Hirafu (比羅夫) is named after Mr. Hirafu Abeno (阿倍比羅夫), and he conquered barbarians around here according to Nihon-shoki (日本書紀 * the oldest chronicles of Japan). The Niseko Hirafu Onsen was also called "Yamada Onsen (山田温泉)" because Mr. Kunikichi Yamada (山田邦吉) discovered hot springs in 1894, and has the second oldest history after Niseko Yumoto Onsen in the Niseko district. After that, it is the origin of the Niseko Hirafu Onsen that Yamada Onsen opened a business in 1897. I did not know why the Yamada Onsen changed to Niseko Hirafu Onsen.
