It is the origin of the Utanobori Onsen that Mr. Fukuichi Asakura (朝倉福市) found gushing cold springs in Taisho period, when he came stream fishing. After that, he built a onsen hut in 1933. A type of the cold springs is natural carbonated spring, so it is an unusual spring in Hokkaido. As far as I know, hot spring places with the natural carbonated spring in Hokkaido are Gomi Onsen in Shimokawa, Kyowa Onsen in Aibetsu, Marumigaoka Onsen in Otofuke, Shilala Onsen in Shakotan, Kogane Onsen in Niseko and Kaminokuni Onsen in Kaminokuni. But small hot springs gush out. Tourist attractions relatively near here are Matsuyama Wetland (松山湿原), Mt. Hakodake (函岳), Bifuka Utanobori Super Woodland Path (美深歌登スーパー林道), Trucka Trolley Kingdom (トロッコ王国) and Usutaibe Senjoiwa Rocks (ウスタイベ千畳岩). In addition, Speaking of Esashi, hair crab is famous, and Esashi Crab Festival (枝幸かにまつり) is held in early July.

By the way, the northernmost high moor in the Japan is Meguma-numa Wetland (メグマ沼湿原) in Wakkanai. The high moor does not point to a high place, and point to a wetland formed at higher place than ground-water level. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. A public restroom is built beside the parking lot. Besides the parking lot and the restroom, there is not a sightseeing facility at all. Tenryu Marsh (天竜沼) is nearby the parking lot.
