[Naitai Highlands Farm in Kami-shihoro] Place That Hokkaido's Vast Lands Can be Realized
Naitai Highlands (ナイタイ高原) are in Kami-shihoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city, and the highlands spread over on hillsides of Mt. Naitai with an altitude of 1332 m. In Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park, it is adjacent to Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖), too. Whole Naitai Highlands are a ranch on the hillsides at about 1000 m above sea level, and common people are allowed to go Naitai Resthouse and a open space at about 800 m above sea level. Business season is from late April to late October. Business time is from 07:00 to 18:00 (summer season is 19:00）. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
The Naitai means "a long stream" in Ainu language, and seems to indicate Naitai River along the Naitai Hilands. At the hillsides of the Estern Daisetsu Area, 2700 milk cows are put out to pasture on the area of 1700 ha in Naitai Highlands Farm (ナイタイ高原牧場). They say they are the largest public farm in Japan. Visitors can enjoy a typical scenery of Hokkaido. But Tawadaira Farm in Shibecha has the area of 2100 ha, so the Naitai Highlands Farm is the second largest farm in Japan. In addition, it is said that the game venue of Anime "Girls und Panzer der Film" uses this big space as a motif.
The distance is around 20 km away from the center of the Kami-shihoro, Except a resthouse and an ice cream shop, Restaurants, cafes and a convenience store are not built around here. By the way, Speaking of tasty restaurants and cafes in the Kami-shihoro, Cream Terrace (クリームテラス), Toka-toka (トカトカ) and Natai Highlands Farm Resthouse (ナイタイ高原牧場レストハウス) are popular in particular. I ate sweets at the Natai Highlands Resthouse, and it was tasty.
Lake Shikaribetsu is a freshwater lake at 804 m above sea level, the highest lake in Hokkaido, between Shikaoi town and Kami-shihoro town located in the north part of Obihiro city, and is well-known for enjoying the beautiful starry sky. In the Eastern Daisetsu Area (東大雪エリア), Daisetsuzan National Park, this lake is also the only natural lake in the Daisetsuzan National Park. The perimeter of the lake is about 13.8 km. The maximum water depth is 98.5 m. The lake water is very clear, and it is said that the lake is the 2nd clearest lake after Lake Mashu in Japan or the clearest lake in the Japan, and there are various opinions about clear lake water. After all, the lake has very clear lake water. It is also well-known for the only lake that Miyabe Charr (ミヤベイワナ), "Dolly Varden Trout (オショロコマ)" that was confined in the lake evolves, inhabits. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Read More
Naitai Heights Rest House
Naitai Heights Rest House (ナイタイ高原レストハウス) is around top of Naitai Heights at about 800 m above sea level in Kami-shihoro town. If it is fine, it is the place with wonderful views. Because the whole heights are a cow ranch, I supposed that milk was tasty, and I ate a soft serve ice cream there. The flavor was vanilla taste. The price was JPY 300. Read More
Daisetsuzan National Park
Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the center of Hokkaido is the largest national park in Japan, the size of 226,764 ha, and has been designed as the national park since 1934, and is the oldest national park in the Hokkaido along with Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園). A mountain named Daisetsuzan does not exist, and the whole area including the mountains with over 2,000 m above sea level such as Mt. Asahidake (旭岳), the highest mountain in Hokkaido, Mt. Kurodake (黒岳), Mt. Aibestudake (愛別岳), Mt. Tomuraushi (トムラウシ山) is collectively called "Daisetsuzan", and those are called "A roof of the Hokkaido" ,too. Rare nature such as active volcanoes, Lare Columnar joints, a sea of trees and permafrost even in the Hokkaido can be seen. About 250 types of alpine plants grow naturally, and various forms of life such as brown bear, blakiston's fish owl, dolly varden and pine grosbeak inhabit here. By the way, A right notation is "Daisetsuzan", but local people often call "Taisetsuzan". Read More
Naitai Highlands Farm
The Naitai Highlands Farm is the second largest public farm in the Japan, and is a special ranch of raising only the milk cow, too. Tourists can enter the farm, and Monument of Gratitude for Domestic Animal (家畜感謝の碑), an opne space, the Naitai Highlands Resthouse, Bokujo-no-Eki (牧場の駅), a restroom and the parking lot are built at about 800 m above sea level. If it is fine weather, Tokachi plain can be seen from the parking lot or the open space, and visitors can realize Hokkaido's vast lands. 150,000 tourists come to see the scenery.
A conbination of green color and blue color is comfortable. Even in a summer, it is not too hot and a pleasant breeze blows because of the highlands. It is said that a sea of clouds is very impressive, too. A meal or a soft serve ice cream used for milk of the Naitai Highlands Farm cows are served at the Naitai Highlands Resthouse, and the tourists can taste thick milk. * A log house of the Naitai Highlands Resthouse was destroyed by a typhoon in 2016, so temporary shops are built at present.
Naitai Terrace (ナイタイテラス) has been built since 2019, and the highland farm and Tokachi Plain can be viewed. Look out Cafe (展望カフェ) opens a business at the building, and meals, sweets and drinks can be savored. All glass windows are covered at the foot of the mountain side, so the meals are enjoyed while viewing a good scenery. In addtion, several souvenirs are also sold.
Hokkaido Road 806 and the Naitai Highlands Resthouse are linked by a highland road with about 6 km in total. A view from the neighborhood of the mountaintop was splendid, but I was impressed in a scenery on the hillside. The Naitai Highlands are a perfect place if you want to realize magnificent the sky and nature of Hokkaido. It is said that Hokkaido's land is large, but there are few places that the tourists can see this splendid scenery.
A treehouse that was used in CM of Nescafe Gold Blend, Mr. Toshiaki Karasawa (唐沢寿明) and Mr. Takashi Kobayashi (小林崇), a treehouse creator, appear, used to be near an entrance gate, but it was broken by the typhoon in 2016. A new treehouse has been built for CM of Kirin Green Lavel, Mr. Go Ayano (綾野剛) and Ms. Ran Taniguchi (谷口蘭) appear. I wonder if the Naitai Highlands are relaed to the treehouse.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons.
