Shirogane Onsen
Shirogane Onsen (白金温泉) is a popular hot-spring resort in Biei town located in the southern direction of Asahikawa city. Three-hundred thousand people visit here every year. It is a base for sightseeing in the western part of the Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園), and there are trailheads of Tokachidake Mountain Range including Mt. Tokachidake, Mt. Oputashike, Mt. Bieidake and Mt. Furanodake, near the Shirogane Onsen, so a lot of climbers as well as bathers come, too. There are 5 accommodations in a white birch forest, some trail pathes are built around those, too, and the tourists can enjoy great outdoors of Daisetsuzan. In addition, there are Shirogane Tourist information Center (白金観光センター案内所), Rindo Shokudo (林道食堂), Nagai Souvenir Shop (永井商店), Taisetsu Youth Recreation Hall (大雪青年交流の家) and Shirogane Campsite (国設白金野営場), too. By the way, the Shirogane Onsen is not so large, convenience stores are not built.

Daisetsuzan National Park
Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the center of Hokkaido is the largest national park in Japan, the size of 226,764 ha, and has been designed as the national park since 1934, and is the oldest national park in the Hokkaido along with Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園). A mountain named Daisetsuzan does not exist, and the whole area including the mountains with over 2,000 m above sea level such as Mt. Asahidake (旭岳), the highest mountain in Hokkaido, Mt. Kurodake (黒岳), Mt. Aibestudake (愛別岳), Mt. Tomuraushi (トムラウシ山) is collectively called "Daisetsuzan", and those are called "A roof of the Hokkaido" ,too. Rare nature such as active volcanoes, Lare Columnar joints, a sea of trees and permafrost even in the Hokkaido can be seen. About 250 types of alpine plants grow naturally, and various forms of life such as brown bear, blakiston's fish owl, dolly varden and pine grosbeak inhabit here. By the way, A right notation is "Daisetsuzan", but local people often call "Taisetsuzan". Read More

It is said that the Shirogane Onsen originated in Hatakeyama Onsen (畠山温泉) that was destroyed completely by mudflows and landslides when Mt. Tokachidake erupted in 1926. After that, Mr. Koukami Kakuichi (鴻上覚一) succeeded in drilling hot spring in 1950, and that provided a basis for developing the hot-spring resort. After a lot of difficulties were overcame, the hot springs at 48 C gashed out from 399 m underground. Because he said "the hot springs from the underground are very valuable thing like platinum. * The platinum means Hakkin (白金 * another reading is Shirogane) in Japanese", the hot-springs resort was named after that. It is surprising that the origin of the name is neither color of the hot springs or mined noble metals. The hot springs used to be called "Onsen without using a walking stick (杖忘れの湯 * After a person using the walking stick take a bath at the onsen, the person start to walk without the walking stick.)", and it is said that the hot springs seem to be effective for Neuralgia, Arteriosclerosis, Chronic skin diseases and Constipation.

There are Blue Pond (青い池) that is a representative of Hokkaido tourism, Shirahige Falls (白髭の滝), Bokyodai (望岳台) and Shirogane Fudo Falls (白金不動の滝) around the Shirogane Onsen, so a lot of tourists stay to visit those. Fresh green, hiking and mountain climbing can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, activities such as snowshoes, the Shirahige Falls lit up and the Blue Pond lit up can be enjoyed in a winter.

The parking lot is free of charge. The walks are rough, so you should wear comfortable shoes. Please drive slowly not to raise a thick cloud of dust on the parking lot. Shirahige Falls
Shirahige Falls (白ひげの滝) is a waterfall at about 600 m above sea level in Shirogane Onsen, Biei town located in the southeastern direction of Asahikawa city, and was named after splashes of the falls like the white mustache. It is the rare waterfall in Japan that underground water drops from cracks of rocks, and is one of famous falls together with Furepe Falls (乙女の滝) in Shiretoko Peninsula and Funbe Falls (フンベの滝) in Hiroo in Hokkaido. By the way, Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel (湯元白金温泉ホテル) is built on the falls. Admission free. As for a parking lot, visitors can park at Shirogane Tourist Information Center or a community parking lot. In the Shirogane Onsen, 2 free parking lots are provided at Shirogane Tourist information Center and in front of Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel (湯元白金温泉ホテル). By the way, nonstop buses do not run. But some nonstop buses for hotel guests seem to run between Asahikawa and the Shirogane Onsen.

