Neighborhood of Onuma Quasi-National Park
Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園) has area of 9,083 ha on the foot of Mt. Komagatake (駒ヶ岳) and is composed of Lake Ounma (大沼湖), Lake Konuma (小沼湖), Junsai Swamp (蓴菜沼) and Mt. Komagatake, an active volcano with 1,131 m in height. When Mt. Komagatake erupted from 50,000 to 30,000 years ago, a river was dammed by flowing mud flood, and these wetlands were born. The wetlands have been designed as the Ramsar Convention wetland, wild waterfowls such as Goose and Duck rest their wings on the surface of the lake.

The perimeter of the Lake Onuma is about 24 km and the perimeter of the Lake Konuma is about 16 km. 126 islands float on the surface of the lake, and 18 bridges connecting the islands are built. It is a way of enjoying taking a walk on the water while looking over the lake and Mt. Komagatake. Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma were beauty spots that many nonnative people come to enjoy in the Meiji period. I felt just like a foreign atmosphere when I heard so. In addition, a sightseeing boat run, and tourists can make a round trip for about 30 minutes.

Lake Onuma with Fall Foliage
Lake Onuma (大沼) is the largest lake in Onuma Quasi National Park, and is known as a beauty spot for fall foliage in Hokkaido, too. A combination of Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳) and small islands with fall foliage floated on the surface of the Lake Onuma is very good. 4 trails, Oshima Trail (大島の路), Forest Trail (森の小径), Island Hopping Trail (島巡りの路) and Sunset Trail (夕日の道), are provided around Park Plaza (公園広場), and I have walked the Oshima Trail and the Island Hopping Trail on foot. By the way, bicycles are prohibited on the trails. The best time to see is from late October to early November. Admission free. A parking lot is chraged. Article is here

Lake Onuma Area
Lake Onuma is located in the eastern part of Japan National Route 5, Onuma Park Square (大沼公園広場), Onuma Kohan Wetland (大沼湖畔湿地), Higashi-Onuma Camping Ground (東大沼キャンプ場), Oiwaenchi (大岩園地), Onuma Komagadake Shrine (駒ヶ岳神社) and Oiwa Rocks (大岩) and Reisendo (霊泉洞) are famous as sightseeing spots in the Lake Onuma Area.
Onuma Park Square
Onuma Park Square near Onuma-Koen Station is located between Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma and is a sightseeing base of Onuma Quasi-National Park, there are hotels, souvenir shops and restraunts. Tourists can enjoy to get on a sightseeing boat and can borrow rental cycles to make a round trip around the Lake Onuma and the Lake Konuma. In addition, walking paths are built and the tourists like old nonnative people can enjoy a scenery in those days.

Onuma Kohan Marsh
Onuma Kohan Marsh (大沼湖畔湿地) is located in the east side of the Lake Onuma (大沼), Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate and is known for skunk cabbage and narcissus in early spring. Wooden paths are built on the marsh, and tourists can reach to the shore and can look at Mt. Komagadake. A parking lot is not provided and there is not facility at all. Admission free. Oiwaenchi (大岩園地) is located in the north side of the Lake Onuma (大沼), Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate. I tried searching the Oiwaenchi on the internet, but I did not know because containg Onuma Komagadake Shrine (大沼駒ヶ岳神社) and Oiwa Rock (大岩) are called Oiwaenchi or a place projecting into the Lake Onuma is called Oiwaenchi. When I visited here, a path leaded to the shore of the Lake Onuma. There was a floating pier on the shore. But it was prohibited to enter the floating pier. A restroom was built near an entrance. Onuma Komagadake Shrine and Oiwa Rock
Onuma Komagadake Shrine (大沼駒ヶ岳神社) and Oiwa Rock (大岩) are located in the north side of the Lake Onuma (大沼), Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate. It takes about 5 minutes from Oiwaenchi to here. There used to be a trailhead for Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳). Onuma Komagadake Shrine was founded for praying for safety of mountain climbers in 1914. The Oiwa Rock is a huge rock, when Mt. Komagatake erupted in 1914, the Oiwa Rock seemed to fly out of the volcano. The height of the Oiwa Rock is about 5 m, and the perimeter is about 20 m. There is a cleft in the middle of the rock, and tourists can pass through the rock. It is said that a wish comes true, if the tourists make a wish while passing through the rock. Therefore it is famous as a spiritual place. Admission free. Article is here

Reisendo (霊泉洞) is a spring located in the north side of the Lake Onuma (大沼), Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate. It is famous as a spiritual place, and there are a Torii (gateway to shinto shrine) and a Shrine, and it has a slightly mysterious atmosphere. An iron ladder was installed towards the surface of the lake when I looked carefully. When I went down the ladder, spring water was gushing out from a cleft in rocks. This will be an origin of the Reisendo. I did not drink it because of a distance. Admission free. Article is here
Higashi-Onuma Camping Ground
Higashi-Onuma Camping Ground is located in the east side of the Lake Onuma. There are a stall and restraunt, a common kitchen, a restroom. There is not a manager at the campsite.

Lake Konuma Area
Lake Konuma is located in the east part of Japan National Route 5, Shinnuma Kosenkyo Bridge (新大沼跨線橋) and Higureyama Observatory (日暮山展望台) are famous as sightseeing spots in Lake Konuma Area.
Higureyama Observatory (日暮山展望台) is located in the west side of the Lake Konuma (小沼), Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate. Visitorss can look over the Lake Onuma (大沼) and Lake Konuma from the mountaintop of the Mt. Higure ((日暮山) with 303 m in height. A scenery is wonderful from there. But an attention is necessary for driving because a road is a gravel path and the withd of the road is only one car width. There are a parking lot and a restroom near the mountaintop. Admission free. Shinonuma Kosenkyo Bridge
Shinonuma Kosenkyo Bridge (新大沼跨線橋) is a scenic spot in the south side of the Lake Konuma, Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate. Tourists can look over Lake Konuma (小沼) and Mt. Komagatake (駒ヶ岳) from a small hill. Rails of Hakodate Main Line (函館本線) lead to a station under visitor's eyes, and this is a famous photography place of the railroad photograph. Many railfans held their camera along the railroad. There are no facilities at all. Article is here
Junsai Swamp Area
Junsai Swamp Area is located in the western part of Japan National Route 5, and the Junsai Swamp Area is famous as sightseeing spots in the Junsai Swamp Area.
Junsai Swamp (蓴菜沼) is a freshwater swamp in Nanae located in the northern part of Hakodate, and Junsai (蓴菜) means a water shield in English, so as the name suggests, the water shield is produced. The perimeter of the marsh is about 7.3 km. It is located in the western part of Japan National Route 5, there are walking paths and spring water called Gozensui (御膳水) as sightseeing spots in Junsai Swamp Area. But tourists do not seem to drink water that gushes out at Gozensui for being unfit to drink. In addition, the wooden paths seemed to destroy and not to enter. Fishing smelts can be enjoyed in a winter. There are a parking lot, a restroom and a buckwheat noodle restaurant. The buckwheat noodles are popular, too. Admission free. There are hot springs around the Lake Onuma. Higashi-onuma Onsen in the east side across Lake Onuma and Nishi-onuma Onsen in the west side across Lake Onuma are famous.
Onuma Onsen is in Nanae town located in the northern part of Hakodate city. There are 2 hot-spring facilities in Nishi-onuma and Higashi-onuma across Lake Onuma. There are Lucky Pierrot which is famous for a hamburger and Kerun which is famous for a hamburger steak along National Route 5 nearby Onuma Onsen. Article is here
