Nishishunbetsu Onsen

Nishishunbetsu Onsen (西春別温泉) is a hot spring place in Bekkai town located in the northeast part of Kushiro city. Pension Clover House (ペンション クローバーハウス) is built beside Nishishunbetsu Warm Water Pool (西春別温水プール) along Pilot National Route (National Route 243). The distance is around 500 m away from the center of Nishishunbetsu, and restaurants, a bar with a surcharge, Izakaya, a convenience store are built there, too. There are Tawadaira Observaton Deck (多和平展望台) around here, and Lake Mashu (摩周湖), Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖) and Kaiyodai Observatory (開陽台) are relatively near here.

A type of hot springs is sodium chloride carbonated spring with moor hot spring. The moor spring is brown spring that gushes out from a peat bed or a lignitic bed, and contains a lot of organics of plant origin, so it has slippery touch, and is good for a skin, and is called beauty hot spring (美人の湯), too. The moor spring is different from usual types of the hot springs, and the hot springs are recognized as the moor spring if those contain humus. By the way, specialties in the Bekkai are seafood and milk. Local dishes are Bekkai Jumbo Scallop Hamburger (別海ジャンボホタテバーガー) and Bekkai Jumbo Sakhalin Surf Clam and Steak (別海ジャンボホッキステーキ丼). I ate the Bekkai Jumbo Scallop Hamburger at Hamanasu (はまなす), and it was tasty.

Lake Kussharo

Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), the largest caldera lake in Japan, is in Teshikaga town located in the northeastern part of Lake Akan (阿寒湖) and is the second largest caldera lake in the world, too. The perimeter of the lake is about 57 km. There is Nakajima island in the middle of the lake, but a landing is prohibited. The cracks called "Omiwatari (御神渡り * cracks that form in the ice on the Lake)" occur in a winter. Those are the largest size in the Japanese freshwater lake, and the ice cracks seem to occur for 10 km in total length and 2 m in height. In addition, it is famous as a wintering spot for whooper swan, and they rest their wings on the surface of the non-frozen water by hot springs melting. Article is here

Lake Mashu

Lake Mashu (摩周湖) is a caldera lake in Teshikaga town located in the northeastern part of Lake Akan (阿寒湖). The perimeter of the lake is about 19.8 km. The maximum water depth is 211 m, so it is the considerably deep lake. It is known as the 2nd clearest lake after Lake Baikal in the world. The Lake Mashu does not have a river, But it is a mysterious lake that the lake water levels have barely changed if it rains. The Lake Mashu has much fog and a few sunny intervals, and it is called "Foggy Lake Mashu (霧の摩周湖)", too. Article is here

Kaiyodai Observatory

Kaiyodai Observatory (開陽台展望台) in Nakashibetsu town is located in the northwestern part of Nemuro city. There is a circular building on a hilltop with 270 m in height, and it is famous for looking over 330 degrees view along the horizon. I wondered why it was not 360 degrees. On investigation, the horizon looks round in 330 degrees. The other 30 degrees will be the back side. There are a cafe, a stall, a restroom, a photo studio at the building. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. In addition, there is Yoroushi Onsen (養老牛温泉) near the Kaiyodai Observatory. Article is here

It is famous for a large helping of meals in particular, and a chicken cutlet combo is most popular. Article is here

The horizontally long tiled indoor bath is the size that about 6 people can take a bath, and dark brown hot springs catch bather's eyes. It uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs, and the hot springs overflow from the bath. I enjoyed watching the situation, and was surprised at a lot of the hot springs.

Fine bubbles were stuck on my body surface when I soaked myself in the dark brown hot springs. Smooth and slippery touch was good, too. The fine bubbles floating on the surface of the dark brown hot springs reminded me of guinness beer, so I wanted to drink it. By the way, the hot springs are used as hot water from a faucet.

The open-air bath is the size that about 4 people can take a bath, and uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs. It is surrounded by blindfold walls, but a sense of openness can be felt without a roof. A small silo with red roof comes into sight, and the Bekkai is a typical scenery of dairy power. I guess that starysky is beautiful in the evening.
