation is about 20 m, and its circumference is about 2.6 km. The island was named after its shape resembled a gull from the top * The Kamome means "A gull" in English. But the island used to be called "Benten Island (弁天島)" in Edo period, and used to be used as a port of Kitamae-bune (北前船 * cargo ships sailed the Japan Sea during the Edo period), and ruins of moored Kitamae-bune (北前船係留跡) in old days has been left now. A battleship "Kaiyomaru (開陽丸)" of the Tokugawa Shogunate sank off the Esashi is restored, and is displayed near the Kamome Island. Admission fee is JPY 500. Assabu Agriculture Activation Center Accommodation Facilities Uzura Onsen

Uzura Onsen is a small-sized onsen inn founded in 1955. A building with a pointed roof catches people's eyes. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 400. Chinese restraunt "Saifuto" (彩風塘) is at the building, too, and visitors for day trip bath can use the restraunt. Visitors can savor Cantonese cuisine supervised by Mr. Tomohiro Miyagawa (宮川朝広), ex head chef of Sapporo Keio Plaza Hotel Chinese Cuisine Restaurant "Nanen", and it is very popular. The onsen is popular with local people, too, and 8 local bathers took a bath when I visited here in the evening.

There are 1 indoor bath, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 cold bath and 1 sauna at a public bathhouse. The sunny white tiled bathhouse with a high ceiling is not large but cozy. The indoor bath is the size that about 10 people can take a bath, and uses heated warm springs. The whirlpool bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and uses heated water.

The hot springs are simple alkaline hot spring, and are clear and colorless and have neither taste nor smell, and are not drinkable because of circulation type baths. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 0.609 g/kg. Soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom and a paid hair dryer are installed at a dressing room.
