Soup Curry of Hokkaido
Soup curry (スープカレー) is a dish to eat rice into soup using various spices with vegetables and meats. Only curry and rice was once a curry dish in Japan, but the soup curry has become popular for these 20 years. Ajanta (アジャンタ) and Magic Spice (マジックスパイス) in Sapporo sparked the soup curry boom, and it is said that the origin of the soup curry is medicinal cooking curry (薬膳カリィ) cooked by Mr. Muneo Tatsujiri (辰尻 宗男), ex-restraunt owner of the Ajanta, and a new genre of a curry dish has been established. After that, Mr. Taizan Shimomura (下村 泰山), a restraunt owner of the Magic Spice, named the curry dish as the soup curry, and it has widely spread.
The soup curry has already spread out all over the Japan, but culture of the soup curry born in the Sapporo is rooted, and more than 250 soup curry restaurants open a business in the Sapporo. Therefore the soup curry is called the comfort food of the Sapporo. The process spreads not only in the Sapporo but also in the various places of the Hokkaido, so a lot of famous soup curry restraunts are born in the Hokkaido. Curry Zion (カリーザイオン) in Rumoi was given the Bib Gourmand by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition. Besides, Curry Shokudo Kokoro (カレー食堂 心) in the Sapporo, PICANTE (ピカンティ) in the Sapporo, Soup Curry Bem Bera Network Company (スープカリィ ベンベラ ネットワークカンパニー) in the Sapporo, Soup Curry Dominica (スープカレー ドミニカ) in the Sapporo, Medicine Man (メディスンマン) in the Sapporo and Furanoya (ふらのや) in Furano were given the Michelin Plate by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition.
Except above soup curry restaurants, Ichimonji Curry Shop (一文字カリー店), Tiger Curry (タイガーカレー), Yellow (イエロー), Chaos Heaven (カオスヘブン), RED CHILI (レッドチリ), SOUP CURRY KING, Murakami Curry Shop PULU2 (村上カレー店 プルプル), Kitaro (木多郎), Suage Plus (スアゲ プラス), Coffee House (こうひいはうす), Gomarudo (五○堂), Spice Pot (スパイス ポット), Curry Ya! Cong (カリーヤ！コング), Hige Danshaku (ひげ男爵), gop-no-Anagura (gopのアナグラ) and so on are popular in particular.
Generally, the curry and rice is eaten to poured curry sauce into the rice, but the soup curry is eaten to put the rice into the soup. Though those curry dishes are different, please eat the curry dishes as you like. A way of ordering is different depending on soup curry restaurants, but a common way of order is as follows. (1) Customers should choose a type of soup curry from menu. (2) Customers should choose a type of hotness. (3) Customers should choose a types of a quantity of rice. Except those, Choice of the soup and additional toppings are possible depending on the restraunts. In addition, a lemon is attached to the rice. Because I feel that the soup curry is more tasty if I squeeze this to the rice, it is vey amazing!