Express Bus "Furano-go" (高速ふらの号) runs between Sapporo and the Furano, and Express Bus "Lavender-go" (ラベンダー号) runs between Asahikawa and the Furano. In addition, North Liner, an express bus, is in service between the Asahikawa and Obihiro, and stop in the Furano or Biei, too, so people can move more rapidly than common transportation facilities. In the Furano and Biei, some rent-a-car companies open a business, so tourists can drive a rental car.

List of Day Trip Onsen
Tourists can take a day trip bath at Taisestuzan Shirogane Kanko Hotel (大雪山白金観光ホテル), Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel (湯元白金温泉ホテル), Biei-Shirogane Shiki-no-Mori Hotel Park Hills (ホテルパークヒルズ), Shirogane Onsenkyo Mori-no-Ryotei Biei (森の旅亭びえい), Biei Recreation Center (国民保養センター) and Biei Guesthouse Shirogane-no-Yu (美瑛ゲストハウス 白金の湯).

Shirogane Onsenkyo Mori-no-Ryotei Biei
Mori-no-Ryotei Biei is a small-sized onsen ryokan opened a business in 2010, and is a little far away from the central of the Toyako Onsen. Hokkaido Sanchi Chokuso Center (株式会社 北海道産地直送センター) runs it. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 800. A staying is possible, too, and the ryokan is popular for high-class. A building with a warmth of woods has a very stylish atmosphere. Dishes seem to be delicious, and day trip bathers are allowed to eat a lunch. Restraunt Shokujidokoro "Mori-no-Bou" opens a business from 11:00 to 14:00. Monday is regular closing day.

A large public bathhouse on the 1st floor is not so large, but it has new bathhouse with cleanliness. There are 1 outdoor bath, 1 outdoor pot bath, 2 indoor baths, 1 cold bath and 1 sauna at the bathhouse.

One of the indoor baths is the size that about 6 people can take a bath, and uses 100% natural hot springs. The others use the hot spring with adding water or adding heat depending on seasons. Another indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath.

The outdoor bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 4 people can take a bath. A sense of openness can not be felt, and a view is not good because the outdoor bath is surrounded by walls. But bathers enjoy hot springs during forest bathing because a forest is close to the outdoor bath. The outdoor pot bath is the size that 1 person can take a bath. I felt comfortable when the hot springs were overflowed by me.

The hot springs are sodium and magnesium and calcium sulfate chloride spring, and are opaque and light green and have salty taste and a litle metallic taste smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 5.329 g/kg. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom and free hair dryers are installed at a dressing room.

Biei Guesthouse Shirogane-no-Yu
Biei Guesthouse Shirogane-no-Yu is a small-sized guest house without meals, and has been founded since 2017, and is a little far away from the center of the Shirogane Onsen. A building of Ginei-so (銀瑛荘) shutted down in 2014 was renewed. A lot of visitors appreciate high quality fresh hot springs. But a building was made more than 40 years ago, so people liking new facilities may not suit it. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. A staying for cheap price is possible, too. A coin-operated washing machine seems to be provided, too. I visited the Ginei-so. The following is an article before the Ginei-so close a business.

There are 1 indoor bath and 1 outdoor bath at a small public bathroom. The indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath. A bathtub and the bathroom floor change reddish brown by hot spring ingredients because hot springs always overflow from the bath. The hot springs have a smooth and slippery touch.

The outdoor bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 5 people can take a bath. Because the outdoor bath is surrounded by walls and has a roof, Unfortunately, a sense of openness can not be felt. You can look over the Mori-no-Ryotei Biei if you rise from the outdoor bath. The indoor bath is hotter than the outdoor bath, so the outdoor bath suits taking a long bath.
