Strangely-Shaped Rocks and Strangely-Named Islands Can Be Enjoyed in Northernmost of Rebun Island -Cape Sukoton in Rishiri Island-
October 20th, 2015
Cape Sukoton (スコトン岬) is a tourist attraction in the northernmost of Rebun Island (礼文島). There is an observatory on the tip, and Todo Island (トド島), a neighborhood of Manju rocks (マンジュウ岩) and Tataki Island (タタキ島) can be seen, and tourists can see Sakhalin Island if it is fine. There is Minshuku Sukotonmisaki on the way to Sukotonmisaki Observatory. It seems to be able to stay only for 3 months in a summer.

The Todo Island is an uninhabited island at 1 km away from the north side of Cape Sukoton, and the circumference of the island is about 4 km. Marine mammals and seabirds such as Harbor Seal and Slaty-backed Gulls inhabit there. Because dozens of Sea Lions gathered for passing a winter from November to April and those were ever hunted, it was named the Todo Island, Todo means the Sea Lion in Japanese language.

This is a starting point of Cape Tour Course. Tourists can walk for about 4 hours from here to Hamanaka (浜中) via Rebun Atsumoriso [Lady's Slipper Orchids] (レブンアツモリソウ) growing place. In addition, the wind is strong at Cape Sukoton, please be careful not to blow your hat and not to be gotten hair messy. There are a restroom and Sukotonmisaki Sightseeing Souvenir Shop "Shima-no-Hito (島の人)" near a parking lot. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
