I do not know why but Konbu (the Konbu means Kelp in English) is named in the mountain, and the origin of the name is not known exactly. But according to legend of Ainu, it is said that a tsunami struck around here in ancient times, so there were a lot of the kelp in the mountain, and aroud here was called "Konbu (Kelp) Mountain", and was named "Konbu". In 7 Konbu Onsen Places (昆布七湯), 3 Konbu Onsen Places were merged with each other in 1930, and Konbu Onsen was born. At present, Hirafu Onsen in Kuttchan is the largest in the Niseko, but the Konbu Onsen was used to be the largest.

[Closing Down] Koikawa Onsen Ryokan

Koikawa Onsen Ryokan is a long-established onsen ryokan founded in 1899, and was used to be called Miyagawa Onsen (宮川) that was one of 7 Konbu Onsen Places during Meiji period and Taisho period, and is the oldest hot spring facility in Niseko Konbu Onsen. Open-air bath is famous for enjoying free flowing hot springs while seeing falls. The ryokan is one of 18 onsen fasilities that the Japan Association of Secluded Onsen Heritage (日本温泉遺産を守る会) will recognize the hot spring facilities using fresh free flowing hot springs in Hokkaido, and has been changed from ryokan to the hot spring facility only for day trip bath since 2017. A building is surrounded by forests and a pond, and the appearance and the interior decoration make me feel history. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. Cafe "Koikawa (カフェ「こいかわ」)" is at the building, too, and tasty dishes have a good reputation. They serve meals and sweets such as Okuhida Ramen (奥飛騨らぁめん) and Onsen Egg Milk Milk Shake (温泉たまごミルクセーキ). Unfortunately, They close a business in March, 2018. This article before closing is as follows.

There are 1 open-air bath and 2 indoor baths at a small public bathhouse. The indoor baths are placed in the center of the tiled bathhouse. Mosaic peony catch people's eyes. I think that the bathhouse like foreign bathhouse is unusual. Organic pigment made from the hot spring ingredients has been deposited on the tiles, and that is nice. By the way, the bathhouse for women is smaller than the bathhouse for men.

The indoor baths are different water temperature, the small indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and has very hot springs. The hot springs overflow from the small indoor bath to the large indoor bath. The large indoor bath is the size that about 8 people can take a bath, and is deep of around 1 m, and the water temperature is suitable for taking a long bath, and the bath uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs. A lot of flowers of sulphur flow in the hot springs near the hot springs gushing place in particular, so I think that the hot springs are very fresh.

The open-air bath named "Takimi-no-Yu (滝見の湯)" is the size that about 6 people can take a bath, and uses free flowing hot springs with adding water. A wooden wall at the open-air bath disturb bathers's view. But there is not a roof, and the open-air bath is close to trees, so a sense of openness can be enjoyed. Falls flow in front of bathers's eyes, too. By the way, a view from the open-air bath for women is nicer than a view from the open-air bath from men.
