Taiyaki Sapporo Yanagiya (たいやき札幌柳屋) is a taiyaki cake shop opened in 1985 at a residential area in Higashi ward, Sapporo city, and is near Sakaenishi Park (栄西公園). Mr. Kunio Meguro (目黒 国夫), an shop owner, has made taiyaki cakes (a Japanese fish-shaped cake) for more than 50 years. He used to work at Yanagiya (柳屋) in Nihonbashi-Ningyocho, Tokyo (東京日本橋人形町), so the Sapporo Yanagiya has a connection with the Tokyo Yanagiya. This shop sells only taiyaki cakes, and flavor is only smashed sweet red beans on a menu. They have been run the taiyaki cake shop in the Sapporo since nearly 30 years ago, but they have still followed a tradition of the Tokyo Yanagiya. I think that it is fantastic. Their business hour is from 14:00 to 16:00. A line is expected because of only 2 hours.
Speaking of following the tradition, it is a way of baking taiyaki cakes. The way of the baking is named one order baking (1丁焼き), and it is a way to bake taiyaki cakes one by one. It is also called "A natural product for a sea bream (天然もの * Taiyaki of Tai means "Sea bream" in Japanese)" named by Mr. Yasuhiko Miyajima (宮嶋康彦). The Yanagiya that has been established since 1916 in Nihonbashi-Ningyocho, Tokyo is one of the most famous natural product taiyaki cake shops, and is called "One of 3 Major Taiyaki Cake Shop in Tokyo". I am convinced that the Sapporo Yanagiya is called "The only natural product taiyaki cake following the tradition of the Yanagiya in Hokkaido".
By the way, a farm-raised product (養殖物) is a way to bake 4-10 taiyaki cakes simultaneously. In the case of the natural product, because they bake taiyaki cakes one by one, they may make a timely baking taiyaki cakes. But their working hour considerably increases. The shop is a small prefabricate building, and some taiyaki pans are on a taiyaki cooker at the shop. A place for customers to enjoy foods and drinks is not provided at the shop.
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More
I visited here around 14:30 on a weekday. Fortunately, only a customer waited at the shop. I bought 2 taiyaki cakes. The price was JPY 140 per one. I chatted with the shop owner while waiting. Customers came successively, so it was popular after all.
It was a highlight of the natural product that a fragrant shell was crispy texture, and sweet bean jam spread all over every corner. The sweet bean jam was homemade smashed sweet red beans. Because it was not too sweet, I supposed that even non people with a sweet tooth maight like it. Visitors came incessantly, so I thougt that they had a lots of fans. You can understand a popular reason if you eat their taiyaki cakes. Thanks for the tasty taiyaki cakes!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
