[Takise Coast in Otobe] Shirafura and Kuguri-iwa Rock

August 4th, 2019

Takise Coast

Takise Coast (滝瀬海岸) is a coast in Otobe town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city, and a sandy beach spreads over for about 6 km length. The coast is known for Shirafura (シラフラ) and Kuguri-iwa Rock (くぐり岩). The Kuguri-iwa Rock is a rock with a hole to pass through the rock. * The Kuguri means "Passing through" in English. The Shirafura means "White sloping land" in Ainu language. As its name suggests, white stratums stretch for about 4 km. Especially, a part of the white stratums has about 500 m length and about 30 m height, and is a very good precipitous cliff. The view reminds visitors of famous white precipitous cliffs in Europe, and the not typical scenery in Japan becomes popular. But a sightseeing facility is not built, and only parking lot is provided near the Kuguri-iwa Rock. Admission free. The parking lot is fre of charge.

Tateura Onsen (館浦温泉) and Gorinzawa Onsen (五厘沢温泉) are near the Takise Coast, and a day trip onsen can be enjoyed in the Tateura Onsen. Speaking of the Otobe, tasty water is famous. At Toi-no-mizu (といの水), Hachimansan-no-Mizu (八幡さんの水), Noto-no-mizu (能登の水), Komonai-no-Mizu (こもないの水) and Himekawa-no-Mizu (ひめかわの水), visitors can drink it for free. Hot coffee using the water has a good reputation.

Shirafura and Kuguri-iwa Rock

A guide signboard is built at the parking near the Kuguri-iwa Rock. After going to the beach for 100 m, visitors reach the Kuguri-iwa Rock. Then they turn the left, and the precipitous cliffs of the Shirafura comes into the sight after walking the Takise Coast for 600 m. I visited here on weekdays, and no one came. I did not know that until I heard about here from Sabu, my friend, so here is not crowded.

First I went toward the Shirafura. Because I visited here at low tide, it was easy to walk on the sandy beach. But please watch your steps because the sandy beach is submerged by the sea at high tide. The sandy beach sometimes gets wet, so visitors had better wear comfortable shoes such as rain boots.

Although it was unfortunate that the sandy beach was littered with drifted bottles and cans, the white precipitous cliffs were very impressive. It is almost as if a castle wall appears in a fantasy movie. Volcanic ejecta fell on the bottom of the sea 5 million years ago, and stratums pushed up, and the white walls have been made by sea breeze and waves. I should not wonder if here was chosen as a shooting place of a movie or TVCM.

In the Edo period, the Otobe prospered as Sengoku-basho (千石場所 * 1,000 koku fishes were caught only in a place. The koku (石) is a Japanese old unit. 1,000 koku is about 150,000 kg) for herring. In the Keicho era, Edo period, fishermen of those days made a hole in the rock to catch the herring efficiently, and carried the fish through the tunnel. The remains were the Kuguri-iwa Rock. I also wonder that they thought the rock was an obstacle because the coast was interrupted by the rock. The tunnel is flooded at high tide, so they can not go and come to the other side of the roock if the hole is not made. I do not know what other hole is. Maybe the rock was collapsed naturally. By the way, a strangely shaped rock called "Gunkan-iwa (軍艦岩 * The Gunkan means "Battle ship" in English)" is near the Kuguri-iwa Rock, too.
