Mirupisu Store (ミルピス商店) is a popular juice store near Cape Kustugata in Kustugata, Rishiri island, and is located in the western part of the island. Speaking of the Rishiri, Kombu or Mirupisu (ミルピス) are famous. The mirupisu is well-known as a homemade lactic acid drink sold only in the Rishiri Island. Mrs. Yachiyo Morihara (森原八千代) that is also known as Obachan (おばちゃん * A lady) is a shop owner. After they discontinued their ranch, they have sold the Mirupisu since 1965. Juices made from edible wild plants and nuts in the Rishiri as well as the Mirupis are also sold. They accept to deliver packages to anywhere in Japan by fax.
Kustugata-misaki Park (沓形岬公園) is a park at Cape Kustugata located in the westernmost tip of Rishiri Island (利尻島), and is also a lookout point next to Kustugata port (沓形港). The park is famous for seeing beautiful rising sun and sunset. The park covered with lava rocks, Kustugata-misaki Lighthouse (沓形岬灯台), Kustugata-misaki Park Camping Ground (沓形岬公園キャンプ場), a parking lot and a public restroom are built at the site. A coin-operated laundry is also provided at the camp ground, and it is very useful for riders or campers. By the way, a round road around the park is one-way road. Admission free. A building like a barn at the innermost place of a private house facing Hokkaido Road 105 is their store. The appearance of the building and the interior decoration have an old atmosphere. The store is not so large, and some cards for autographs are hung on a wall, so it is popular after all. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy drinks.
There are some means of transportation for the island tourism, for example, a sightseeing bus and a fixed-route bus managed by Soya bus (宗谷バス), a sightseeing taxi, a rental car, a rental motor scooter and a rental bicycle. I went around the Rishiri Island by the rental motor scooter, and it was very comfortable. By the way, if tourists raise their hand in the case of fixed-route bus happening to pass, they can get on the bus without a bus stop, and can get off the bus without a bus stop.

Since this store became famous, I visited here around 10:00 on a weekday. When I entered the store, there was nobody at the store. A few minutes later, Mrs. Morihara came to here. She told me "When a door of the store opens, her home chime sounds". I sat a table seat, and ordered a bottle of the Mirupisu. The price was JPY 350.
She also served a small bowl of Kappa Ebisen (かっぱえびせん * Japanese famous snack) on the house. I opened a cover of the milpisu with an exclusive tool, and drank it immediately. It tasted sweet-sour milk flavor. The aftertaste was light and refreshing. It was tasty!
They also sell Alpine Leek Juice (行者にんにくジュース), Aloe Juice (アロエジュース), Gooseberry Juice (グスベリジュース), Mountain Grape Juice (山ぶどうジュース), Perilla Juice (しそジュース), Strawberry Juice (いちごジュース), Carrot Juice (にんじんジュース), Rishiri Kombu Juice (利尻昆布ジュース), Wild Silverberry Juice (野グミジュース), Kiwi Berry Juice (こくわジュース) as well as the Mirupisu. All juices are additive-free and undiluted solutions are sold. She told me that you could order by FAX, and an order form was handed to me. Thanks for the tasty drinks!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
