Rebun Island (礼文島) that about 2,600 people live is a slim island from the north to the south, and the circumference of the island is 72 km. The Rebun means "An island in the offing" in Ainu language. About 120,000 tourists come the isolated island. The alpine plants grown only in 3,000 m-class mountains in Japan mainland can be seen at 0 m above sea level in the case of the Rebun Island. About 300 types of wild flowers such as the Rebun Lady's Slipper Orchid (レブンアツモリソウ) bloom, so the another name is called "The floating island of flowers". Trekking and island tourism are popular in the Rebun.
Movie of Rebun Island
The Rebun Island is roughly divided into 2 areas, southern area containing Kafuka with a ferry port and northern area. Kita-no-Kanaria Park (北のカナリアパーク), Momoiwa Observation Deck (桃岩展望台) and Motochi Coast (元地海岸) are famous in the southern area. In the northern area, Cape Sukoton (スコトン岬), Cape Gorota (ゴロタ岬), Cape Sukai (澄海岬) and Lake Kushu (久種湖) are famous, and there is also Sea Urchin Opening Experience Center (うにむき体験センター). Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Rebun, Futaba Shokudo (双葉食堂) and Robata Chidori (炉ばた ちどり) are given michelin plate by the Michelin Hokkaido. In addition, Kaisendokoro Kafuka (海鮮処かふか) and Aoi Shokudo (あおい食堂) are popular in particular. By the way, hot springs gush out in the island, and Rebun Onsen Usuyuki-no-Yu (礼文温泉うすゆきの湯) has a hot spring resource.
Famous trekking courses are 7 courses in total. Those are Momoiwa Observation Deck Course (桃岩展望台コース), Rebun Falls Course (礼文滝コース), Rebun Forest Course (礼文林道コース), 8 Hours Course (8時間コース), Mt. Rebundake Course (礼文岳コース), Lake Kushu Course (久種湖畔コース) and Cape Tour Course (岬めぐりコース). The trekking courses have varoius courses to enjoy wild flowers, nature and the course walking through Rebun Island, and the tourists can select the trekking course depending on the necessary time and the purpose. Rain outfits are necessary because wind is strong, and it is easy to rain. By the way, the 8 Hour Tour with love and spirit of romantic adventure (愛とロマンの8時間コース) is popular with people staying at the noted Momoiswaso Youth Hostel (桃岩荘ユースホステル) of the Rebun Island.

The Rebun has some events. Northernmost Flower Marathon (最北フラワーマラソン大会) is held only in a day, early June, and Marine Product Festival (水産まつり) is held only in a day, late July, and Rebun Shrine Festival (礼文神社祭) is held between 3days in early July, and Itsukushima Shrine Festival (厳島神社祭) is held between 3days in mid July, and Lakeshore Festival (湖畔まつり) is held only in a day, early August, and Strait Festival (海峡まつり) is held only in day, mid August, and Autumn Festa (オータムフェスタ) is held between 2days in mid September.
A mean of transportation to the Rebun Island is a ferry. The ferry service runs between the Kafuka Port and Wakkanai Port or Oshidormai Port in the Rishiri Island, and runs between the Kutsugata Port and the Kafuka Port only from June to September. There are some means of transportation for the island tourism, for example, a sightseeing bus and a fixed-route bus managed by the Soya bus (宗谷バス), a sightseeing taxi, a rental car, a rental motor scooter and a rental bicycle. I went around the Rebun Island by the rental motor scooter, and it was very comfortable. The Rebun has a lot of slopes, so I think that the bicycle is tough. By the way, if tourists raise their hand in the case of fixed-route bus happening to pass, they can get on the bus without a bus stop, and can get off the bus without a bus stop.
List of Nature and Tourist Attractions
It is said that the Rebun Island looks like the Ireland, and the island has a lot of highlight such as the blue sea, strangely shaped rocks, the Mt. The Momoiwa Observatoion Deck was named after Momoiwa Rock of about 250 m elevation (桃岩 * Momo means a peach in English and iwa means a rock in English) in front of visitor's eyes, and its shape looks like the shape of a peach. Nekoiwa Rock (猫岩 * Neko means a cat in English) like the shape of a cat back in the sea and Rishiri Island (利尻島) can be seen, too. The Momoiwa Rock and the Nekoiwa Rock are two of 3 great strange shaped rocks in the Rebun Island together with Jizoiwa Rock (地蔵岩). A parking lot is offered near an entrance to the observatoion deck, and a public restroom is built beside the parking lot. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. By the way, the visitors must go up a hill from Kafuka Port (香深港) to here, and may considerably have a hard time on foots or by bicycles. I was dead tired. But coming back was a breeze. Read More

Motochi Coast (元地海岸) with Menou Beach (メノウ海岸) and Jizoiwa Rock (地蔵岩) is a coast in the southwestern part of Rebun Island (礼文島), and is famous as a good place to see the beautiful sunset, too. The beach used to be a part of Love and Romance 8-Hour Course. But the beach to the Jizoiwa Rock is prohibited to enter at present because rocks may be fallen. So the number of visitors have decreased. Most of the visitors seem to come to find agates at the Menou Beach in front of the parking lot. As its name suggests (The Menou means "Agate" in English), this beach was named after finding a lot of the agates. But the agates may not be found now. The Sea of Japan is very beautiful, so the visitors are charmed by the blue. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Read More

Because the Rebun Island is surrounded by the sea, tasty seafood is famous. Some restraunts serve seafood near Kafuka Port. Salmon Roe Rice Bowl
Kaisendokoro Kafuka (海鮮処かふか) is a seafood restaurant in Rebun Island. Kafuka fishery cooperative (香深漁協) runs it, and there is a building near Kafuka Port. It is popular for eating fresh seafood. I visited here around 11:00 on weekdays. A waitress asked me whether I grilled the seafood at first when I entered the restraunt. They seem to show me to a room of Japanese-style barbecue cooked in front of customers if I want to grill a sea urchin and an atka mackerel and eat those. But I wanted to eat a rice bowl, they showed me to my table at the restraunt. The restraunt was so large, and there were many tables and family customers seem to enjoy. Read More

Therefore the opening hour is not fixed in particular, too, and it seemed to open the restraunt around 12:30 on this day. I heard that the ramen of Futaba Shokudo was tasty and visited around 13:30 on weekdays. Read More
