[Shichiku Garden in Obihiro] Various Flowers Can Be Enjoyed at Old Woman's English Garden
Shichiku Garden (紫竹ガーデン) is a popular garden that is one of 8 gardens chosen by Hokkaido Garden Path (北海道ガーデン街道) in the southern part of Obihiro city, and is far away from the downtown of the Obihiro, and is near Kofuku Station (幸福駅) and Tokachi Obihiro Airport. Mrs. Akiyo Shichiku (紫竹 昭葉) over 90 years old is a garden owner, and has opened the garden sorrounded by fields since 1992. About 2500 types of flowers are planted from a spring to an autumn at the site of about 60,000 m2. About 100,000 people visit the popular garden. Admission is JPY 1000. A parking lot is free of charge. Only the garden is closed from late December to mid April. But a restaurant opens a business through the winter season.
Kofuku Station (幸福駅) is a former station in Kofuku-cho located in the south part of Obihiro city, and was closed in 1987. Around here was originally named "幸震 (Satsunai)", but reading out loud is difficult, so they used "福 (Fuku)" and renamed "Kofuku" because a lot of emigrants from Fukui Prefecture (福井県) settled around here. The station is preserved as a traffic playground at present, and still has some traces of the past. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Read More
Except the garden, Garden Shop Orangery and Restaurant Flower Hearts are built at the site, too. About 1600 types of flowers and vegetables are sold at the shop, and dishes and sweets are served at the restaurant, and morning buffet that customers can chat with Mrs. Shichiku is also popular. * An advance reservation is required. I ate a soft serve ice cream, and it was tasty.
A highway bus "Potato Liner (ポテトライナー)" runs between the Obihiro and the Sapporo, and a express bus "North Liner-go (ノースライナー号)" runs between the Obihiro and Asahikawa. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Obihiro Station and Obihiro Airport.
Obihiro (帯広) that about 170,000 people live is the 6th largest commercial city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Eastern Hokkaido area. It has flourished as the center of the Tokachi district. The Obihiro is also a stockyard for agricultural products in whole Tokachi district, and Potato, Beet, Wheat and Chinese Yam are famous as a local product. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 30 degrees in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to nearly -20 degrees in a winter. It has a large temperature gap, but it has less snow relatively in the Hokkaido. Therefore skating is popular in the winter. Mr. Hiroyasu Shimizu, an olympic gold medalist, come from the Obihiro, and there is much competition population of the skating. Read More
Shichiku Garden trip
Flower Path (花の径), Ribbon Flower Bed (リボン花壇), Lined White Birch Trees (白樺並木), Palette Flower Bed (パレット花壇), Lined Apple Trees (リンゴ並木), Wild Flower Garden (ワイルドフラワーガーデン), Perennial Border Garden (宿根ボーダーガーデン), Rose Clematis Path (バラとクレマチスの道), Shade of Trees Garden (木陰園), Rock Garden (ロックガーデン), Water Lily Pond (睡蓮の池), Purple Border (パープルボーダー), Herb Garden (ハーブガーデン), Day-lily Collection (ヘメロカリスコレクション), Grand Mother's Private Garden (おばあちゃんのプライベートガーデン), White Garden (ホワイトガーデン), Lupine Path (ルピナスの道), Primeval Flower Garden (原生花園) and so on are built at the site. The Shichiku Garden has the only entrance, so visitors should enter the garden through an aisle between the shop and the restaurant after they buy a ticket there. The Shichiku Garden is very large, so I guess that it takes about 1-2 hours to look around on foot. Besides, I recommend that visiotrs wear comfortable shoes, too.
I visited here on a weekday in early September. Few visitors came beause of early morning. I wondered few flowers were in the autumn than in the summer. They hold a stamp collecting, so I collected stamps while looking around the garden. Besides, a lots of ceramic dolls were set here and there.
Mrs. Mineko Oku (奥 峰子), a president of Holly Hock Garden in Tokyo, designed this garden. She used to train her gardening skills in Belgium and England, and has become a gardener. Mrs. Oku made the europe style garden because the obihiro looked like the climate of the Europe. This garden is an English garden divided by trees. Therefore, white western-style tables, chairs and a brown gazebo are set at green plants, and a photogenic view is created in the garden.
At the Perennial Border Garden and Rose Clematis Path, tall trees were planted on both sides, and its paths were narrow, so those cast a long shadow in the early morning. If people think that a good picture is important, I think that they should come here in the daytime. The Perennial Border Garden and the Rose Clematis Path were worth seeing this time, so I wanted to see those without the long shadow.
I noticed that most of other visitors looked around the Flower Path, the Ribbon Flower Bed, the Palette Flower Bed, Lined Apple Trees, the Perennial Border Garden and Rose Clematis Path. I guessed that they were tired because they walked for a long distance. So I think that you look around other gardens if you have energy enough to spare for walking. Lawn garden side is large, so it has a large space.
I found 5 small desk for the stamp collecting, so my stamp collecting was completed. I brought this paper to the ticket office, and a shop clerk gave a pack of cookies with flowers caught at this garden to me. The cookie was slightly sweet flavor.

In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons.
