[Sakazuki Onsen in Tomari] Day Trip Bath and Benten Island Can Be Enjoyed

Sakazuki Onsen

Sakazuki Onsen (盃温泉) in Tomari village is a hot-spring place in the west coast of Shakotan Peninsula located in the western part of Otaru city. Precipitous cliffs along shoreline are beautiful. Hot springs has been gushed out since around 1905. The Sakazuki Onsen passed a rigorous screening in 1975, and has been appointed by Minister for the Environment, and is one of 15 nation insurance hot spring resorts in Hokkaido. The Sakazuki Onsen is roughly divided into 2 districts, Benten Island district (弁天島エリア) and Sakazuki Fishing Port district (盃漁港エリア). 6 accommodations and a hot spring facility are built in total, Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. There are the Benten Island (弁天島), the Sakazuki Sea-Bathing Place (盃海水浴場), the Moiwakanko Toilet (もいわ観光トイレ) and the Sakazuki Camping Ground (盃野営場) around the Sakazuki Onsen. The Sakazuki Onsen is crowded with campers and sea bathers in a summer.

The Benten Island and Moiwa River (茂岩川) are famous as an angling place, and a lot of anglers come. Sea fishing and stream fishing can be enjoyed. By the way, Sakazuki Terrace (さかずきテラス) open a business from late April to Octorber at the Sakazuki Sea-Bathing Place, and activities such as a snorkel and a sea kayak can be enjoyed. A cafe is at a building, and they serve pasta or rice and curry.

List of Day Trip Onsen

Tourists can take a day trip bath at Onsen Minshuku Rest-House Iwata (温泉民宿レストハウスいわた) and Sakazuki Moiwa Onsen Hotel (茂岩温泉ホテル) in Benten Island district and at Choko-so (潮香荘) in Sakazuki Fishing Port district. On the other hand, accommodations without taking a day trip bath are Minshuku Asano (民宿浅野), Minshuku Takei (民宿たけい) and Minshuku Tanaka (民宿たなか) in Benten Island district.

Choka-so

Choka-so is a small-sized onsen ryokan on a hillside in the Sakazuki Fishing Port district. The appearance and the interior decoration make the visitors feel Showa period. They only have an open-air bath in the Sakazuki Onsen, and it is well-known for a good view from the open-air bath. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 500. A staying is possible, too, and dishes with a lot of seafood have a good reputation.

There are 1 open-air, 1 indoor bath, 1 cold bath and 1 sauna at the large public tiled bathhouse. The sunny bathhouse with large windows is feeling good. The indoor bath is the size that about 10 people can take a bath.

The open-air bath is the size that about 10 people can take a bath. Hot springs at the open-air bath is more lukewarm than the hot springs at the inddor bath. A sence of openness can be felt because the open-air bath does not has a roof. By the way, views from the open-air bath is a highlight. That is very nice, and bathers can look over Sakazuki Port and the Sea of Japana. The sunset over the Sea of Japan can be seen. A blindfold fence is built, so the bathers would not be able to see the views while bathing, but you might as well enjoy the cool air while seeing the views.

The hot springs are calcium and sodium sulfate spring, and are clear and colorless and have neither taste nor smell. The sum total of of the hot spring ingredients are 1.452 g/kg. The hot springs seem to be drinkable, but a drnking hot spring faciliy is not founded.

Shampoos and body soaps are provided at a bathhouse. A free hair dryer is installed at a dressing room. There is not a restroom at the dressing room, so you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom along a corridor. A free cold water dispenser is provided near the entrances of the bathhouses for men or women. In addition, there are a game place and a capsule toy place at the building.

Onsen Minshuku Rest-House Iwata

Onsen Minshuku Rest-House Iwata is a small-sized onsen ryokan in Benten Island district. I visited here around 10:00 on weekdays. I did not find an owner for a while, but about 10 minutes later I was able to find him. He did something afternoon when I asked him, and he said "You could take a bath only just now", I would take a bath. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 400. I walked through a dining room, and took off my shoes, and raised a corridor, and walked to an entrance of public bathroom. A lot of small paper lanterns hanging on a wall of a corridor caught my eyes. A staying is possible, too.

The public bathrooms are divided into 2 parts, and there are 1 tiled indoor bath at each parts. Each indoor baths are the size that about 4 people can take a bath. The indoor baths use 100% natural free flowing hot springs. It has a smooth and slippery touch slightly. The bathrooms were small, but other visitors did not come, so I relaxed.

Moiwa Onsen Hotel is an onsen ryokan in Benten Island district, and changes to a hot spring facility for day trip bath at present.
