May 14th, 2015
Kuwataya Head Office (桑田屋本店) is a panjyu (ぱんじゅう) store at Otaru canal terminal (小樽運河ターミナル) in Ironai, Otaru city and was founded in 2000. They sell a bun with bean-jam filling (まんじゅう) other than the panju, too. The panjyu is a muffin which put Japanese muffin containing bean jam (今川焼き) and octopus dumplings (たこ焼き) together. It is baked wheat flour dough with bean jam or custard cream and so on. Hokkaido has the panjyu stores in Otaru, Sapporo, Yubari, each panjyu seem to be different in kinds of bean jam and form.
Because there are tables and chairs at Otaru canal terminal, tourists can eat foods here. I ordered panju combo with a soft drink. The price is JPY 450. The tourists choose 3 pieces of panju among 8-9 kinds of panju and soft drinks.
She replied that custard cream was popular when I asked a waitress about recommendation. Therefore I chose the panju with custard cream flavor, the panju with green tea bean paste flavor, the cherry bean paste flavor and a coke. All raw materials of the panju were produced in Hokkaido. the panju was the form such as a bullet of a pistol, a thickness of crispy dough was about 3 mm. It was pleasant to be different in its decoration by each kinds.
