[Tamagawa Park in Setana] 300,000 Yellow Narcissuses and Pink Cherry Blossom Are Beautiful Combination at Narcissuses Open Space
May 6th, 2015
Tamagawa Park (玉川公園) is a park in Setana town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city. Former Tamagawa primary school is a mark along Pirika National Route (National Route 230), and visitors turn and go straight for around 300 m, and the end of the road is the Tamagawa Park on Mt. Koganeyama with an altitude of about 80 m. Rice fields and Mt. Rappudake can be seen on the hillside. Mr. Goro Niwa (丹羽五郎), a former feudal retainer of Aizu clan, built Tamagawa Shrine on the mountaintop in 1892. The Tamagawa Park was called 'Bansuien (晩翠園)' at that time. By the way, he entered Satsuma Rebellion as an platoon leader, and I guess that he might be a master of a sword. There are Suisen Open Space (水仙広場), Hanami Open Space (花見広場), Aizu Byakkotai Tamagawa Yohaisho (会津白虎隊玉川遥拝所), Goro Niwa Shotokuhi (丹羽五郎翁頌徳碑), 33 Kannon of Satsuma Rebellion (西南の役三十三観音), gazebos, a public restroom and a parking lot on the site. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge, too. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around here.
By the way, Netoi Onsen (ねとい温泉) is near the Tamagawa Park, too. Famous tourist attractions in the Setana are Ukishima Park (浮島公園), Sanbonsugiiwa Rocks (三本杉岩) and Risshozan Observation Deck (立象山公園展望台). Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Setana, Kouda Confectionery Store (甲田菓子店) and Sobadokoro Genkiya (そば処元気屋) are popular in particular. I ate Iwashu Cream Puff and buckwheat noodles there. Those were so tasty.
Netoi Onsen (ねとい温泉) is a hot spring place in Kitahiyama, Setana town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city. The distance is around 6 km away from the center of the Kitahiyama, and only Ryokan Netoi Onsen (旅館ねとい温泉) is surrounded by rice fields. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. There are Tamagawa Park (玉川公園) near here. Article is here
Risshozan Observation Deck
Risshozan Observation Deck (立象山展望台) is a viewing point in the central of Setana town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city, and 2 story building is built on the hilltop of Mt. Risshozan (立象山) with around 95 m in height. Setana town and windmills, Okushiri Island and the Sea of Japan, Sanbonsugi-iwa Rocks, a symbol of Setana, can be looked over from here. Views are very comfortable if the weather is nice. The night sky and the sunset seem to be beautiful. There is the Setana Youth Travel Village (せたな青少年旅行村) beside the Risshozan Observation Deck. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Article is here
Sobadokoro Genkiya (そば処元気屋) is a buckwheat noodles restaurant in Kitahiyama, Setana town. There is a building at a heart of fields. The building is a prefab house, but it has an atmosphere that seems to come across tasty dishes. Customers take off shoes at an entrance and enter the restraunt. I visited here around 14:00 on weekdays, and I sat at a table because there were only 2 groups of visitors. The restraunt was not so large. But there are some tables, so family customers seem to enjoy. Article is here
Iwashu Cream Puff of Kouda Confectionery Store
Kouda Confectionery Store (甲田菓子店) is a long-established Japanese confectionery store in Setana town located in the northwest part of Hakodate city, and has opened a business since 1900. It is famous for Iwashu Cream Puff (岩シュー) using Sanbonsugiiwa Rocks (三本杉岩), a symbol of Setana, as a motif. The appearance is like rocks, and the cream puff dough is crispy. A shop clerk puts fresh custard cream into it just after odering, and its flavor expiration date is only a hour, so it is known for very short flavor expiration date. Their Western confectionery is famous, but Japanese confectionery using the Sanbonsugiiwa Rocks as a motif are sold, too. Article is here
About 30 kinds of about 300,000 narcissuses are planted on the Tamagawa Park, and another name is Suisen (Narcissus) Park. The narcissuses are full in bloom from late April to early May, and about 150 Yezo mountain cherry trees are full in bloom, too, and a conbination of those creates a beautiful scenery. Pink color, yellow color, green color and white color are gorgeous on the gently-hillside of the Suisen Open Space. The view reminds me of a fairyland. By the way, Tamagawa Park Narcissus Festival (玉川公園水仙まつり) is held on second Sunday in May. Food stalls are opened, and events such as a road race, a concert and mochimaki are performed, too.
The time it takes to look around the whole park is around 2 hours. But it takes less than a hour to look around the Suisen Open Space. Few tourist comes on weekdays, so it is said to be a little-known tourist attraction. The tourists can keep an atmosphere as if fine spring weather tempts Japanese gods to have a drinking party all to yourself. I think this scenery looks like it came straight out of Natsume's Book of Friends.
