Ski Jumping Is One of Representative Winter Sports in Hokkaido
January 17th, 2015
Ski Jumping is a sport that ski jumpers compete with a flying distance and a beauty flying posture after they ski down and jump from a jumping hill. They have to ski down and jump a slant of 35 degrees at speed of 80 - 100 km per an hour and have to jump far more than other ski jumpers and have to land in a telemark pose finally. 5 umpires judge their flying pose and give a score. It adds up the score of their flying distance and the score of the landing and the posture, and they compete for the victory.

It is said that the ski jumping was born in Norway in 1808. Winter Olympic Game and World Cup are held, it is one of the representative winter sports. There are 5 jumping hills, Okurayama Ski Jumping Hill, Miyanomori Ski Jumping Hill, Nayoro Piyashiri Jumping Hill, Araiyama Jumping Hill and Asahi Sanbodai Jumping Hill, in Hokkaido. I visited the Okurayama Ski Jumping Hill.
Packers tread snow down with their skis on a steep slope to the jumping hill before the jumpers fly. Meanwhile, they arranged bamboo grasses used for lines and make the lines with a spray. Because I wondered at using the bamboo grass, I asked an old man nearby, he replied me that the ski jumping in Europe used the bamboo grass for lines. Afterwards, test jumpers took off and they confirmed a condition of the jumping hill. Finally the jumper took off. Because it was not broadcasted the process of the ski jumping on TV, I knew it only after I watched it live. I knew that many stagehands supported the ski jumping.
