[Yakitori-no-Ippei Head Office in Muroran] Salty-Sweet Pork Juice and Secret Sauce Is Spreaded over in My Mouth After Eating Muroran Yakitori
November 4th, 2014
Yakitori-no-Ippei (やきとりの一平) is a popular Yakitori restaurant run by Ippei Honten corp. in Muroran city. Mr. Kameji Ishizuka (石塚 亀ニ) established it in 1950. The head office is in Nakajima-cho, and some branch restaurants open a business in the Muroran, Sapporo, Date and Noboribetsu. The Yakitori-no-Ippei is well-known for serving Muroran Yakitori (室蘭焼き鳥) called the comfort food of the Muroran, and won twice in National Yakitori Olympics (全国やきとリンピック).
I visited the Head Office around 17:30 on a weekday. The restaurant with the retro style interior decoration was already crowded with a lot of customers. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals.
Muroran (室蘭) that 90,000 people live is the 11th largest city in Hokkaido and is located in the central Hokkaido and is facing the Pacific ocean. Muroran has a relatively calm climate, it is cold with temperatures 20 degrees in a summer, it is warm with temperatures -2 degrees in a winter. Muroran is called Iron Town and developed as a port town of heavy and chemical industries. It is famous that there are factories of Nippon Steel Sumikin (新日鉄住金) and Japan Steel Works (日本製鋼所), As for Kanamoto (カナモト * the TSE First Section presentation) and Narasaki Industry (ナラサキ産業 * the TSE Second Section presentation), Muroran is an establishment of a business place. Therefore Muroran is a few town that vistors can unusually see a scenery of the factories in Hokkaido. Muroran Night View is popular, too. Article is here
I sat a counter seat, and read a menu. But I did not find letters of the Muroran Yakitori. I wonder if I made a mistake with different restaurant, and got impatient. So I asked a waiter, and he replied me "Grilled pork is the Muroran Yakitori". I asked him about recommendation successively. Furthermore, He said "We recommend Grilled Toro Pork and Tsukune (pork meatloaf made with egg)". I ordered those. By the way, the Muroran Yakitori is one of the 7 most famous yakitori in Japan together with Bibai Yakitori (美唄焼き鳥) in Hokkaido, Fukushima Yakitori (ふくしま焼き鳥) in Fukushima, Higashi-mastuyama Yakitori (東松山やきとり) in Saitama, Imabari Yakitori (今治焼き鳥) in Ehime, Nagato Yakitori (長門やきとり) in Yamagushi and Kuruma Yakitori (久留米やきとり) in Fukuoka.
The Muroran Yakitori is grilled pork with onions on a skewer. Customers put mustard on it, and eat it. Originally, chicken and green oinons were expensive in old days, so the pork and the onions were substituted for the chicken and the green oinons. A pair of the pork and the onions was loved by Muroran people, so The Muroran Yakitori spread out the Muroran. Secret sauce pouring the Muroran Yakitori was served at this restaurant. The salty-sweet pork juice spread in my mouth when I ate it. The Grilled Toro Pork and the Tsukune also were tasty! Finally a butter soaked into roasted rice ball (焼きおにぎり) was ordered, and it was tasty, too. Thanks for the tasty meals!
