[Nakatoya Onsen in Sobetsu] Day Trip Onsen and One of 8 Beauty Spots around Lake Toya Can Be Enjoyed at Kimundo-no-Ie

Nakatoya Onsen (仲洞爺温泉) is a hot spring place in the east side of Lake Toya (洞爺湖). Kimundo-no-Ie (キムンドの家) that is a management office is built along Hokkaido Road 132, and is adjacent to Nakatoya Camping Ground (仲洞爺キャンプ場), and is popular with campers to take a bath. The Kimundo means "a lake in a mountain" in Ainu language. A view from the Nakatoya Camping Ground is one of 8 beauty spots around the Lake Toya. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Toyako Onsen Resort (洞爺湖温泉街), Mt. Usu (有珠山) and Mt. Showashinzan (昭和新山) are relatively near here, too.
Lake Toya (洞爺湖) in Abuta town located in the northwestern part of Muroran city is the third largest caldera lake in Japan and was born 10,000 years ago. The perimeter of the lake is about 50 km. 58 sculptures are located around the Lake Toya, and those create scenes in accord with the lake. There is Nakajima island (中島) in the middle of the lake, and tourists can go over to there by a pleasure boat. Geographical features of mountains and lake were authorized in the world Geopark. Mt. Usu (有珠山) in the south side of Lake Toya (洞爺湖) is an active volcano with 733 m in height and is double volcano with Ousu Lava Dome (大有珠), Kousu Lava Dome (小有珠), Mt. Ogari (オガリ山) and Mt. Usushinzan (有珠新山), and erupted 4 times within 100 years ago, so it is very active also in the world. It can be said that the Mt. Usu is one of main actors in Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark (洞爺湖有珠山ジオパーク). Admission free. A parking lot is charged. Article is here
Mt. Showashinzan (昭和新山) in the south of Lake Toya is a volcanic lava dome with 398 m in height. Red surface of the mountain catches eyes, so it is conspicuous at a distance. Speaking of the Mt. Showashinzan, an episode that a wheat field rose just overnight is famous. Actually, the Mt. Showashinzan changed to a current shape after 2 years. It was named "Showashinzan" because Mt. Showashinzan rose in 1944 (Showa period) and it has designated as a special natural treasure since 1957. This volcano is called a type of the beronite volcano, and it is one of only 2 volcanos in the world. Mr. Masao Mimatsu (三松 正夫) that is famous for observing the Mt. Showashinzan and making Mimatsu Diagram (ミマツダイヤグラム) bought the land, so the Mt. Showashinzan is a private land at present. By the way, Mt Usu is very close from the Mt. Showashinzan. Admission free. Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Kimundo-no-Ie.
Kimundo-no-Ie is a hot spring facility for day trip onsen founded in 1999. A building is a log house, and the interior decoration uses a lot of woods produced in Finland, and the warmth of the wood can be felt. An entrance fee to a bath facility is JPY 420. Udon restraunt "Kanazawaya" (うどん「金沢屋」) is at the building, too.
There are 2 indoor baths at a public bathroom. The bathroom with a conbination of wooden board and tile and a window is small but cozy. The large tiled indoor bath is the size that about 5 people can take a bath, and the small tiled indoor bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and both baths use heated 100% natural free flowing hot springs. Only the hot spring gushing out point is provided, and 2 baths are connected with each other, so those are almost 1 bath. It has a faucet for cold water, so it is allowed to add the water for lowering the water temperature.
The hot springs are calcium sulfate spring, and are clear and light yellow green and has neither taste nor smell, and have a little smooth and slippery touch. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 2.676 g/kg. The calcium ions content is 663.7 mg/kg, so it seems to be effective to cure wounds. Drinking hot spring is not permitted by the public health center. Soaps are provided at the bathroom. A restroom and a free hair dryer are installed at a dressing room.
