Kitakaro (北菓楼) is a popular confectionery store based in Sunagawa city between Sapporo city and Asahikawa city, and has been opened since 1991. It is an affiliated company of Hori corp. (株式会社ホリ) that is famous for Yubari Melon Pure Jelly (夕張メロンピュアゼリー). The head office is in the Sunagawa, and some branches as well as Sapporo Honkan (札幌本館) and Otaru Honkan (小樽本館) open a business in Sapporo, the Sunagawa and New Chitose Airport. They serve Western confectionery and Japanese confectionery, and Hokkaido Kaitaku Okaki Rice Cracker (北海道開拓おかき), Baumkuchen, Cream Puff and so on are popular.
My visited place is the Kitakaro Sapporo Honkan this time, and it has been opened since 2016, and is near Former Hokkaido Government Office Building in Chuo ward, Sapporo city. Their building is a stone library built in 1926, and is renovated by Mr. Tadao Ando (安藤 忠雄), a famous architect. Kitakaro Shop (北菓楼ショップ), Former Entrance Hall (旧玄関ホール) and Migishi Satellite (ミギシ・サテライト) are on the 1st floor, and Kitakaro Cafe (北菓楼カフェ), Kitakaro Library (北菓楼ライブラリー) and Memorial Room (メモリアルルーム) are on the 2nd floor. The main feature of the Kitakaro Sapporo Honkan is large bookshelves utilized an atmosphere of the library. Limited products are sold at the Kitakaro Shop, and a concert is sometimes held at the Kitakaro Cafe.
Former Hokkaido Government Office
Former Hokkaido Government Office (北海道道庁旧本庁舎) is a historical building in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and is located in the downtown of the Sapporo, so it also is close to Sapporo Station and Odori Park (大通公園). Current Hokkaido Government Office is adjacent to the Former Hokkaido Government Office. Its common name is "Akarenga (赤レンガ * Red Bricks)" by Hokkaido people, and it was built as a neo-baroque style building using a lot of red bricks in 1888, and has been designated as a national important cultural property. A designer is Mr. Seijiro Hirai (平井晴二郎). The Bureau of Hokkaido Development used to be established here, and has been the center of the Hokkaido politics since the old days. The Current Hokkaido Government Office, North Pond and South Pond are built at the site, too. Here is a peaceful place for Sapporo citizens, too, and about 650,000 tourists come to a popular tourist attraction. The Former Hokkaido Government Office is famous as a popular photo spot because of photogenic appearance. Admission free. A parking lot is not provided. Read More
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More
Because a former co-worker came from Tokyo was surprised at good value for the price of a cake set, I decided to visit here. It was almost full when I visited around 14:00 on a weekday. After all it was popular. I took a seat, and read a menu, and ordered a cake set. The price was JPY 750.
This cake set was a set of a cake, a chiffon cake, a cup of an ice cream and a drink. Customers could choose a type of cake (cream puff) among 10 types of the cakes. Speaking of the Kitakaro, the cream puff is famous, too, so I could not decide which to choose the cream puff among 3 types of the cream puff. I was advised by a waitress, and chose Biscuit that was a rare type of tearing the cream puff and eating the cream puff.
Puff shell of the Biscuit contained cheese, and its feature was salty. It went well with sweet cream, and was tasty! The puff shell was the moist firmness, and looked like a bun rather than the cream puff. The chiffon cake prized very much by the former co-worker was very fluffy, and was good! Blue-berried honeysuckle sauce was sprinkled over the ice cream, and was good, too. Thanks for the tasty sweets!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
