May 13th, 2014

Tenninkyo Onsen

Tenninkyo Onsen (天人峡温泉) is a hot-spring place in Higashikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city. In Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園), the Tenninkyo Onsen as well as Sounkyo is surrounded by columnar joints, and fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and is called a back room of Asahikawa (旭川の奥座敷). It is said that secret onsen is easily accessible by a road in the mountain. By the way, the road sometimes is closed by disaster. There are 2 onsen ryokan, Tenninkaku (天人閣) and Oyado Shikishima-so (お宿敷 島荘). Footbath "Tennyo-no-Ashiyu" (天女の足湯) and Takimidai Lookout (滝見台) are provided, too. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. There used to be 4 accommodations, and 2 accommodations, Tenninkyo Park Hotel (天人峡パークホテル) and Tenninkyo Grand Hotel (天人峡グランドホテル), has been closed, so the hot spring place looks a deserted street.

Rocks and falls are well-known, and Hagoromo Falls (羽衣の滝) with the largest fall in Hokkaido (2nd largest fall in Japan), Shikishima Falls (敷島の滝) called "Niagara Falls of East", Amatsuiwa Rocks (あまつ岩), Mikaeriiwa Rocks (見返り岩) and Namidaiwa Rocks (涙岩) can be seen. But a walking path to the falls interrupted due to a landslide, so tourists are prohibited to visit the Hagoromo Falls and Shikishima Falls at present. * It is planning to be restored in 2018. Hiking can be enjoyed in a summer, and fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn.

It is said that the origin of the Tenninkyo Onsen is that Mr. Tamezo Matsuyama (松山多米蔵) found hot springs kwown by Ainu people, and built Matsuyama Onsen Ryokan in 1897. It used to be named Matsuyama Onsen. Mr. Keigetsu Omachi (大町桂月) that is famous as the godparent of Sounkyo named the falls the Hagoromo (the celestial raiment robe of an angel) Falls in 1918. Tenninkyo Shrine was built in 1932. I do not know the origin of the Tenninkyo's name, and I suppose that the Tenninkyo was named to think of the celestial raiment robe of the angel. The Matsuyama Onsen was unified the official name "Tenninkyo Onsen" in 1937. The type of the hot springs is Sodium and calcium magnesium sulfate bicarbonate chloride spring, and all the accommodations use free flowing hot springs. The Tenninkyo Onsen is confident of their quality of the hot springs and freshness. The hot springs contain much meta-silicic acid effective for beautiful skin, so women may be gald.

A parking lot for free is in the center of the Tenninkyo Onsen, and is adjacent to Footbath "Tennyo-no-Ashiyu". By the way, direct buses, Ideyu-go (いで湯号), run between the Asahikawa to the Tenninkyo Onsen. Unfortunately, nonstop buses do not run from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport to the Tenninkyo Onsen.

Tenninkaku

Tenninkaku is a large-sized long-established onsen ryokan founded in 1900 at the end of a road, and has taken over the Matsuyama Onsen Ryokan (松山温泉旅館) founded by Mr. Tamezo Mastuyama. A building is built on a gorge along Chubetsu River, and its feature are old appearance and interior decoration. Namidaiwa Rocks is across the Chubetsu River from the ryokan, and Tenninkyo Shrine is built on the site, too. High quality hot springsare popular onsen lovers and visitors for hot-spring cure. The Tenninkaku is one of 18 onsen fasilities that the Japan Association of Secluded Onsen Heritage (日本温泉遺産を守る会) will recognize the hot spring facilities using fresh free flowing hot springs in Hokkaido. But poeple liking new facilities and clean bath may not be suitable for the ryokan. They have 4 buildings, Main Building, 1st Annex Building, 3rd Annex Building and Large Public Bathhouse "Iwaburo" (岩風呂浴場), and a corridor from an entrance to the bathhouse is like a maze.

They have 2 large public bathhouses, Large Public Bathhouse "Iwaburo (岩風呂)" and Large Public Bathhouse "Mikaeriiwa (見返り岩)" on the 1st basement floor of the 3rd Annex Building. The bathhouses for men or women are replaced depending on time. If visitors for day trip bath take a bath, only men can take a bath at the Large Public Bathhouse "Iwaburo", and only women can take a bath at the Large Public Bathhouse "Mikaeriiwa", so if the visitors stay at the ryokan, they can enjoy both bathhouses. There are 1 outdoor bath, 2 indoor baths and 3 goemon baths with cold water at the Large Public Bathhouse "Mikaeriiwa". There are 1 outdoor bath and 2 indoor baths at the Large Public Bathhouse "Iwaburo". I took a bath at the Large Public Bathhouse "Iwaburo". It has a feature such as a cave. Because I have never seen such a view, I think that those are unusual hot springs.

A drinking hot spring facility is installed, too. But unfortunately, the hot springs did not flow at the drinking hot spring facility. Possibly the hot spring may begin to flow dipending on the time. In addition, a drinking cold water facility is installed, too. The baths use free flowing hot springs. The large indoor bath is the size that about 15 people can take a bath. The small indoor bath is the size that about 8 people can take a bath.

The open-air bath surrounded by rocks has a water wheel, and is the size that about 20 people can take a bath. It can see everything from a parking lot at the daytime, so it is exclusively for men during the daytime. Without a roof and a wall, it has a sense of openness, and bathers can feel comfortable very much. If the weather is nice, the bathers can enjoy more. The Cubetsu River flows beside the open-air bath, and the free flowing hot spring flow to the Cubetsu River.
