[Katsuei Ramen in Rumoi] Katsuei Special Ramen Mixed Soy Sauce Soup with Miso Soup
Ekimae Kaiei Ramen (駅前海栄らーめん) is a popular ramen restraunt in Rumoi city located in the western part of Asahikawa city, and is near Rumoi Station. They got the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition and 2017 Special Edition. The ramen restraunt is on the 1st floor of a 2 story multi-tenant building, and a surfboard is displayed at the entrance, so I guess that a ramen restraunt owner likes the sea. Its name uses the sea (海 * Kai) in Chinese charactor, too.
The ramen restraunt is not so large, but the interior decoration uses a lot of woods, so warmth of the woods is felt. Oldies posters are put on walls, so it looks like a cafe or a bar. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers may enjoy meals.
Rumoi (留萌) that about 20,000 people live is the 32th largest port city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Northern Hokkaido area. It is located in the northwestern part of Asahikawa city, and seafood processing is flourished. Market share of Herring Roe (カズノコ) grows to 50% of the total domestic production. In the old days, a lot of the herrings used to be caught around here. But a herring fishing industry is unfortunately not flourishing at present. As for a climate, the wind is relatively light in a summer, but it is so windy in a winter, and it snows relatively hard. Shore of Rumoi breaked by heavy surging waves is one of 3 Major Surges in The World along with Madras in India and Wick in Scotland, and 7.6 m height and 106 m length surges that was not tsunami was observed, and the highest record is 12.07m. Especially, the sea rages in the winter. Read More
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Read More
Kaiei Special Ramen
I visited here around 13:15 on a weekday. 4 customers enjoyed their meals. I sat at a counter seat, and read a menu. I knew that Kaiei Special Ramen (海栄らーめんスペシャル) and Soy Sauce Broth Ramen were most popular, so I selected the special ramen, and ordered it. The price was JPY 850. The water was self-service.
While I was looking at the posters, I waited for about 10 minutes. The ramen was served. A roasted pork fillet, bamboo shoots, a Japanese dry baked wheat gluten, a dried laver and green onions were on noodles. I ate a sip of soup immediately. It was tasty! This soup was mixed soy sauce broth soup with miso broth soup, and was mild like pork bone broth. Deep-fried garlic tips worked good, too.
The chewy noodles were curled noodles made by Futaba Making-noodles Factory (フタバ製麺) in the Rumoi, and went well with the soup. I ate up it without delay. It was the rule that customers returnen their ramen bowls or cups themselves, so I did it last. Thanks for the tasty ramen!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
