[Mizuno in Asahikawa] Ginger Ramen Warms Eater's Body
May 27th, 2014
Shoga Ramen Mizuno (生姜ラーメン みづの) is a long-established ramen restaurant founded in 1965 in Asahikawa city, and is near Tokiwa Park and a traffic circle. Mr. Ryuji Mizuno (水野 龍司) is a restaurant owner now, and the Mizuno is well-known for serving Soy Sauce Broth Ginger Ramen (生姜ラーメン). Because the temperature sometimes gets down to 30 C below zero in the Asahikawa in a winter, I suppose that ramen using ginger that is effective for warming a body is popular with Asahikawa people, so a lot of customers come to savor it. By the way, a parking lot is not provided.
The ramen restaurant with an atmosphere such as the Showa period is not large. All the seats are table seats, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. A lots of autographed cards are closely stuck on a wall, so I think that the Mizuno is also popular with celebrities.

Asahikawa (旭川) that about 340,000 people live is the 2nd largest commercial city in Hokkaido, and has flourished as the center of the North Hokkaido area. Woodworks have been prosperous since the old days, and furniture is famous. Because water is clear, a liquor such as sake of Otokoyama (男山) and Godo Shusei (合同酒精) are famous, too. Popular tourist attractions such as Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) and Biei (美瑛) are around the Asahikawa, so a lot of tourists use tourist bases in the North Hokkaido. As for a climate, the Asahikawa is located in Kamikawa Basin, the largest basin in the Hokkaido, so it is hot that temperature rises to 30 degrees C in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to -25 degrees C in a winter, and it snow very hard, too. So a winter festival using the snow is famous. Article is here
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Article is here
Soy Sauce Broth Ginger Ramen
I visited here around 17:00 on a weekday. No customers came. As its name suggests on a signbord, the Soy Sauce Broth Ginger Ramen is famous, so I could not help eating it, and ordered it. The price was JPY 630. They also serve Miso Broth Ramen and Salt Broth Ramen, but the Ginger Ramen has only the Soy Sauce Broth.
About 5 minutes later, the Soy Sauce Broth Ginger Ramen was served. Bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, green nions and roasted pork fillets were on noodles. I had a sip of soup immediately. It tasted light soy sauce flavor. The soup turned into very mild by the ginger, and I did not feel salty than its looks. It was tasty! My body warmed very much. I think that it is suitable for a cold winter in the Asahikawa. The noodles made by Kato Ramen went well with the soup, too. Thanks for the tasty ramen!
