[Motochi Coast in Rebun Island] Jizoiwa Rock and Menou Beach Are Famous for Good Place to Beautiful Sunset

Motochi Coast

Motochi Coast (元地海岸) with Menou Beach (メノウ海岸) and Jizoiwa Rock (地蔵岩) is a coast in the southwestern part of Rebun Island (礼文島), and is famous as a good place to see the beautiful sunset, too. The beach used to be a part of Love and Romance 8-Hour Course. But the beach to the Jizoiwa Rock is prohibited to enter at present because rocks may be fallen. So the number of visitors have decreased. Most of the visitors seem to come to find agates at the Menou Beach in front of the parking lot. As its name suggests (The Menou means "Agate" in English), this beach was named after finding a lot of the agates. But the agates may not be found now. The Sea of Japan is very beautiful, so the visitors are charmed by the blue. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge.

Here is well-known as as a shooting place for Japanese movie "A Chorus of Angels (北のカナリア達)" that Ms. Sayuri Yoshinaga (吉永小百合), a famous actress, played a roll used here, too. A public restroom and a souvenir shop are beside the parking lot, and agate souvenirs can be bought at the shop.

There are some means of transportation for the island tourism, for example, a sightseeing bus and a fixed-route bus managed by the Soya bus (宗谷バス), a sightseeing taxi, a rental car, a rental motor scooter and a rental bicycle. I went around the Rebun Island by the rental motor scooter, and it was very comfortable. The Rebun has a lot of slopes, so I think that the bicycle is tough. By the way, if tourists raise their hand in the case of fixed-route bus happening to pass, they can get on the bus without a bus stop, and can get off the bus without a bus stop.

Jizoiwa Rock

The Jizoiwa Rock is a huge rock in the northern part of the coast, and its height is about about 50 m. The rock was named as such because the huge rock looked like the guardian deity of children putting palms together from the sea. * The Jizo (地蔵) means "The guardian deity of the children" in English. The Jizoiwa Rock is one of 3 great strange shaped rocks in the Rebun Island together with Momoiwa Rock (桃岩) and Nekoiwa Rock (猫岩). In old days, visitors could reach the foot of the rock, and put their coins between gaps of rocks as offering money. But the private land is off-limits to tourists now.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
