Tokachi Millennium Forest
Tokachi Millennium Forest (十勝千年の森) is a popular garden at the foot of Hidaka Mountains in Shimizu town located in the northwestern direction of Obihiro city, and is near Shimizu Maruyama Observation Deck (清水円山展望台), and is one of 8 gardens chosen by Hokkaido Garden Path (北海道ガーデン街道). Mr. Dan Pearson, a famous British gardener, designed this garden, and the Tokachi Millennium Forest has been opend since 2008. 5 gardens, ranches, Garden Cafe Rau Rau (ガーデンカフェ ラウラウ), Natural Cheese Making Experience Studio Kisara (ナチュラルチーズ体験工房 キサラ), a public restroom and a parking lot are built at the site of about 40 ha. Except tour on foot, segwey tour is psroivded, too, and it is popular. Admission is JPY 1200. The parking lot is free of charge. They close a business from late October to late April.
The Tokachi Millennium Forest has 5 gardens, Earth Garden, Forest Garden, Meadow Garden, Farm Garden and HGS Designer's Garden. In those gardens, the Earth Garden and the Meadow Garden have been given Grand Award and International Award by SGD Awards 2012, so the Tokachi Millennium Forest has a good reputation internationally.
Speaking of the Shimizu, some restaurants serve Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl (牛玉ステーキ丼), a local dish. I ate it at Restaurant Fusha (レストラン風車), and it was tasty. As for tasty restaurants in the Shimizu, Mebunryo (目分料), Sobadokoro Mishina (そば処 三品), Tonkatsu-no-Mishina (とんかつのみしな), Sobadokoro Noshijuku (そば処 農志塾), Drive-in Ito Tokachi Shimizu Head Office (ドライブインいとう とかち清水本店) and Horyu Shimizu Branch (寶龍 清水店) are popular in particular. Unfortunately, a day trip onsen can not be enjoyed in the Shimizu.
Shimizu Maruyama Observation Deck
Maruyama Observation Deck (円山展望台) is a viewing platform on a small hill in Maruyama Ranch, Shimizu town located in the northwestern direction of Obihiro city, and is near Tokachi Millennium Forest (十勝千年の森). Here is known as a good place to view Tokachi Plain (十勝平野), so visitors can enjoy a good scenery with few artifacts because the Maruyama Observation Deck is surrounded by pastures. The Maruyama Ranch is used as shooting places for Japanese Movie "Silver Spoon" (映画「銀の匙」) and NHK Morning Drama serials "The Summer Sky" (NHK連続テレビ小説「なつぞら」). A parking lot, a public restroom, a field kitchen, outdoor tables, Gozu Kannon (牛頭観世音菩薩) as well as the observation deck are built at the site. But the public restroom and the field kitchen are closed. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Read More
Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl
I visited here to eat Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl (十勝清水牛玉ステーキ丼) around 15:00 on a weekday. No customer enjoyed their meal. I sat at a table seat, and ordered the Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl. The price was JPY 980. The Diced Steak and Scrambled Eggs Rice Bowl is a local gourmet born on July 17, 2010 in the Shimizu. It won consecutive victories in Local Gourmet Grand Prix Hokkaido (新・ご当地グルメグランプリ北海道) 2013 and 2014. Some restaurants in the Shimizu serve it. Read More
Gardens of Tokachi Millennium Forest
The Earth Garden, the Forest Garden, the Meadow Garden, the Farm Garden and the HGS Designer's Garden are built at the site. The Tokachi Millennium Forest has the only entrance, so visitors should enter the gardens through Visitor Center Mansard Hall. At the Visitor Center, a ticket as well as their cheese are sold, and documents related to the Tokachi Millennium Forest are displayed. Here is map
The Tokachi Millennium Forest is very large, so I guess that it takes about 2-3 hours to look around on foot. I expect that walkers are exhausted if they look around all the gardens, so they should bring water. Besides, I recommend that visiotrs wear comfortable shoes, too.
The Earth Garden is the largest garden in the Tokachi Millennium Forest, and a conbination of waved lawns, Millenium Hill (千年の丘) and the Hidaka Mountains is very good. The Natural Cheese Making Experience Studio Kisara, Kisara-no-Kakera (キサラのかけら * A piece of Kisara), Sky TV for Hokkaido (北海道のためのスカイTV), Camuy Circle (カムイのサークル), 7 Diamonds (七つのダイヤモンド) and Venus-no-Kakera (ヴィーナスのかけら * A piece of Venus) are built at the site. A view from the lawns is good, and Tokachi Plain (十勝平野) from the hilltop of the Millenium Hill is also very good.
The Forest Garden is a garden made in a forest. At the garden, some streams flow, and leaves are fallen, and mushrooms grow, and natural process is repeated. Some wooden objects and something such as remains of a fort are built here and there, so I think that visitors should look around to find those. Here is just nature, so a lot of insects grow.
Native species and garden species grow at the Meadow Garden. Different flowers and plants can be seen depending on seasons, so here is suitable for photogenic flowers and plants. Types of seasonal flowers and plants are displayed at the entrance beside the parking lot.
The Farm Garden is next to the Meadow Garden. To be honest, I do not know where the Farm Garden ends, so it is about Farm Garden. Here is a place to feel agriculture, foods and a garden. They raise vegetables, goat and sheep, so a typical atmosphere of Hokkaido can be felt. Rose Garden, Goat Farm, the Garden Cafe Rau Rau are built at the site, and foods and drinks can be savored. A lot of visitors come the cafe to cure their fatigue for walking.
HGS Designer's Garden
Hokkaido Garden Show Designer's Garden is a garden for the Hokkaido Garden Show held in 2012, and is next to a pasture for horses. But I could not find where the HGS Designer's Garden was. Some walks are built around the garden, visitors can enjoy a curved wooden bridge called Crossing and a lots of wind chimes with strange views and sounds.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
