[Ofuna Onsen in Hakodate] Day Trip Onsen and Only Sulfur Spring in Oshima Peninsula Can Be Enjoyed
September 1st, 2014
Ofuna Onsen (大船温泉) is a hot spring place in Ofuna-cho, Hakodate city located in the northeastern part of Hakodate city, and is popular as the only hot spring place to bath sulfur hot spring in Oshima Peninsula (渡島半島). Kami-no-Yu Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so (上の湯「ホテル函館ひろめ荘」) and Shimo-no-Yu (下の湯) are built along Ofuna River and Hokkaido Road 980. There is Kasen Park (河川公園) named kita-no-Sakanatsuki-no-Mori (北の魚つきの森) near the Kami-no-Yu Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so, and a camping ground and an open-air barbecue facility are provided. A lot of tourists seem to come in a summer. By the way, Manjojiki Highland (万畳敷高原) and Ayame Marshland (アヤメ湿原) are relatively famous tourist attractions near here.
It is the origin of the Ofuna Onsen that an onsen hut was built at the Shimo-no-Yu in 1839. It was said that it changed to a public bath only for local people, but ordinary bathers can take a bath currently. Unfortunately, a photography is prohibited at the site. Users of the Kami-no-Yu and the Shimo-no-Yu are different, people that want to enjoy a modern bath facility use the Kami-no-Yu, and people that want to savor pure hot springs without adding water and a historical bath without cleaness use the Shimo-no-Yu.
Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. Hakodate has a lot of slope lands, and the Hakodate has a lot of narrow roads. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard. Article is here
List of Day Trip Onsen
Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Kami-no-Yu Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so and the Shimo-no-Yu.
Kami-no-Yu Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so
Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so is a small-sized onsen hotel founded in 1995, and is well-known for savoring 2 types of fresh free flowing hot springs. It is next to Minami-Kayabe Rest Center (南かやべ保養センター), a day trip hot spring bath facility, but an entrance of the Minami-Kayabe Rest Center is at the Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so, and day trip bathers must pay the entrance fee to the bath facility at the front of the hoel, so the Minami-Kayabe Rest Center is a part of the Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so neartly. In addition, a staying is possible at the Hiromeso, too.
There are 2 bathhouses on the 1st floor or the 2nd floor, if day trip bathers pay each entrance fee to both bath facilities, they can use both the bath facilities. Of course, hotel guests can use both of those. I used only the bath facility on the 1st floor. An entrance fee to a bath facility is JPY 400. Restraunt "Isotei" (レストラン 磯亭) is at the Hotel Hakodate Hirome-so, and a restraunt is at the the Minami-Kayabe Rest Center, too, and visitors for day trip bath can use the restraunts.
Not only the bath facility but also resting places and a training gym at the Minami-Kayabe Rest Center, about 30 local people relaxed each in their own way when I visited here around 12:00 on weekdays, and I saw that it was very popular for local people.
There are 2 outdoor baths, 1 indoor bath, 1 sleeping bath, 1 cold bath and 1 sauna at a public bathhouse. The sunny white tiled bathroom with a hig ceiling and large windows is feeling good. The indoor bath is the size that about 15 people can take a bath, and uses natural free flowing (2)sodium chloride carbonated spring with adding water. Whitish hot springs have smooth and slippery touch. The sleeping bath seats 4 people, and uses hot springs with adding water.
The outdoor baths are the size that about 5 people can take a bath, and use natural free flowing (1)sulfur and sodium chloride spring with adding water. Sulfur smell is in the air. The differences of those outdoor baths are a roof and water temperature. Fall foliage can be seen from an open-air bath without the roof, and I enjoyed a sense of openness. The milky white hot springs have a really good feel.
As for the 2 types of the hot springs, One is (1) sulfur and sodium chloride spring, and is opaque and milky white and has bitter taste and sulfur smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 2.026 g/kg. The other is (2) sodium chloride carbonated spring, and is clear and whitish and has a little salty and no smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 2.235 g/kg. Meta-silicic acid is 202.1 mg/kg. It is said that the hot springs including the meta-silicic acid with over 200 mg/kg is effective for beautiful skin. Unfortunately, both the hot springs are not drinkable because a public health center does not give a permission to drink the hot springs. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A free hair dryer and a restroom are installed at a dressing room.

Shimo-no-Yu is a public bath with a long history. An onsen hut was built in 1839. There is a bathhouse beside an owner's private house, and there are 1 indoor bath and 1 dressing room at the bathhouse. The indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and 100% natural free flowing hot springs. Both the appearance and the interior decoration have a historical atmosphere. Fresh hot springs flow freely from the bath.
The hot springs are sulfur and sodium chloride spring, and are opaque and milky white and have tasteless and sulfur smell. But I do not know details because there is not a hot spring analysis book. There are no shower and no amenities such as a shampoo. Because there is not a restroom at the building, You should get a wash before visiting here.
This is great onsen that an onsen fancier can not stop loving. Because there is not a faucet of water to lower water temperature, a few onsen seems to bathe directly oneself at 100% pure hot springs. But I had to bear to heat and take a bath because the hot springs were quite hot. I came to have a pain in skin tinglingly. But after bathing, I felt very refreshing.
