Sapporo Genghis Khan
Sapporo Genghis Khan (さっぽろジンギスカン) head office is a popular mongolian barbecue restraunt near LAWSON in Susukino, Chuo ward, Sapporo city. Mr. Takeo Kobayashi (小林武央) established the restraunt in 1986. Structure of the restraunt is a prefabricated building, and the restraunt is on the 2nd floor of Matsuda Fishing Tackle Shop (松田釣具店). I think that it is unusual to open a business at such the building in the central area of the Sapporo. The Sapporo Genghis Khan is well-known for serving tasty raw lamb, and a line is often formed before opening a business. Unfortunately, they plan to move from here to the other place in October 2019.
I visited here before opening a business on a weekday. The opening hour was 17:00. 3 visitors lined up before opening hour. The restraunt is not large, and all seats are counter seats. The interior decoration has an atmosphere such as the Showa period. It is very Shibui! Waiting seats are provided beside windows, and the restraunt is crowded with a lot of customers and smoke in a busy time, so I guess that family customers and a large number of visitors can hardly to enjoy meals in a busy time.
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Article is here
Mongolian Barbecue of Hokkaido
Genghis Khan (ジンギスカン * Mongolian barbecue) is one of the most famous local dishes of Hokkaido, and is a dish to grill sheep meats and vegetables, and is called the comfort food of Hokkaido people. Except the Hokkaido, the Genghis Khan is also a familiar local dish in a part of Iwate Prefecture or Nagano Prefecture. The reason why the Hokkaido is closely related to the mongolian barbecue is that 5 national sheep breeding ranches were built in Takikawa (滝川), Tsukisamu (月寒), Tomobe (友部) in Ibaraki Prefecture, Hojo (北条) in Ehime Prefecture and Kumamoto (熊本) after Japanese goverment declared a production increase of wool in Meiji period. In those days, Japanese had no custom of eating meat, and did not like the taste since the sheep meats had unique taste. But the Genghis Khan is one of devised dishes for using the sheep meats as well as the wool without being wasted. Indeed, the sheep meats are different from beef and pork, and have the unique taste, so it has people divided between those that like it and those that hate it. On the contrary, the unique taste may captivate the Hokkaido people's taste buds. Article is here
Their Mongolian Barbecue was Tsukisamu style without soaking in sauce. A stocky mongolian barbecue pan on a portable clay cooking stove was so good. I sat a counter seat, and a waitress asked me what I ordered drink. I ordered a glass of black beer. Because there was a cover charge of JPY 900 per a guest and 1 lamb plate and vegetables (Onion and Chinese Chive) were included, too, and customers order something to eat other than lamb. Cat rice and Korean pickles are popular. The price of a dish of the lamb was JPY 900. Fatty meat was put on the top of the mongolian barbecue pan. Customers must not move the fatty meat, and fat gradually flows out by heating, and the fat does not seem to let lambs and vegetables burn and stuck to the mongolian barbecue pan.
The lamb was grilled for about 3 minutes. It was fresh and tender, and rare lamb was good for eating. In addition, fortunately, I ate lamb with bone, too. Finally I took sauce dashed with Jasmine tea, and it was tasty! It tasted a little sour. The total sum (one beer and two lamb plates) was JPY 2300. It was very reasonable price!
