[Asari Head Office in Hakodate] Sukiyaki Lunch Can Be Savored at Private Room with Elegant and Tasteful
June 23rd, 2017
Asari Head Office (阿さ利本店) is an old-established meat shop founded in 1901 at the foot of Mt. Hakodate (函館山) in Horai-cho, Hakodate city, and Mr. Masako Dobashi (土橋 正子) is a proprietress now. It got the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition and 2017 Special Edition, and originates from a building facing Asarizaka slope (あさり坂). The building looks a historical building, and is very shibui. The meat shop is on the 1st floor, and is a sukiyaki restraunt on the 2nd floor. They use Head Office, so I guess that they have some branches, but the sukiyaki restraunt is only here.
The sukiyaki restraunt has all tables at private rooms, and visitors can enjoy the private space. In additon, the private rooms have an atmosphere of Meiji period (明治時代) or Taisho period (大正時代), and matches politicians and presidents. They seem to offer meals to clients in Japan. At lunchtime, the restraunt is crowded, so you should have phoned ahead, and reserved a table. But except around 12:00, you may be able to enter the sukiyaki restraunt without reserving on weekdays. I made a reservation beforehand and visited here around 11:30 on a weekday.

Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. Hakodate has a lot of slope lands, and the Hakodate has a lot of narrow roads. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard. Article is here
A waitress showed me the room. I sat on a Japanese cushion and read a menu. Lunch menu (11:00-13:00) had A Set Lunch and B Set Lunch, and each prices were JPY 1400 and JPY 1600. The difference between the A SET Lunch and the B Set Lunch is a specialty croquette. Except the Lunch menus, an ordinary sukiyaki menu can be savored. But I visited here for lunchtime, and ordered the B Set Lunch. She said "You can order an extra portion of beef (400g) at an extra cost of JPY 400", so I ordered it, too. The sum total was JPY 2000. Contents of the B Set Lunch were a plate of Beef Sukiyaki, a bolw of Rice, a bowl of Miso Soup, a dish of Pickles, a dish of the Croquette and Thinly Shredded Cabbage, and a dish of Sherbet. If cutomers press a buzzer, they can make a payment after meals.
About 10 minutes later, the waitress served the B Set Lunch. It smelled good in the air. She said "The sherbet is served if you press the buzzer after meals". All waitress had good smiles and nice atomosphere like a maidservanta woman servant (女中). They have a history, so it is just my personal opinion, but I think they take care of their hospitality.
I whisked an egg with chopsticks immedeately, and dipped a sliced beef into the whisked egg, and ate it. It was very tasty! Of course, the beef was high quality, but sukiyaki sauce was very good, too. Not too sweet and not too salty, and it was right taste. Then I ate the specialty croquette. Fresh-fried mashed potato was good. As for the sukiyaki, I ate onion, green onion, firm tofu and noodles made from devil's tongue starch at a pot. The sukiyaki sauce soaked into the noodles made from devil's tongue starch very well. That was good, too. I want to eat the ordinary sukiyaki menu next time.
