Mitsuboshi Shokudo

Mitsuboshi Shokudo (三星食堂) is a long-established restraunt founded in 1914 in Nayoro city located in the north part of Asahikawa city, and is near Nayoro Station. Mr. Kouzo Takeda (武田 宏三) is a restraunt owner now. The restraunt is known for a wide variety dishes on a menu, and is loved by Nayoro people. Special Mayonnaise Grilled Chicken with Teriyaki Sauce Set Meal (鳥の照焼特製マヨネーズ炒定食) and Nayoro Stewed Mongolian Barbecue Set Meal (なよろ煮込みジンギスカン) are popular, and the Mitsuboshi Shokudo is crowded with customers at lunchtime in particular. A lot of familiar restraunts such as the Restaurant Midoriya (レストラン緑) that local people often went to eat a dish used to be near the Nayoro Station in old days, but many restraunts has already closed their business. I think that the Mitsuboshi Shokudo keep doing their business.

I visited here around 14:00 on a weekday. A building seems to be renewed because it was not the building I knew. I supposed that the building was larger than the old building. An atmosphere of the restraunt was not long-established restraunt, and I guessed that it was a modern restraunt, and the building had a cleanliness. When I entered the building, 6 groups of customers enjoyed their meals at the restraunt. I guessed that they looked half the number of local people and half the number of tourists, and the restraunt was popular after all. All the seats are table seats, and raised tables are provided, too, so I suppose that family customers also enjoy meals.

Nayoro city is located in the northerneastern part of Asahikawa city, and 6 million sunflowers such as Harurinzo and cobalt in total are planted in some fields of about 50 ha in the whole Naoyoro. Those are in full bloom from late July to mid August. It all started when the sunflowers were planted in Chiebun region in 1897, and those were seen here and there. In the sunflower fields, 3 large sunflower fields, MOA Nayoro Farm Kousei Venue (MOA名寄農場更生会場), MOA Nayoro Farm Shinonome Venue (MOA名寄農場東雲会場) and Sun Pillar Park Venue (サンピラーパーク会場) are open to the public. Those were shooting places for Japanese movie "Stargazing Dog (星守る犬)" that Mr. Toshiyuki Nishida (西田敏行) played the leading character in 2011, and have became popular tourist attractions. Mongolian Barbecue of Hokkaido

Genghis Khan (ジンギスカン * Mongolian barbecue) is one of the most famous local dishes of Hokkaido, and is a dish to grill sheep meats and vegetables, and is called the comfort food of Hokkaido people. Except the Hokkaido, the Genghis Khan is also a familiar local dish in a part of Iwate Prefecture or Nagano Prefecture. The reason why the Hokkaido is closely related to the mongolian barbecue is that 5 national sheep breeding ranches were built in Takikawa (滝川), Tsukisamu (月寒), Tomobe (友部) in Ibaraki Prefecture, Hojo (北条) in Ehime Prefecture and Kumamoto (熊本) after Japanese goverment declared a production increase of wool in Meiji period. In those days, Japanese had no custom of eating meat, and did not like the taste since the sheep meats had unique taste. But the Genghis Khan is one of devised dishes for using the sheep meats as well as the wool without being wasted. Indeed, the sheep meats are different from beef and pork, and have the unique taste, so it has people divided between those that like it and those that hate it. On the contrary, the unique taste may captivate the Hokkaido people's taste buds. Article is here

The Stewed Mongolian Barbecue is a stewed dish mixed lamb and vegetables with barbecue sauce, and the sauce is more than Takikawa style mongolian barbecue. Nayoro people often eat it at their homes. I am from the Nayoro, so often eat it at my home. First barbecue sauce is pooled in a pot, then vegetables, lamb and Udon noodles (or Ramen noodles) are stewed in the pot. A rice cake that is a local speciality in the Nayoro is seemed to put in the pod recently. Broth of vegetables and lamb are used fully, so it looks good for our body.

About 10 minutes later, the set meal including a dish of the Stewed Mongolian Barbecue, a bowl of rice, a bowl of miso soup and 2 plates of pickled vegetables was served. As for the Stewed Mongolian Barbecue, lamb, sprouts and onions produced in Nayoro, leeks were used, and salty-sweet taste was salted just right. The vegetables were light crunchy texture, so those were tasty. I like eating the rice mixed with the barbecue sauce.