Curry Zion (カリーザイオン) is a popular soup curry restraunt founded in 2004 in Hanazono-cho, Rumoi city located in the northwestern part of Asahikawa city. Mr. Motoharu Tanaka (田中 元治) is a restraunt owner. The restaurant was given the Bib Gourmand by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition. I heard that the Curry Zion is the only soup curry restraunt given the Bib Gourmand in Hokkaido. That is amazing! Article is here
Kaizoku (海ぞく) is a popular soup curry restraunt founded in about 2013 in Kurokawa-cho, Yoichi town located in the root of Shiretoko Penninsula, and is near Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (ニッカウヰスキー余市蒸溜所), Yoichi Space Museum “Space Dome” (余市宇宙記念館スペース童夢) and Roadside Station Space Apple Yoichi (道の駅スペース・アップルよいち). The Kaizoku means “A pirate” in English. The Kurokawa-cho is an entertainment district of the Yoichi town, and a building is built around bars and Japanese‐style baran izakaya (居酒屋). Mr. Satoru Tanaka (田中 悟) is a restraunt owner. He is a younger brother of the restraunt owner of Coffee House (こうひいはうす), a famous soup curry restraunt in Sapporo. Soul Store (ソウルストア) is a popular soup curry restraunt founded in 2008 in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and is across a road from Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art (北海道立近代美術館). Mr. Genta Shimizu (清水 元太) is a restraunt owner. The ivy-covered appearance of a building is retro and stylish. Article is here
PICANTE (ピカンティ) is a popular soup curry restraunt founded in 2000 in Kita ward, Sapporo city, and is near Kita 13-Jo Gate that is famous for Lined Gingko Trees in Hokkaido University. The restraunt is popular with Hokkaido University students, and was given the Michelin Plate by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition. Mr. Osamu Sudo (須藤修) is a restraunt owner. By the way, the PICANTE means “Spicy hot” in Portuguese. Originally, the PICANTE used to be a restraunt called VOYAGE founded in 1996. Medicine Man (メディスンマン) is a popular soup curry restaurant founded in 2001 in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and is relatively near Nakajima Park (中島公園). The restaurant was given the Michelin Plate by MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2017 Special Edition. The Medicine Man means a Native American witch doctor. Asian Bar RAMAI (ラマイ) is an Indonesian soup curry restaurant founded in 2003, and is run by Ramai Corp. Mr. Shimon Kawada (河田志門) is a company president. Their head office is in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo city, and branch restaurants open a business in the Sapporo, Asahikawa, Otaru, Chitose, Tomakomai, Hakodate, Yokohama and Osaka. My friend told me that the soup curry of the RAMAI was tasty, so I visited Sapporo Central Branch (札幌中央店) this time. The restaurant facing Tsukisamu Street (月寒通) is relatively near Susukino, and is so large, and 112 tables are provided at the restaurant. It is said that it is the largest soup curry restaurant in Japan. The restaurant is a little dark, and has an Indonesian atmosphere by interior decoration and furniture. All seats are a half private room with table seats, so I guess that family customers also enjoy meals. Article is here
Coffee House (こうひいはうす) is a long-established soup curry restraunt founded in 1977 in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and faces a streetcar track, and is near streetcar station Ropeway-Iriguchi stop at the foot of Mt. Moiwayama. Mr. Makoto Tanaka (田中 誠) is a restraunt owner. As its name suggests, the restraunt is also well-known for serving tasty coffee, and the interior decoration is like a cafe bar. A record player that gives the impression that it might start sounding at any moment. The restraunt is not large, but counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that family customers also enjoy meals. Article is here
Suage Plus (すあげプラス) is a popular soup curry restraunt founded in 2007 in Sapporo city, and the head office open a business in Susukino, Chuo ward. Suage corp runs it, and Mr. Kyoji Saito (齋藤 京司) is a company president. They have some branch restraunts in the Sapporo, and other company also open a business as the Suage in Tokyo. My visited restraunt is the head office. A building is at a back street of National Route 36, and nORBESA with a ferris wheel is a mark. Because large letters “Suage” are written on a wall, the building is easy to find. The restraunt is large, and counter seats and table seats are provided, and there are a lot of tables, so I guess that family customers and a large number of visitors also enjoy their meals. Okushiba Shouten is a popular soup curry restaurant founded in 2004 in Sapporo city, and is well-known for soup curry using prawn broth. NEXT LEVEL corp runs it, and Mr. Yosuke Okushiba (奥芝 洋介) is a company president. Branch restaurants open a business in the Sapporo, Chitose, Asahikawa and Memanbetsu Airport, and their friends also open a business with using the same business name. Tenjiku Jr. (天竺Jr.) is a soup curry restraunt founded in 2012 in Higashi ward, Sapporo city, and is a franchise shop of famous soup curry restraunt “Tenjiku (天竺)”. Thier building is near Sapporo Station and Sapporo Center Post Office. They serve south India soup curry, and rich hotness is highlight, and 23 types of spices are used. I heard that customers expect an appetite increase and blood circulation promotion. The soup is made from kombu, vegetables, fruits and a chicken. Rice is turmeric rice with staple grains rice.
