[Local Speciality of Hokkaido] Nostalgic Yokan Bread
Yokan Bread (ようかんパン * Sweet Bun Half Covered with Red Bean Paste) is a sweetened bun half covered with red bean paste, and whip cream is in the bun. I did not know that it was a local speciality of Hokkaido until then, but Ms. Tani told me about Yokan twist, and I knew that the Yokan Bread was the local bun of the Hokkaido. That reminded me of my childhood.
As for the Yokan Bread, “Jumbo Yokan Roll (ジャンボようかんロール)” and “Yokan Twist (ようかんツイスト)” are produced by Nichiryo Baking Co., LTD (日糧パン), “Sun Snake (サンスネーク)” is produced by Yamazaki Baking Co.,Ltd (山崎製パン), “Yokan Doughnut (ようかんドーナツ)” is produced by Robapan Co.,Ltd (ロバパン), “Yokan-chan (ようかんちゃん)” is produced by Hokuo, “Yokan and Cream (ようかん＆クリーム)” is produced by Seicomart (セイコーマート), those are famous products. Probably it was the Jumbo Yokan Roll that I ate in old days. My grandma gave me it, and I always mistook Yokan (red bean paste) for chocolate cream, and I remember that I was regretted to eat the chocolate cream. The sweetness of Japanese sweets was not tasty for me in my childhood, but I become an adult, and come to feel tasty. Actually, when I ate it after a long absence, I founded tasty bun unexpectedly.
The Yokan Breads are sold at a convenience store or a supermarket in the Hokkaido. Yokan Bun (Yokan-pan) like a bun filled with bean jam (あんぱん * Anpan) produced by Fuji Baking Co., LTD (富士製パン) in Fuji city, Shizuoka prefecture in 1956 and Yokan Bun (Yokan-pan) like a bun filled with bean jam (Anpan) produced by Hishida Bakery (菱田ベーカリー) in Kochi prefecture in 1960s are kown as well as the Yokan Breads in the Hokkaido. Because the Yokan Bread has been cooked in Hokkaido since 1970s, there would be anything concerned with Yokan (red bean paste) at that time.
