[Sunayu around Lake Kussharo] Hot Springs Ooze out from Sandy Beach

Sunayu

Sunayu (砂湯) is a touring attraction along Hokkaido Road 52 in the eastern side of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), and is named because hot springs ooze out from sandy beach on the lakeside. It means "A place that sand gushes out" in Ainu language, too, so the hot springs have oozed out since a very long time ago. In Akan Mashu National Park, Sunayu Campsite (砂湯キャンプ場), Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip (砂湯レストハウス レタラチップ), Koike Shoten souvenir shop (小池商店), a public restroom and a parking lot on the site. The Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip has a restraunt and souvenir shop, and a swan boat can be rented, too. In addition, they accept a motorboat tour. Fresh green, camping, playing in water, fishing and canoeing can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and a winter scenery and whooper swans can be enjoyed in a winter. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.

The Lake Kussharo is the largest caldera lake in Japan in Teshikaga town located in the northeastern part of Lake Akan (阿寒湖), and its shape tuend into the current shape by large-scale eruptions 40,000 years ago. Before then, the lake was larger round lake than the current lake. It is the 2nd largest caldera lake in the world after Lake Toba in Indonesia, too. In Akan Mashu National Park, The perimeter of the lake is about 57 km, and the maximum depth is 117 m, and Nakashima (中島), the largest island on the fresh water lake in the Japan, flotas on the surface of the lake, but landing is prohibited. There are Mt. Ike-no-Yu Onsen (池の湯温泉) is a hot spring place in Teshikaga town located in the north part of Kushiro city. The hot spring gushes out at the lakeshore in the southwestern part of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) in Akan Mashu National Park, and it is one of hot spring places around the Lake Kussharo. It is hard to find the Ike-no-Yu Onsen, and there are a parking lot and the open-air bath next to Matsuya Ryokan (松屋旅館 * Shut Down) after visitors turn at a sign board of the Matsuya Ryokan, and go straight. Nibushi Onsen (仁伏温泉) is a hot spring place in Teshikaga town located in the northern part of Kushiro city. The hot spring gushes out at the lakeshore in the eastern part of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) in Akan Mashu National Park, and it is one of hot spring places around the Lake Kussharo. Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園) has Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), the largest caldera lake in Japan, Lake Mashu (摩周湖), the 6th largest caldera lake in the Japan, and Lake Akan (阿寒湖), the 7th largest caldera lake in the Japan, in the eastern part of Hokkaido, and the oldest national park in Hokkaido along with Daisestuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the north part of Kushiro-Sitsugen National Park (釧路湿原国立公園), too. In the national park, there are unique mountains such as Mt. Oakandake (雄阿寒岳), Mt. Meakandake (雌阿寒岳), Mt. Akanfuji (阿寒富士), Mt. Mokoto (藻琴山), Mt. Iou (硫黄山), Mt. Mashudake (摩周岳) and Mt. The Sunayu is an usual sandy beach on the lakeside, but the hot springs ooze out if visitors dig the sandy beach for about 10 cm. A scoop is rented at the Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip, and the visitors can make a sandy bath as they like. But the hot springs are cold depending on places. A lot of people come, so you had better wear your swimsuit and bring your towel to wipe your feet. In the winter, the lake near the lakeside is not freezed by the hot springs, and a lot of the whooper swans pass the winter. Tourists can observe those closely.

Around the Lake Kussharo, Horse Trekking and canoe tours around the Lake Shikotsu and Kushiro River are held by some acticiity companies. In addition, a swan boat is rented at the Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip (砂湯レストハウス レタラチップ), and a fishing boat is rented to enjoy fishing at Wakoto Resthouse (和琴レストハウス). Besides, Lamp-no-Yado Moritsubetu (ランプの宿 森つべつ) holds a sea of clouds tour and a starry sky tour in the Tsubetsu Pass Observation Tower.
