Mt. Moiwa (藻岩山) is a mountain of 531 m altitude in Minami ward, Sapporo city, and was named after "A place to watch by always going up" in Ainu language, and is well-known for having an observation deck and a ski resort. It is relatively close to the downtown of the Sapporo, and is a popular sightseeing spot with a good night view. The night view from the Mt. Moiwa is one of the 3 best night views in Hokkaido along with the night view from Mt. Hakodate (函館山) and the night view from Mt. Tengu (天狗山), and the Sapporo has been chosen as one of the 3 best new night views in Japan together with Nagasaki (長崎) and Kobe (神戸) since 2015, so more tourists visit here. About 900,000 people come at present. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
In a winter, a part of the site turns into Moiwa Ski Resort. Moiwayama Sightseeing Road (藻岩山観光自動車道) turns into a ski course, too. The ski resort is famous for a beautiful night view, and the night view can be seen on Usagidaira Ski Course (うさぎ平コース). Unfortunately, the ski resort prohibits snowboarding.
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More
Look of Mt. Moiwa
There are 3 ways to go up the Mt. Moiwa. The first is that tourists use a ropeway to go up the mountain easily. The second is that the tourists drive cars such as an owned car to go up the mountain. The third is that the tourists go up the mountain on foot. In the case of the ropeway, it runs every 15 minutes from Moiwa Sanroku Station (もいわ山麓駅) to Moiwa Chufuku Station (もいわ中腹駅), and it takes about 5 minutes. The tourists transfer to Morris Car (もーりすカー) there, and it takes about 2 minutes from there to Moiwa Sancho Station (もいわ山頂駅). A round ticket is JPY 1,700 for adult and JPY 850 for child. In the case of the cars, the drivers can use a parking lot beside the Moiwa Chyufuku Station through the Moiwayama Sightseeing Road from mid April to late November. After that, the tourists choose getting on the Morris Car or going up through Nature Walking Trail (自然学習歩道) on foot, and it takes about 15 minutes on foot. A toll of the Moiwayama Sightseeing Road fare is JPY 660. In the case of walking, it takes about 60 minutes to go up to the mountaintop, and 5 mountain trails are built. There were surprisingly a lot of overseas walkers than I expected.
There are Moiwayama Shrine (藻岩山神社) and the parking lot aroud the Moiwa Chufuku Station. The Moiwa Chufuku Station has a ropeway station, a Morris Car station, a souvenir shop "Moimoi-no-Omise (もいもいのおみせ)", Forest Gallery, a restroom and a terrace. A view can hardly be seen because trees block people's views.
The Nature Walking Trail with about 600 m in total length is built from the Moiwa Chufuku Station to the Moiwa Sancho Station. It takes about 15 minutes on foot. I guessed the mountain trail was short, and I went up it. But a slope was very steep, and I spended time on taking a rest, so it took about 20 minutes.
There are the Moiwa Sancho Station, Moiwa Sancho Temple (藻岩山頂寺院), a radio tower, a triangulation point and a monument for Moiwayama Primeval Forest (藻岩山原生林記念碑) on the mountaintop. The Moiwa Sancho Station has an observation deck on the rooftop, a restraunt "THE JEWELS", a cafe, Star Hall, the Morris Car station, a restroom and a rest place for mountain climbers. A dinner can be eaten while seeing the night view at the restraunt. It seems to produce a romantic atmosphere. By the way, Bell of Happiness (幸せの鐘) is built on the rooftop, and couples can lock their love padlocks. The love padlocks are sold at the Star Hall.
The Sancho Observation Deck is the size that about 100 people can enter, and 360-degree panoramic view can be seen. I visited here in 7 July 2017, and a view was whitish. The view is photogenic if it is fine weather. When I visited here at the time of Doshin UHB Fireworks Festival before, the Sancho Obseravatory Deck was almost full. Everybody thinked the same way. The night view went well with the fireworks.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
