[Shikotsu-Toya National Park] Many Tourist Attractions and Onsen Can Be Enjoyed
I introduce about the Yoteizan Area and the Toyako Area on the first page, and introduce about the Noboribetsu Area, the Shikotsuko Area and the Jozankei Area on the second page.

Noboribetsu Onsen that is famous for Hell Valley (地獄谷) and Lake Kuttara (倶多楽湖) with clear lake water are in the southern direction of Mt. Orofure (オロフレ山). In addition, there are Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉), Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen (登別カルルス温泉) and Kawamata Onsen (川又温泉), too. My visited places are as follows.
Orofure Pass Observatory
Orofure Pass (オロフレ峠) is a pass along Hokkaido Road 2 with a lot of sharp turns on Mt. Orofure with about 1230 m in height between Noboribetsu city and Sobetsu town, and Orofure Parking Lot Park (オロフレ駐車公園), Orofure Pass Lookout (オロフレ峠展望台) and a public restroom are at the Orofure Pass. The Orofure Pass Lookout is famous for seeing a conbination of Pacific Ocean and mountains. There is a trailhead to Mt. Orofure, so a lot of hikers come, too. The Hokkaido Road 2 is closed in the evening (17:00-09:00) from late November to late April. A view from Okei Parking Lot (黄渓駐車場) along the Hokkaido Road 2 is comforatable, too. Around Jigokudani Tour and Fall Foliage
Jigokudani (地獄谷 * Hell Valley) is an explosion crater in Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) located in the western direction of Lake Kuttara (倶多楽湖), and was born by eruptions of Mt. Kasa (笠山) 10,000 years ago. A lot of hot spring gushing out points and fumaroles are on the explosion crater of about 11 ha. Wasteland without trees and grass has been some hot spring rivers and volcano smoke, and it was associated with a Buddhism hell that demons live in by people in old times, so here was named "Jigokudani". It is well-known as a synonym for the Noboribetsu Onsen, and around the Jigokudani is famous for a scenic spot to see autumn leaves. Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼) and Mt. Hiyori (日和山), River Oyunuma Natural Footbath (大湯沼川足湯), 6 pathways such as Jigokudani Pathway (地獄谷遊歩道), Oyunuma Pathway (大湯沼遊歩道), Oyunuma 2nd Pathway (大湯沼第2遊歩道), Oyunuma Scenic Pathway (大湯沼川探勝歩道), Funamiyama Pathway (船見山遊歩道) and Funamiyama 2nd Pathway (船見山第2遊歩道) have the fall foliage in an autumn. A combination of sulfurous odour and fall foliage can be enjoyed. The best time to see is from mid October to late October. Admission free. A parking lot is chraged. * If visitors pay a parking fee, they can park their cars on Jigokudani Parking Lot (地獄谷の駐車場) and Oyunuma Parking Lot (大湯沼の駐車場). Read More
Lake Kuttara (倶多楽湖) is a circular caldera lake in Shiraoi town, and was born by volcanic activity 80,000 years ago. A road leads to the lake only from Noboribetsu not the Shiraoi, and it is nearby Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉). In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the perimeter of the lake is about 8 km, and the maximum depth is 148 m. The transparency of the lake is very high because the lake as well as Lake Mashu (摩周湖) does not has a river at all. After the Lake Mashu, the lake water has the 2nd transparency in Japan. A Ministry of the Environment reported 2001 Measurement Results of Water Quality in Public Waters (2001年度公共用水域水質測定結果), and the Lake Kuttara won 1st place in lake and pond section. In addition, the lake is the roundest lake in the Japan. Because the development is limited, a primeval forest of Hokkaido is still abound relatively. The lake can be seen from the Lake Kuttara Lakeside and Ogigata Lookout (扇型展望台) along Hokkaido Road 350. But The Hokkaido Road 350 is closed from late November to late April. Read More
Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) is a famous hot-spring resort in Noboribetsu city located in the northeastern direction of Muroran city, and is one of the 3 major hot spring resorts in Hokkaido together with Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) and Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉). Hot springs spring 10000 liters everyday, so a quantity of the hot springs is abundant, too. About 3 million tourists come every year. Noboribetsu Onsen is one of major hot-spring resort that around 14 accommodations open in Hokkaido. Except the hot springs, there are abundant sightseeing spots such as Jigokudani (地獄谷 * Hell valley), Noboribetsu Bear Ranch (のぼりべつクマ牧場) and Lake Kuttara (倶多楽湖), too. There are a footbath, restaurants, cafes, bars with a surcharge, souvenir shops and Noboribetsu Gateway Center (登別ゲートウェイセンター) sponsoring activities at the hot-spring resort. Onsen Ichiba (温泉市場) and Jigoku Ramen of Aji-no-Daio Nobotibetsu Onsen Branch (味の大王 登別温泉店の地獄ラーメン) are popular in particular. In addition, a huge ogre with 18 m in height stands at an entrance of the hot-spring resort and he greets us. A mascot of Noboribetsu Onsen is the ogre. The ogres can be seen here and there. Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉) is a hot spring place in Noboribetsu city located in the northeastern direction of Muroran city. Shinnoboribetsu Onsen-so (新登別温泉荘) and Ryokan Shiki (旅館四季) are built along Hokkaido Road 2, and Renlal Vila Yuga (大型貸別荘 優雅) is a little away from there. The distance is around 3 km away from Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉), and is around 10 km away from the center of the Noboribetsu. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Kyoan (京庵) that is famous for tasty buckwheat noodles used to be near here, but it closed a business. The Shinnoboribetsu Onsen-so and the Ryokan Shiki were well-known for onsen ryokan that was run by brothers from Osaka. Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen
Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen (登別カルルス温泉) is a hot spring place at about 350 m above sea level in the most remote of Noboribetsu city, and is close to Noboribetsu Onsen, most famous onsen in Hokkaido, in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. There are Suzuki Ryokan (鈴木旅館), Orofure-so (オロフレ荘) and Sanseikan (山静館) along Noboribetsu river, and Hotel Iwai (ホテル岩井) is built on a small hill. There are Orofure Pass (オロフレ峠), Sunlaiva Ski Resort (サンバイラスキー場), Karurusu Sportsland (カルルスサンスポーツランド), Lake Tachibana (橘湖) and Keifuen Park (渓楓園) around the Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Speaking of the Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen, BATHCLIN bathing powder is famous. Kawamata Onsen (川又温泉) is a hot spring place in Noboribetsu city located in the northeastern direction of Muroran city, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 240 m above sea level in mountains. Brown bears may inhabit in forests. The distance is around 16 km far away from the center of the Horobetsu, so there is nothing around here. But Horobetsu Dam (幌別ダム) and Kawakami Nature Park are relatively near here. Speaking of the Noboribetsu, Onsen such as Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉), Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉) and Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen (カルルス温泉) are famous. In addition, famous tourist attractions are Jigokudani (地獄谷), Noboribetsu Bear Ranch (のぼりべつ熊牧場), Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura (登別伊達時代村) and Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe (登別マリンパークニクス). Soba-no-Sato Kyoan (そばの里京庵) is a popular buckwheat noodles restaurant in Kaminoboribetsu-cho, Noboribetsu city. There is a solitary house near Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉). There are few buildings around the house, you will be surprised at the buckwheat noodles restaurant in such a place. The interior decoration has an atmosphere such as our home. I took off my shoes and entered here as if I visited my friend's house. By the way, visitors with children who are lower than a primary schoolchild may not enter here. There are Mt. Monbetsudake (紋別岳), Mt. Fuppushidake (風不死岳), Mt. Eniwadake (恵庭岳) and Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) around Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖), the 2nd largest caldera lake. Shikotsuko Onsen (支笏湖温泉) and Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉) are around there, too. In addition, the Shikotsuko Area has Moss Cave (苔の洞門), Moss Corridor (苔の回廊) and Tarumae Garo Gorge (樽前ガロー), and beautiful moss can be enjoyed, too. My visited places are as follows.
Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) in Chitose city is the 2nd largest caldera lake after Lake Kussharo in Japan, and was born by large-scale eruptions 40,000 years ago. In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the perimeter of the lake is about 40 km, and the maximum depth is 360 m, and is the 2nd deepest lake after Lake Tazawa in Akita prefecture in Japan. It is said that the Lake Shikotsu is an unfrozen lake in the northernmost of Japan, but it sometimes is frozen actually. It is famous for clear water of the lake, too, and has transparency as well as Lake Mashu and Lake Baikal. Because the lake is close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo city and Tomakomai city, it is a popular tourist attraction that a lot of tourists visit. Around the Lake Shikotsu, there are Shikotsuko Onsen Resort (支笏湖温泉街), Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉), Former Poropinai Camping Ground (ポロピナイ元キャンプ場), Bifue Camping Ground (美笛キャンプ場), Okotan Camping Ground (オコタン野営場), Lake Okotanpe (オコタンペ湖), Morappu Camping Ground (モラップキャンプ場), Mt Eniwadake (恵庭岳), Mt. Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) is an active volcano at an altitude of 1,041 m in the northwestern part of Tomakomai city, and is well-known as a symbol of the Tomakomai. In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the mountain adjoins Mt. Fushidake in the southwestern part of Lake Shikotsu, and is one of 3 major mountain around the Lake Shikotsu together with the Mt. Fushidake and Mt. Eniwadake. Volcanic activity has begined since about 9,000 years ago, and a lave dome called Tarumae Lave Dome (樽前ドーム) was born on the mountaintop when it erupted in 1909. The lave dome has been designed as the Hokkaido Natural Monument since 1967 because of new lave dome. The mountain is well-known for a triple volcano together with Mt. Hakone and Mt. When the Mt. Tarumae erupted, ground was eroded by the lava and was weathered, and the shape turned into its shape like a corridor. About 30 types of moss grow thick on the surface of walls, so it was called Moss Cave. That is very mysterious.
Tarumae Garo Gorge
Tarumae Garo Gorge (樽前ガロー) is a gorge in the western part of Tomakomai city. Garo means "A river flows between steep cliffs" in Tohoku dialect. The cliff face of volcanic ash deposition erupted by Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) was eroded by snowmelt, and banks turned into the steep cliffs with about 5-6 m in height because of a flowing river. This place is one of few moss gorge with fantastic views together with Moss Cave (苔の洞門) and Moss Corridor (苔の回廊), and different atmospheres such as fresh green, fall foliage and snow scenery can be enjoyed depending on seasons. Shikotsuko Onsen (支笏湖温泉) is a hot-spring resort surrounded by forests and the lake in the east side of Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) located in the western part of Chitose city. It succeeded in drilling hot springs in 1974, and is close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Tomakomai, and 0.95 million people visit here annually. It features a few large buildings due to building restrictions. The hot-spring resort is not large, and there are 7 accommodations, a ferry port, Shikotsuko Visitor Center (支笏湖ビジターセンター), restaurants and souvenir shops. Sweets Shop Patissier Labo (スイーツショップ パティシエ・ラボ), Healthy Buffet Amamu (ヘルシービュッフェ アマム), Shokujidokoro Kotobuki (食事処 寿), Shikotsuko Daiichihotel Suizantei Taian (支笏湖第一寶亭留 翠山亭 苔庵) and azzurro (アズーロ) are popular in particular. Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉) is a hot spring place surrounded by forests and the lake at the foot of Mt. Eniwadake (恵庭岳) in the east side of Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) located in the western part of Chitose city, and is famous for easy access to a secret onsen close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Tomakomai. Chitose Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival (支笏湖氷濤まつり) is a snow event in Shikotsuko Onsen, Chitose city located in the southern direction of Sapporo city and is held from late January to mid February. Jozankei Area is in Sapporo city, the largest city in Hokkaido. It blows my mind why the national park is in a cosmopolitan city. There are Koganeyu Onsen (小金湯温泉), Lake Jozan (定山湖), Hoheikyo Onsen (豊平峡温泉) and Lake Sapporo (札幌湖) around Jozankei Onsen. Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場) is popular in a winter. In addition, a lot of mountains for hikers such as Mt. Muine (無意根山), Mt. Soranumadake (空沼岳), Mt. Sapporodake (札幌岳) and Mt. Hakkenzan (八剣山) are in the area, too. My visited places are as follows.
