Yagishiri Island (焼尻島) that about 200 people live is a small island, and the circumference of the island is 10.6 km. The Yagishiri means "An island near the land" or "An island landing fishes" in Ainu language. About 8,000 tourists come to the island. Speaking of the Yagishiri, sheep and Onko Forest (オンコの森) are famous. A scenery of sheep ranch in the central part of the island and going around virgin forest in the eastern part of the island are main sightseeing. 50 types of about 150,000 virgin trees designated as a natural monument grow naturally. Wild birds can be watched, too. Takanosu-enchi Observation Deck (鷹の巣園地), the Sheep Ranch, Onko-no-Sho tree (オンコの荘) are famous tourist attractions. Yagishiri Ferry Port is built in the northern part of the island, and most of local people live between the northern part and the estern part. There are accommodations such as ryokan between the northern part and the eastern part, too.

In addition, Hibarigaoka Park (雲雀ヶ丘公園), Yagishiri Hometown Museum (焼尻郷土館) and Shirahama Camping Ground (白浜露営場) are also in the island. By the way, 3 restaurants, Ninuma Shokudo (新沼食堂), Shimakko Shokudo (島っ子食堂), Yamasa Shokudo (ヤマサ食堂), and a cafe, Cafe Atlier Okumura (カフェ アトリエ おくむら), open a business for a limited season, and 4 accommodations are built in the island. Pré Salé Yagishiri can be eaten only at the Shimakko Shokudo. Unfortunately, hot springs do not gush out in the island. The Haboro Onsen Sunset Plaza has onsen in Haboro town, Hokkaido mainland, so tourists can enjoy the onsen, too. The Yagishiri has some events. Teuri Yagishiri Sheep Festival (焼尻めん羊まつり) is held between 2days in early August, and Treasure Island "Treasure Legend of Brother Islands" (宝島「兄弟島の財宝伝説」) is held from mid July to late August.
A sightseeing reachs its peak from July to August. Means of transportation to the Yagishiri Island are a ferry and a high‐speed craft. Those services run between the Yagishiri Port and the Haboro Port or the Teuri Port. There are some means of transportation for the island tourism, for example, a sightseeing hire or a rental bicycle. I rend the bicycle, and it took about 2 hours to go around the Yagishiri Island by the rental bicycle. Walkers can go around for about 4 hours on foot. Be careful not to be late for the ferry.
List of Nature and Tourist Attractions
It is said that a scenery of Yagishiri Island looks like Scotland. A combination of a shoreline, the Teuri Island and the Hokkaido mainland is beautiful. The Takanosu-enchi Observation Deck is in the western part of the island, and the Sheep Ranch is in the central part of the island, and the Shirahama Camping Ground is in the sothern part of the island, and the Onko Forest, the Onko-no-sho Tree and Yagishiri Hometown Museum are in the eastern part of the island.
Onko Forest (オンコの森) is a virgin forest in the eastern part of Yagishiri Island (焼尻島). The Onko means "Japanese yew" in Hokkaido dialect. About 50,000 Japanese yews grow naturally, and those have been designated a natural monument in Japan. Except the Japanese yews, 50 types of coniferous trees and broadleaf trees with over 200 years old such as Japanese oak, scarlet-tinged ivy, Amur cork tree, Japanese linden, magnolia, Japanese rowan and Japanese alder also grow naturally in the forest. A cycling road and walks are built in the forest, and there are graveyard for 2 feudal retainers of Aizu Clan (会津藩士の墓), strangely shaped trees (奇木), Hibarigaoka Park (雲雀ヶ丘公園), Uguisu-dani Valley (うぐいす谷) and Onko-no-Sho Tree (オンコの荘) along the cycling road and the walks. In addition, the forest is adjacent to a sheep ranch. A good typical scenery of the Hokkaido comes into the sight if visitors come out of the forest. Admission free. Read More
Onko-no-Sho Tree (オンコの荘) is an old tree along a walk path between Uguisudani Vallay (ウグイス谷) and Shirahama Camping Ground (白浜キャンプ場) in the southern part of Yagishiri Island (焼尻島), and is a part of Onko Forest (オンコの森). The Sho (荘) means "A building" in English, for exaple, it is used as a villa (別荘). When I visited here, Marguerite was the best season, and it was full in bloom along the walk path. That was a beautiful view. In addition, a combination of the sea and a sheep ranch is a superb scenery from here. Admission free. Read More
Sheep Ranch (めん羊牧場) is a ranch run by Hoshu Farm (萌州ファーム) in the center part of Yagishiri Island (焼尻島), and they raise about 500 suffolk sheep at the grassland of about 80 ha. Those meat are well-known as "Pré Salé Yagishiri (プレ・サレ焼尻)", one of expensive mutton in Japan, and it has a good reputation. The grassland spreads over along Onko Sea Road (オンコ海道), and it is said that the scenery looks like Scottland. I feel a foreign atmosphere indeed, and I think that the scenery is a typical scenery of Hokkaido, too. By the way, outlanders are prohibited from entering the grassland, so visitors should enjoy views along the Onko Sea Road. Read More
Takanosu-enchi Observation Deck
Takanosu-enchi Observation Deck (鷹の巣園地) is a lookout point on a small hill in the western part of Yagishiri Island (焼尻島), and is the highest place of around 100 m elevation in the Yagishiri Island. Visitors can enjoy 360 degree panorama such as Teuri Island (天売島), Hokkaido mainland and the sea. Even though this place is very low, I suppose that a superior view may be rare. By the way, there are 3 roads to this place, and the slope of a road called "Onnko Sea Road (オンコ海道)" through sheep ranches is relatively gentle, so it is easier than other roads. An observation deck, a parking lot, a public restroom and a gazebo are built at the site. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Read More
Shirahama Camping Ground
Shirahama Camping Ground (白浜露営場) is built in the southern part of the island, and faces the Shirahama Coast (白浜海岸). Visitors can view beautiful views such as the shoreline or the Sheep Ranch. It is said that Mr. Ranald MacDonald (ラナルド・マクドナルド), the first English teacher in Japan, landed here. It seems that totem poles were built as a landing monument actually, but there were not the totem poles when I visited here. A public restroom and a common kichen are built at the site. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.

List of Tasty Foods
The Yagishiri is surrounded by the sea, so everyone knows that seafood is tasty. Besides the seafood, the Pré Salé Yagishiri is a noted product. That is an expensive ingredient, so ordinary people rarely eat it. In addition, a conbination of a sea urchin (うに) and a rice bowl (おにぎり) seems to be served in the island. That name is Unigiri (うにぎり).
Shimakko Shokudo (島っ子食堂) is a restraunt adjacent to Yagishiri ferry terminal and open a business from mid June to September. It is known as a restraunt that serve local specialty high-quality Suffolk meat "Pré Salé Yagishiri (プレ・サレ焼尻)". Pré Salé Yagishiri is very rare meat, and visitors can eat the mutton at MIKUNI SAPPORO (ミクニサッポロ), Restaurant Moliere (モリエール) and Hokkaido Beer Garden (北海道ビール園) in Hokkaido and at Ginza Totoki (ギンザ トトキ) and Restraunt Quintessence (レストラン カンテサンス) in Tokyo. The visitors can eat the Yagishiri mutton in only Shimakko Shokudo restraunt. In Yagishiri island, the visitors can eat Pré Salé Yagishiri only at Shimakko Shokudo. This mutton is used cooking ingredients mainly at celebrity French restaurants evaluated by Michelin. It is amazing! Read More
