June 28th, 2014

Meto Onsen

Meto Onsen (芽登温泉) is a hot spring place in Ashoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city. Only Meto Onsen Hotel (芽登温泉ホテル) is built below Nukanan Dam (糠南ダム). Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. It is the origin of the Meto Onsen that Mr. Shigenori Ito (伊東重記) found a gushing hot spring place known by Ainu people in 1901. After that, he built a hot spring hut in 1904, and here the Meto Onsen Hotel is. Tourist attractions relatively near here are Lake Nukabira (糠平湖) and Naitai Highland Farm (ナイタイ高原牧場).

The Meto Onsen is about 35 km away from the center of the Ashoro, and visitors turn along Hokkaido Road 88 (北海道道道88号), and go straight for around 4 km on a gravel road, and around the end of the road is the Meto Onsen. The Meto Onsen is well-known for a secret onsen in the heart of the mountain, and is popular with onsen lovers and overseas tourists, too. I used a car navigation system on my smartphone, but the smartphone became out of range on the way, and I got impatient. When I thought that it was dangerous to lose my way in such heart of the mountains, and I believed a signboard along the gravel road and headed, so I arrived there properly. Meto means "The heart of the mountain" in Ainu language, as the name suggests, it is the heart of the mountains that I wondered uneasily whether the hot spring ryokan is really built. Drive carefully because bears and deers may cross the road.

Nukabira Dam and Lake Nukabira

Lake Nukabira (糠平湖) in Kamishihoro town is the second largest man-made lake in Hokkaido. There is Nukabira Hot-spring Resort (糠平温泉) on the lakeshore in the northwest side of the Lake Nukabira. There is Higashitaisetsu Nature Center (東大雪自然館) in the hot-spring resort, and tourists can gather information about Lake Nukabira. Even fishing is popular, too, and it is famous for catching spotted sea trouts in a summer and catching Japanese pond smelts in a winter. In addition, there is Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉) near the Lake Nukabira. Article is here

Naitai Highland Farm

Naitai Highland Farm (ナイタイ高原牧場) is the Japan's largest public farm in Kamishihoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city. Whole mountains of 1,700 ha with 1,000 m in height is a ranch that about 3,000 cows put out to pasture. Toursts can enter the mountain at about 800 m above sea level, and a hut is built in a neighborhood of mountaintop. A meal and a soft serve ice cream used for milk of Naitai Highland Farm cows are served at the hut, and the tourists can taste thick milk. There is a restroom, too. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Article is here

In the case of day trip bath, men use a large open-air bath, and women use a small open-air bath, and all baths use 100% natural free flowing hot springs that water temperature are suitable for bathing by a heat exchanger. The bathroom is small but cozy. The sunny bathhroom with large windows is feeling good. There are Kyogan-no-yu (巨岩の湯), the large open-air bath that men use mainly and the small open-air bath that women use mainly on the riverside of the Nukanan River. The open-air baths does not have a roof, so bathers can enjoy a sense of openness. A view is good, and the bathers can relax very much. The Kyogan-no-yu was built newly in 2015. When I visited here, there was not it. The open-air bath turns into bath only for men, bath only for women, mixed bathing bath or charted bath depending on time. The bathers must wear bathing clothes (Rental fee: JPY 300) in case of mixed bathing.

The large open-air bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 15 people can take a bath, and a cascading bath is set on the edge, too. It used to be a mixed bathing. Blindfold fences are built newly, so the bathers can not see the Nukanan River while bathing. But there is not a roof, so a sense of openness can be felt.

The hot springs are high alkaline with ph 9.1, so I felt smooth and slippery touch. The hot springs are drinkable, a plastic cup is provided. It tastes like slighly boiled egg. But the drinking hot springs have no effect unfortunately. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathroom. In addition, A free hair dryer is installed at a dressing room.
