[Niseko Yumoto Onsen in Rankoshi] Day Trip Bath and Mud Onsen Can Be Enjoyed in Niseko's Oldest Hot Spring Place

Niseko Yumoto Onsen (ニセコ湯本温泉) is a hot spring place at around 560 m above sea level in Rankoshi town located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city. There are 3 hot spring facilities, Chisenupuri Ski Resort (チセヌプリスキー場), Niseko Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼), Koyunuma pond (小湯沼), Oyunuma Nature Pavilion (大湯沼自然展示館) and Yumoto Onsen Campsite (湯本温泉野営場) at the foot of Mt. Chisenupuri, and footbath can be enjoyed at the Niseko Oyunuma Pond in a summer, and skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in a winter. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built.

Mr. Oshima (渡島) discovered a geyser at the Niseko Oyunuma Pond in 1885, and it is said that first hot sprins are in all of recorded history in Niseko distrct with various types of hot springs. After that, it is the origin of the Niseko Yumoto Onsen that he built a hut for curing a hot‐spring cure around the Niseko Oyunuma Pond. The Niseko Yumoto Onsen is one of 7 Konbu Onsen Places (昆布七湯) that were used to be in Meiji period and Taisho period, and has the oldest history. Then the geyser has disappeared, but gray sulfur spring are gushing out Abundantly. The Niseko Yumoto Onsen is famous for clay pack onsen. As far as I know, there are only 2 hot spring places, Noboribetsu Onsen and the Niseko Yumoto Onsen, in Hokkaido, and here is an unusual hot spring place in Japan. Metal gets black under the influence of the sulfur. Please take off your noble metals to take a bath, because acids bite into metals.

Niseko Onsenkyo Group passed a rigorous screening in 1958, and the Niseko Onsenkyo Group containing the Niseko Yumoto Onsen has been appointed by Minister for the Environment, and is one of 15 nation insurance hot spring resorts in Hokkaido. There are a lot of the hot spring places such as Niseko Goshiki Onsen (ニセコ五色温泉), Niseko Yumoto Onsen (ニセコ湯本温泉), Niseko Higashiyama Onsen (ニセコ東山温泉), Niseko Konbu Onsen (ニセコ昆布温泉), Niseko Yunosato Onsen (ニセコ湯の里温泉), Niseko Yakushi Onsen (ニセコ薬師温泉), Niseko Niimi Onsen (ニセコ新見温泉), Niseko Ekimae Onsen (ニセコ駅前温泉), Konbugawa Onsen (昆布川温泉), Niseko Weiss Onsen (ニセコワイス温泉), Hanazono Onsen (花園温泉), Hirafu Onsen (ひらふ温泉) and Kutchan Onsen (倶知安温泉) around the Niseko. Types of hot springs are different, and have a wide variety. It is said that Onsen lovers will go crazy for the hot springs. Niseko Yumeguri Onsen Pass (ニセコ湯巡りパス) is issued, and the ticket users can take a bath at 3-4 hot spring facilities.

There are Sakamoto Park, Shinsen-numa Swamp (神仙沼), Niseko Oyunuma Pond (ニセコ大湯沼) and Mishima's Moss Pink Garden (三島さんちの芝桜) in the Niseko, too. In addition, various things can be enjoyed all the year round in the Niseko. For example, Cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in a spring, trecking, ski gondra, rafting and hot air ballooning can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and snowshoes can be enjoyed in the winter. Nonstop buses do not run from Sapporo to here, But Express Bus Niseko-go runs from Sapporo to Ikoi-no-Yuyado Iroha. A courtesy bus for hotel guests of Tsukimi-no-Yado Akahane (月美の宿 紅葉音) runs from Niseko Station to here, and reservation is required.

Shinsen-numa Swamp

Shinsen-numa Swamp (神仙沼) is the largest swamp at about 770 m above sea level in the Shinsen-numa Wetland in Kyowa town located in the western part of Sapporo city, and is well-known for a good place to see beautiful fall foliage, so a lot of visitors come. Mr. Toyomatsu Shimoda (下田豊松), the Japan's first chief scout, that was moved by a phrase "Everything is God, here is a place that a hermit lives in (皆が神、仙人の住みたまう所)" named it the Shinsen-numa Swamp. Shinsennuma Rest Station (神仙沼自然休養林休憩所) is at Shinsen-numa Parking Lot along Hokkaido Road 66, and light meals are served. It opens a business from late May to early November. The parking has Shinsen-numa Nature Forest Lookout (神仙沼自然休養林展望台) and a public restroom. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Article is here

Niseko Oyunuma Pond

Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼) is a hot spring bog at about 560 m above sea level in Niseko Yumoto Onsen (ニセコ湯本温泉), Rankoshi town located in the western part of Sapporo city, and is a hot spring source of the Niseko Yumoto Onsen, and adjoins Yukichichibu (雪秩父). It is smaller than a pond with the same name in Noboribetsu Onsen. The circumference of the pond is about 200 m, and the 1,000 liters per minute of hot springs are gushing out. The pond used to be a geyser in old days, but Anglo-Saxon Mining Company Howl Company drew sulfur too much in the Meiji period, and it was destroyed. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. There are Koyunuma pond (小湯沼), Chisenupuri Ski resort (チセヌプリスキー場), Oyunuma Nature Pavilion (大湯沼自然展示館) and Yumoto Onsen Campsite (湯本温泉野営場) around here. Article is here