Hoheikyo Dam and Lake Jozan
Hoheikyo (豊平峡) is located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city and is farther than Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) from downtown. Though there is Lake Jozan in Sapporo city, it is located in Shikotsu Toya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園) and nature is very rich. There are Hoheikyo Onsen (豊平峡温泉), Nature Village and an auto camping ground near the Lake Jozan (定山湖). Furthermore, Onsen Shokudo's Indian curry (Onsen食堂のインドカレー) in Hoheikyo Onsen is popular. Jozankei Dam and Lake Sapporo
Jozankei Dam (定山渓ダム) is a a concrete gravity dam with about 117.5m in height in Jozankei located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and is near Jozankei Onsen. It was mainly built for the purposes of securing drinking water and electric power in 1989, and Lake Sapporo (さっぽろ湖), a man-made lake, was born. A canoe can be enjoyed on the surface of the lake, and Rainbow Trout (ニジマス), Whitespotted Char (アメマス) and Ito Fish (イトウ) are caught in a summer, and Japanese Pond Smelt (ワカサギ) is caught in a winter. Fall Foliage around Jozankei
Jozankei (定山渓) is famous for Onsen, and is known as a good place for fall foliage, too. Leaves of trees turn its color along Toyohira River (豊平川) located in the central of Jozankei Onsen, and Futami Park (二見公園), Futami Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge (二見吊橋), Tsukimi Bridge (月見橋), Jozankei-ohashi Bridge (定山渓大橋), Nishiki Bridge (錦橋) and Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝) are famous for the fall foliage. Sapporo International Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場), Jozankei Dam Karyuenchi (定山渓ダム下流園地), Lake Sapporo (さっぽろ湖) and Hoheikyo that are a little far away from the Jozankei Onsen are famous for the fall foliage, too. Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) is a famous hot-spring resort in Sapporo city suburbs, and one of the 3 major hot spring resorts in Hokkaido together with Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) and Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉). Jozankei is called a back room of Sapporo (札幌の奥座敷), and 2.4 million people per year visit the Jozankei Onsen that is near the center of Sapporo for about 60 minutes. Yawaragi-no-Sato Hoheikyo Onsen (やわらぎの里 豊平峡温泉) is a popular hot spring facility for day trip bath in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and won the first place in TripAdvisor "Day Trip Hot Spring Facility Category in 2013" in Japan. Hoheikyo is farther than Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) from downtown. There are Hoheikyo Dam (豊平峡ダム) saving water for Lake Jozan (定山湖), Shizen-no-Mura (自然の村 * nature village) with cottages and an auto camping ground near the Hoheikyo Onsen. Furthermore, Indian Curry of Onsen Shokudo (Onsen食堂のインドカレー) at a building of the Hoheikyo Onsen is famous, too, and a lot of people visit here only to eat the Indian Curry. Koganeyu Onsen (小金湯温泉) is a hot spring place in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and is only a little closer the center of the Sapporo than Jozankei (定山渓). 2 hot spring accommodations, Matsu-no-Yu (まつの湯) and Yumoto Koganeyu (湯元 小金湯), are built along Toyohira River (豊平川), and have been popular with people for cure since a long time ago. There are Mt. Hakkenzan (八剣山), North Safari Adventure (ノースサファリアドベンチャー), Koganeyu Sakura-no-Mori (小金湯さくらの森) and Sapporo Ainu Culture Promotion Center (札幌市アイヌ文化交流センター) around here. A convenience store is not built around here. Cherry blossoms can be enjoyed at the Koganeyu Sakura-no-Mori, Fall foliage can be enjoyed in the Mt. Onsen Shokudo (ONSEN食堂) is at a building of Hoheikyo Onsen (豊平峡温泉) located in Jozankei (定山渓), Sapporo city. It is a strange combination of hot springs and Indian curry for some reason. But the Indian curry is very popular. Visitors will be always lines on weekends because I suppose that an Indian cooks. Read More
Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort
Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場) is the largest ski resort on Mt. Asaridake (朝里岳) with 1280m in height in Sapporo and is one of most popular ski resorts in Hokkaido. Kiroro Ski Resort (キロロスノーワールド) is the opposite side of the Mt. Asaridake. The Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort at 1100 above sea level has 7 ski courses, 2 gondra lifts and 3 ski lifts in total. There are snowboard park such as Table Top, Hips and Rails, too, so many snowboarders come. Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) is near here, and a lot of tourists stay in the Jozankei Onsen. Yukitoro (雪灯路) is a snow event held around early February in Jozankei Onsen, Sapporo city. About 2000 ice candles are placed on grounds of the Jozankei Shinto Shrine (定山渓神社) established in 1905. The ice candles mixed with a mysterious atmosphere of the Shinto shrine creat an unreal atmosphere, so it is a popular reason. Business hour is from 18:00 to 21:00. Admission fee is free of charge and a parking lot is free of charge, too. Article is this
