[Senbodai Lookout in Rumoi] Whole Rumoi Can Be Viewed at Famous Place to See Setting Sun
Senbodai Lookout (千望台) is on a hill at about 180 m above sea level in the southern part of Rumoi city, and visitors can view whole city of the Rumoi. Here is a good place to see the setting sun, and the setting sun in the Rumoi has been chosen as "100 Best Setting Sun in Japan (日本の夕陽百選)". It is also famous as a night view tourist attractions. There is Rurumoppe-Ikoi-no-Mori Forest (るるもっぺ憩いの森) around here, and Rumoi people sometimes go on a hiking to relax themselves. Senbodai Resthouse (千望台レストハウス) is built at the site, and the visitors can get some rest. A statue of Mr. Okutaro Igarashi (五十嵐億太郎) called a father of Rumoi Port is built, too. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
By the way, a highway bus "Rumoi-go (るもい号)" and an express bus "Haboro-go (はぼろ号)" run between the Rumoi and the Sapporo.
Rumoi (留萌) that about 20,000 people live is the 32th largest port city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Northern Hokkaido area. It is located in the northwestern direction of Asahikawa city, and seafood processing is flourished. Market share of Herring Roe (カズノコ) grows to 50% of the total domestic production. In the old days, a lot of the herrings used to be caught around here. But a herring fishing industry is unfortunately not flourishing at present. As for a climate, the wind is relatively light in a summer, but it is so windy in a winter, and it snows relatively hard. View from Senbodai Lookout
An observation deck is not built at the Senbodai Lookout, and the visitors view the scenery on walks along fences. 3 communications towers block visitors's views, but a comfortable view can be enjoyed. The visitors can get a clear view, such as Teuri Island (天売島), Yagishiri Island (焼尻島) and Mt. Rihirifuji (利尻富士) if it is fine weather.