Mishima's Moss Pink Garden

Mishima's Moss Pink Garden (三島さんちの芝桜) is a private garden in Niseko, Kutchan town located in the western part of Sapporo city, and is around 1 km away from Kuchan Station. After retirement from a farmer, Mr. Kazuo Mishima (三島和夫) has been planted the moss pink not to prevent tuning a agricultural land into a wasteland since the early 2000s. The moss pink is a perennial plant of the family polemoniaceae native of North America, and is a kind of the phlox. He has expanded the moss pink field every year, and now the park space is 4,000 m2. I was really surprised at the area of moss pink very much when I visited here. Admission free. A free parking lot and a restroom are provided, too. If the parking lot is full, visitors can park their cars at Kutosan Park Parking Lot (くとさんパーク駐車場) and Asahigaoka Park Parking Lot (旭ケ丘公園駐車場). NISEKO

Niseko (ニセコ) is the general term for towns and villages around Mt. Yotei (羊蹄山) in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and contains Niseko town (ニセコ町), Kutchan town (倶知安町), Kyogoku town (京極町), Makkari village (真狩村), Kimobetsu town (喜茂別町), Kyowa town (共和町), Rankoshi town (蘭越町) and Iwanai town (岩内町). The Niseko means "A river in a gorge" in Ainu language, and the origin of the word is Niseko Anbetsu River (ニセコアンベツ川). In a winter, skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed, and rafting along Shiribetsu River (尻別川) can be enjoyed in a summer. It is one of the features that the Niseko has various nature such as the Mt. Yotei, Shinsen-numa Swamp (神仙沼) and Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼). In addition, tasty water from the Mt. Yotei and tasty ingredients are abundant. In a spring, cherry blossoms can be enjoyed, summer activities and nature can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and winter activities can be enjoyed in a winter, so tourists can enjoy the nature of Hokkaido including various onsen and tasty foods in Niseko throughout the year. Visitors can take a day trip bath at Tsukimi-no-Yado Akahane (月美の宿 紅葉音) and Rankoshi Citizen Center Yukichichibu (蘭越町交流センター 雪秩父). On the other hand, an accommodation without taking a day trip bath is Yugomori-no-Yado Adajo (湯ごもりの宿アダージョ). In addition, there is the Koyunuma Pond, natural mud onsen, beware of bears and losting your way.

Tsukimi-no-Yado Akahane

Tsukimi-no-Yado Akahane is a small-sized high class onsen ryokan founded in 2006 on a small hill, and a building is renewed in 2011, and is famous for mud bath that is effective for beauty skin. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 800. A staying is possible, too, and they have only 12 guestrooms. Tasty dishes have a good reputation. A chartered bath only for the hotel guests is proivded, too, and reservation is required.

There are 1 outdoor bath and 1 indoor bath at a public bathhouse. The wooden bathhouse is small but cozy, and has an atmosphere such as old onsen ryokan in the main island of Japan. Bath pails and bath stools are made of trees, too. Those have the warmth of the wood. The indoor bath is the size that about 6 people take a bath, and the hot springs are colder than the outdoor bath. It suits for taking a long bath.

The outdoor bath is linked with the indoor bath by a staircase, so bathers can go up and down without wearing clothes. The outdoor bath is the size that about 8 people can take a bath, and the hot springs are hotter than the indoor bath. The outdoor bath has a roof and blind fence, but bathers can enjoy a view of the Chisenupuri Ski Resort from here.

The mud collects on the bottom of the indoor bath and the outdoor bath. I enjoyed the mud with the innocence of my child, and enjoyed to apply the mud to my body, too. Because it is good for beauty skin, things could not be better. By the way, there are not the mud depending on natural condition. Especially, there are not the mud at all in a winter.

The hot springs are simple sulfur spring, and are gray and opaque and have a little acid taste and sulfur smell. Unfortunately, the hot springs are not drinkable. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom, free hair dryers and a cold water dispenser are installed at a dressing room.

Rankoshi Citizen Center Yukichichibu

Rankoshi Citizen Center Yukichichibu is a hot spring facility for day trip bath founded in 1967 between the Oyunuma Pond and the Chisenupuri Ski Resort, and is famous for enjoying 100% natural free flowing hot springs with sulfur smell. A building was renewed in September 2015, but they do not accept hotel guests at present. A restraunt and a souvenir shop are at a building, too, and onsen eggs are sold at the souvenir shop. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 500. Unfortunately, they are not allowed to take pictures at a bathhouse and a dressing room.

There are 2 open-air baths and 2 indoor baths at a large public bathhouse for men, and there are 5 open-air baths and 2 indoor baths at a large public bathhouse for women. The bathhouse for women is larger than bathhouse for men. The bathhouse is not so large, but sunny bathhouse with large windows is feeling good, and is filled with sulfur odor, so it is just onsen! The small indor bath with hot spring is the size that about 6 people can take a bath. The large indoor bath with lukewarm spring is the size that about 15 people can take a bath. All the baths use 100% natural free flowing hot springs without adding anything.

At outside with sense of openness, 2 open-air baths are built, and there are surrounded by blindfold fence, so a view is not good. The large elliptical-shaped open-air bath with a roof is the size that about 10 people can take a bath. The hot spring is more warm than another one. The small open-air cypress bath is the size that about 4 people can take a bath, and does not has a roof. By the way, mud baths are provided at the open-air bath space for women, so female bathers can play with mud. Unfortunately, baths for men do not have the mud at all.

The hot springs are simple sulfur spring, and are opaque and gray and has slightly metallic taste and sulfer smell. Unfortunately, hot springs are not drinkable. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 0.557 g/kg. Simple hot spring was used to be provided, too. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A free hair dryer and a restroom are provided at a dressing room.
