Rumoi (留萌) that about 20,000 people live is the 32th largest port city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Northern Hokkaido area. It is located in the northwestern direction of Asahikawa city, and seafood processing is flourished. Market share of Herring Roe (カズノコ) grows to 50% of the total domestic production. In the old days, a lot of the herrings used to be caught around here. But a herring fishing industry is unfortunately not flourishing at present. As for a climate, the wind is relatively light in a summer, but it is so windy in a winter, and it snows relatively hard. Shore of Rumoi breaked by heavy surging waves is one of 3 Major Surges in The World along with Madras in India and Wick in Scotland, and 7.6 m height and 106 m length surges that was not tsunami was observed, and the highest record is 12.07m. Especially, the sea rages in the winter.
The Rumoi was named after Rur-Mo-Ot-Pe that means “A river that seawater flows to the depth” in Ainu language. The setting sun in the Rumoi has been chosen as “100 Best Setting Sun in Japan (日本の夕陽百選)“. The setting sun across the Sea of Japan is famous for beautiful. It is sometimes said that the setting sun in the Rumoi is the most beautiful in the Japan. The setting sun can be seen from Cape Ogon (黄金岬), Senobodai Lookout (千望台) and Reiju Ranch (礼受牧場), and those are famous tourist attractions in the Rumoi. Except those, well-known tourist attractions are Kamuiwa Comprehensive Park (神居岩総合公園), Rumoi Umi-no-Furusatokan (留萌市海のふるさと館), Miharashi Park (見晴公園) and Golden Beach Rumoi (ゴールデンビーチるもい). Group of Stone Warehouses
The Group of Stone Warehouses is a warehouse of Nippon Express (日本通運) in Rumoi Port, and is relatively close to the Rumoi Station. It is in operation now, so visitors can only look at the appearance of the stone warehouses. I think that the visitors should enjoy that atmosphere rather than a tourist attraction.
