October 2nd, 2016
Ramen Jirocho (ラーメン次郎長) is a popular ramen restaurant based in Mori town located in the northern part of Hakodate city, and is run by Jirocho corp. Mr. Masashi Shimizu (清水 雅), a company president, has established it since 1998. Miso Broth Ramen has a good reputation, so a lot of customers come. The head office is in the Mori, and a ramen restaurant branch open a business in Taiwan.
My visited place is the head office along Hokkaido Road 1028, and it is relatively Mori Port. The ramen restaurant with an atmosphere such as a typical ramen restaurant is not small. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers may enjoy meals. A wall above the counter seats is covered by cards for autographs closely.
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Article is here
Spicy Miso Broth Ramen
I visited here around 16:00 on a weekday, and no customers enjoyed meals. I sat at a table seat, and ordered Spicy Miso Broth Ramen (辛味噌ラーメン), the most popular ramen. The price was JPY 780. While i was waiting for the ramen, 3 high school students entered the ramen restaurant. They looked regular customers, and ordered Jigoku 2-Chome (地獄2丁目 * Very Spicy Miso Broth Ramen) and Jigoku 3-Chome (地獄3丁目 * Extra Spicy Miso Broth Ramen). Bravo! Those sounded very very spicy.
About 10 minutes later, the ramen with a china spoon topped with spicy miso was separately served. A seared roasted pork fillet, bamboo shoots, a cloud ear mushroom, a Japanese marinated soft boiled egg, bean sprouts and green oinons were on noodles. The appearance did not look miso ramen, but creamy chicken ramen. First I had a sip of only miso soup immediately. Its taste was mild and creamy pork bone soup, and was not like common miso broth ramen. Then I added the spicy miso to the soup, and had a sip of the soup. Its taste turned into moderate spicy, and I got a little sweaty. But the spicy taste was tasty!
The noodles were chewy homemade noodles, and went well with the soup. The ingredients were large, so I was full. I got most sweaty when I finished eating up it. I was anxious about the high school students oredered the Jigoku Ramen, and supposed that they were all of a sweat trying to eating. Thanks for the tasty ramen!
