February 15th, 2017
Menya Okhotsk (麺屋おほーつく) is a popular Udon restaurant along National Route 238 in Yubetsu town between Monbetsu city and Abashiri city, and was founded in 2009. It is famous for giving the Michelin Plate by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition. Mr. Kimishige Maetani (前谷公茂), a restaurant owner, enrolled Udon School of Yamato Manufacturing (大和製作所) in Kagawa prefecture (香川県 * Udon country) after retiring, and trained his cooking skills at Udon restaurant "Kijoan (亀城庵)" after graduating. He wanted to make Udon noodles with ingredients produced in Hokkaido. Now he cooks the Udon noodles with a lots of the ingredients produced in the Hokkaido and Udon noodle made from flour "Kitahonami (きたほなみ)" produced in the Hokkaido. He is particular about not serving boiled Udon noodles for over 20 minutes. The restaurant is popular for savoring Udon noodles that is offshoot of Kagawa udon even in the Hokkaido. Their business time is only lunchtime (11:00-15:00).
The restaurant is 1-story wooden building, and is like a lodge. The warmth of the wood is felt. A veranda is provided, too. The restaurant is not so large, but counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that family customers also enjoy meals. By the way, a little old menu is here. Ebi-mochi-bukkake Udon (えびもちぶっかけ)" (Udon noodles topped with prawn and rice cake) is the most popular dish in the Menya Okhotsk.

A sandbar of 200 to 700 m width separates the lake from the Sea of Okhotsk (オホーツク海), and the lake links the sea with only 2 points. In old days, the sandbar separeted the lake from the sea depending on seasons perfectly. The perimeter of the lake is about 87 km, and the maximum depth is 19.6 m. The lake has no name in Ainu language, and they called it just lake. It is well-known for tasty seafood such as Oyster and Scallop, and fishing Japanese pond smelt is popular in a winter. About 200 kinds of 1.2 million tulips are planted on the site of 700,000 m2 at present. I think that visitors must be very impressed by colorful tulip lines on the flatland. I visited here around 11:00 on a weekday. A customer is only me for a winter. The counter seats were decked with flowers, and it seemed to make female customers happy. I sat a counter seat, and read a menu. "Ebi-mochi-bukkake Udon (Udon noodles topped with prawns and rice cakes)" was most popular, and a large mixed vegetable and seafood tempura "Bikkuri-Kakiage (びっくりかき揚げ)" looked tasty, but I decided to eat an ever-popular menu the first time, so I ordered the Ebi-mochi-bukkake Udon. The price was JPY 980.
Afer waiting for about 10 minutes, a bowl of udon noodles was served. About 10 minutes later, the Ebi-mochi-bukkake Udon were served. As for Bukkake Udon, Udon sauce is separated from Udon noodles, and they use no chemical condiments. It tastes a little sweet. Customers pour the Udon sauce into the Udon noodles on a dish. The udon was topped with prawn tempra and fried rice cakes, and green radish sprouts accentuated beautiful look.
Thick chewy Udon noodles were very tasty. The fresh prawn tempra was good texture, and the fried rice cakes were not too deep fried, and were chewy texture. It was Tasty!
