Sapporo (札幌) that 1.91 million people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. An origin of its name means "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the fifth largest city in japan. Besides, the population accounts for 30% of Hokkaido's population. As for climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall has more than 1 m.
Many tourist attractions gather in the downtown, and it is one of Sapporo's good points that tourists can move in a relatively short time. There are a lot of famous tourist attractions and restraunts with tasty foods between Sapporo Station Square (札幌駅前) to Odori Park (大通公園). In addition, in spite of such the large city, it takes 30 minutes to reach to the tourist attractions with full of nature such as Mt. Okura (大倉山), Mt. Moiwa (藻岩山) and Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill (羊ケ丘公園). Furthermore, tourists can go to even Otaru city and Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) for a hour. Because a transportation network to the whole Hokkaido develops, Sapporo is convenient for a sightseeing base.
In most cases, traveling sightseeing spots take time in Hokkaido, and means of transportation are limited. Only Sapporo has a suway in Hokkaido, and it is one of the good points that tourists do not have toruble with the means of transportation even in a summer and a winter. The subway seems to be rare in a snowy region globally.
Speaking of local specialities of Sapporo, there are many kinds including Soup Curry (スープカレー), Beer Halls, Mongolian Barbecue (ジンギスカン * Jingisukan), Sapporo Ramen, Crab and Fish, Vegetables. Many cooking ingredients produced in Hokkaido gather to Sapporo. As for restraunts and shops, I think that they serve fresh and reasonable dishes. Furthermore, famous confectioner's shops and antenna-into-the-future shops gather from all over Hokkaido, and tourists can eat tasty foods from all over Hokkaido even in Sapporo. I often hear that tourists gain weight to eat too much while staying in Sapporo. Everybody, please be careful of overeating!
I introduce about standard tourist attractions around Sapporo Station on the first page and introduce about tourist attractions in the suburbs of Sapporo and events on the second page.
