Mochigashitsukasa Shiroya (餅菓子商 白谷) is a sweet rice cake shop in front of Hokusei Gakuen Girls Junior and Senior High School (北星学園女子中学高等学校) in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and is near Subway Tozai Line Nishi 18-chome Station. Mr. Hisayasu Nakatani (中谷 尚泰), the founder, has opened it since 2011. The Shiroya is one of rare sweet rice cake shops in the Sapporo, and is popular with local people. Soft round rice cakes (大福) as well as Dorayaki cakes using rice cake and non-sweet rice cakes are served. The shop is not large, but some table seats are provided, so custmers can enjoy foods and drinks.
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More
Sweet Rice Cakes
I visited here around 14:00 on a weekday. 6 preceding old women bought most of sweet rice cakes and dorayaki cakes. The shop was popular, after all. When my turn came, less than 10 sweet rice cakes were displayed in a showcase, so I had to visit here in early hours. I bought a sweet rice cake with cream cheese (レアクリームチーズ大福 * JPY 140), a rice cake sprinkled with chocolate powder (チョコもち * JPY 140), a rice cake sprinkled with soy flour (きなこもち * JPY 140) and a rice cake stuffed with fresh cream and strawberry jam (くりぃむいちご * JPY 140). Customers could not use tables on that day, so I brought my sweet rice cakes, and dished up those on a plate.
Speaking of sweet rice cakes, those reminded me of Soft Daifuku (ソフト大福) sold in Furen, Nayoro, but the Shiroya made a few adjustments to sweet rice cakes like western cakes. I felt that those looked like original cakes with the texture of rice cakes. Kaze-no-ko Mochi glutinous rice (風の子もち) produced in the Nayoro and adzuki bean produced in Hokkaido were used in raw materials. Their rice cakes were soft, and were lightly sweetened, and were good combination with sweet ingredient. Thanks for the tasty sweet rice cakes!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
