May 9th, 2013

NISEKO

Niseko (ニセコ) is the general term for towns and villages around Mt. Yotei (羊蹄山) in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and contains Niseko town (ニセコ町), Kutchan town (倶知安町), Kyogoku town (京極町), Makkari village (真狩村), Kimobetsu town (喜茂別町), Kyowa town (共和町), Rankoshi town (蘭越町) and Iwanai town (岩内町). The Niseko means "A river in a gorge" in Ainu language, and the origin of the word is Niseko Anbetsu River (ニセコアンベツ川). In a winter, skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed, and rafting along Shiribetsu River (尻別川) can be enjoyed in a summer. It is one of the features that the Niseko has various nature such as the Mt. Yotei, Shinsen-numa Swamp (神仙沼) and Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼). In addition, tasty water from the Mt. Yotei and tasty ingredients are abundant. In a spring, cherry blossoms can be enjoyed, summer activities and nature can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and winter activities can be enjoyed in a winter, so tourists can enjoy the nature of Hokkaido including various onsen and tasty foods in Niseko throughout the year.

The Niseko Area is well-known as an area of heavy snowfall as well as Asahikawa (旭川), Iwamizawa (岩見沢), Furano (富良野) and Shumarinai (朱鞠内). At the most, amount of snowfall is over 10 m, so winter sports such as ski and snowboard have been popular since a long time, and non Japanese people such as Australian people and Hong Kong people come to enjoy powder snow lately. At present, the Niseko become a large resort that 1.5 million tourists come. An official language is Japanese, but I think that the second common language is English in the Niseko. Niseko poeple have the chance to speak English, so the Japanese people pay attention to the Niseko for studying English.

The Niseko has rich onsen. Types of hot springs are different depending on the hot spring places, and various hot springs from clear hot springs to opaque hot springs can be enjoyed in this narrow area, so here is popular with onsen lovers. But I feel very disappointed that famous secret onsen and popular onsen were shutted down in succession. In spite of that state, hot spring facilities with mud hot springs, open-air baths, fresh free flowing hot springs or hot springs cotainning beauty ingredients keep opening their businesses, so visitors can still enjoy onsen.

Rafting

Speaking of the Niseko in the summer, Rafting of Shiribetsu River is famous. The Shiribetsu River got the first place in the quality of the water ranking in Japan for 11 consecutive years from 1999 to 2011. The tourists will have a fine feeling when they go down the river with a rubber boat in pure water. The time required is 2-3 hours. Some activity companies serve water flowing activities containing the rafting. You can get information regarding online reviews and photos.
